Well they still have 2 songs unreleased from the painting with sessions, so we'll eventually get SOMETHING, even if it's just a single

Took about 2 months in between listens, Recycling has definitely grown on me. And Burglars will always be a banger

I am still enjoying this album and the playful silliness of it. Really like how Pandas and Avey vocals overlap each other. Some tunes remind me of sonic a bit. Also vibes of the work of Oorutaichi and Asmus Tietchens

Recycling reminds me a lot of Fiery Furnaces. In fact the whole idea of their vocal trade-offs strikes me as something FF would've done had they kept going.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if there was a reason beyond that. I wonder how different of an album it would have been with his input

Been getting back into this album a bit recently and it's pretty good. Maybe my least fav AC album overall but still an impressive and unique piece of work that would be the highlight of many other bands' discographies. Agree that Spilling Guts is amazing. That and Recycling are the best Panda songs. Even though Panda contributed the singing technique that the album is known for, I think Avey's songs are the strongest here.

Same got back into it but was kind of disapointed by it, maybe was not in the mood. Tho the Painters Ep was surprisingly amazing

still pretty floored by the overall production on this record... feels super airy and bright, and the synths and rhythms are pretty on point, tho i sometimes feel a little weary of the OP-1 bass sound, and something like Burglars almost feels like sliiiight synth-overkill even tho i kinda love that one. but like Goalkeeper has similar energy and is way more minimal. but its kinda cool to have a synth freak-out like Burglars in the middle of the record.
still way into this weird like fisher price and 90s board game/childrens advertisement energy that i cant really describe. its this really giddy kind of feeling, nickelodeon-ish i guess, but when i try to describe it is a reductive way of describing it. its on gnip gnop, golden girls and hocus pocus and like spilling guts...
fave panda is spilling guts, cuz that song is fucking undeniable and most to-the-point and tasty synth work imo, and favorite avey/overall is On Delay cuz of the kinda different energy it has... makes me think of a Feels era ballad except fast. so ya, still into this record/era a good bit, but i almost want more avey? on delay, burglars and gnip gnop are some of the most interesting things to come out of the era for me, and kinda Bagels, but feel like he was more about doing big anthem-y songs liek Golden Gal and Floridada which are very nice but arent as good as his more like deep-cut type tracks?
basically the avey vibe im jonesing for from his new solo stuff/the music box village set is totally absent from this record/era pretty much, but that just shows how diverse these guys' styles can be... like what i love about Homies is basically not in any of pandas tracks really, except the bass on Flight which is an obvious development on the pbvsgr/painting bass sound. the boys already moving on..
also, jimmy mack is best cover

I like the individual tracks on the painters but for some reason don't have a lot of love for it as an ep

same kinda, but i dont mind it. Goalkeeper is insane and I think coulda stood in for Burglars on the album, tho i like Burglars..
this EP + gnip/hounds is a really sick, shorter lp-length worth of songs...id personally throw in like On Delay and Bagels (or live techno Loch Raven) maybe and you have a whole alternative to the LP that I might prefer even more... Like Gnip Gnop is fucking crazy. the way they go about like arranging that song blows my mind every time i listen to it.

I made an alternate track-list with the ep and the single, I took off floridada and vertical. I think it flows better tonaly, the original album sounds too sweet, too "happy" in a sort of forced way. I also didn't bother trying to balance out the songs in terms of Avey and Panda, just what I think sounded good together. Funnily enough that ended up meaning all the Panda songs being the first half of the record and Avey being side 2. It works for me because the Panda songs I choose to lead off the record have a slightly darker vibe than everything else from this era, Hounds sort of splits the difference which is why it leads into Hocus Pocus so well. I also used Lying the Grass and Bagels as the transition from Panda to Avey because they both have the other as the lead vocal.
Peacemaker
Natural Selection
Summing The Wretch
Hounds of Bairro
Hocus Pocus
Spilling Guts
Recycling
Lying in the Grass
Bagels in Kiev
The Burglars
On Delay
Gnip Gnop
Goalkeeper
Kinda Bonkers
BONUS TRACK
Jimmy Mack

Personally not big on Gnip Gnop but otherwise I like that tracklist. Though I do like vertical
Best tracks of the era for me:
Lying in the grass
On delay
Burglars
Recycling
Goalkeeper
Overall painting with and accompanying ep/single are a pretty weird bunch of songs for animal collective.
Golden Gal is the only song I'd say I really dislike

Re-relistening again, these songs go off! In the right zone for these songs in my life I think
I'm sad Natural Selection gets hate, one of my favourites fr sure. (I add it to my list 2 posts up lol)

i like the album but i never listen to songs from the 2nd side, i think the hocketing becomes too much and a little uninspired, specially on the duo summing the wretch/spilling guts which i think is some of their weak material...

Spilling guts is dope I reckon
Summing the Wretch is really weak compositionally but I liked it more after listening while reading the lyrics

Unnecessary space between sections, instrumental runs redundant. I like the actual verses and choruses

It's basically a nursery rhyme melody in the first half, with a banging beat. Second half is a bit more interesting, but less banging. Fits the album's tone and intent very well but has no emotional depth, for me.

the beat really bangs though
and i'm a sucker for unusual/uneven phrase lengths. structurally it's got some merit, especially with the hemiola
am i misremembering that jeremy posted his notes on playing this one live? or was that another song
