I haven't listened to Painting With for months, though I listen to something AC pretty much every day. I'm a massive fan and excited for what they do next but it's just a record that doesn't resonate with me much at this point. Arguably, I should have gone to see them in Manchester back in April, when I wasn't so distanced from the album.

Of course I'm disappointed that I wasn't there for the first ever live performance of Water Curses that will only ever happen once in this incarnation of the universe, but as with Alvin Row, the current live setup doesn't do anything for me. I'm sure I'd have appreciated it more for being there, of course, but it's pretty much the only era when I haven't enjoyed listening to a single version of any song, which is enough to draw a conclusion.

Having listened to the Honolulu show, they are really tight compared to the first legs of this tour but there's only this kind of dancey energy, not much emotional colour for me. I'm not criticising, I'm being sincere about why I haven't connected with this live era.

One thing I will say is that there's a freshness and element of risk to what they're doing which is a welcome contrast to the grinding professionalism of the previous tour. They're obviously enjoying themselves.

Still jamming this. Love the energy of the record. It's like if Suicide went tropical or something. Also my favorite AC is anytime Avey & Panda sing together so PW is top tier for me.

I always considered Hounds of Bairro to be my least favorite song from this era but I'm listening to it now and it rules. Kinda wish it was mixed a little different though.
But yeah, this album as a whole is still pretty good. Probably wouldn't rank it too high relative to most of the rest of their discography, but it's still a super enjoyable and interesting listen. I can't really identify with all the people criticizing the hocketing as a repetitive gimmick, I feel like each song that features it gives it some notable variation. My biggest issue is mostly with the short song lengths, I prefer it when things have more time to develop and breathe.

Yeah lets please hope for the most psychedelic, far out and most groovy tunes for their next album ...

Seriously all that with more jams ..

Im thinking feels vibes , like organic natural sounding structures , lots of layers ...

Mixed with some improv and ambience ... oh God i can cream right now !

My dream for their next album would be a proper old school double album with the four of them throwing their own compositions and ideas in. Every anco album so far has more or less had a very distinct style and it would be cool to see an album that was a mad mix of everything, I reckon.

Somebody posted a comment on the AC subreddit recently saying that supposedly Panda wants to do another AC album before working on another solo album. I asked him where he read that but he didn't respond, has anyone else read that anywhere? That would be pretty dope

I could kinda see why Panda might feel that way too since PW followed so closely after Grim Reaper. That dude on reddit might've just been bullshitting though. Also it seems unlikely that the dudes would jump into another album cycle without a break in between. But if that could happen I would be so happy

isn't this kinda what Centipede Hz was?

I could see them doing another AC album instead of taking a break for solo stuff, in all the interviews they said they were all feeling way more energized and inspired than they were after touring CHz. And throwing Deakin back into the mix might get the ball rolling even further

I could definitely see them pressing on with AC music, provided they stop touring soon, or touring this set, because it's a relatively lightweight release, written and recorded quite quickly. It's also really similar to some recent Panda Bear stuff and so unless he's going to go in a markedly different direction with a new batch of solo songs, I'd sooner his influence were diluted somewhat and steered in another direction.

I do feel that they have reached the space that Noah and Pete steered towards with Tomboy and especially PBVSGR where they are able to create fantastic, one of a kind multiform art that also doesn't throw off their ability to create the next in the series. :) :)

Then uniquely enough, by having solved such a puzzle, different aspects of how are present within the music, able to be teaching people listening and feeling the music, in open ended ways, how to find and understand various experiences of balance!

i love the current panda sound so much, but what i rex seems to dictate the songwriting style is an influence of the machines they use live....? maybe? the octotracks rock and perhaps greaper material was written with them in mind

this is my absolute favorite album, but I just joined so scrolling through 200+ pages is going to be hard. forgive me if any of my points have been mentioned. obviously this is all just an opinion and my own interpretation.

is anyone else blown away by abby's success in the artwork for gnip gnop/hounds? it really breaks down the core of the songs into their most rudimentary form.

hounds of bairro: "hounds" have this element of badassery and seriousness to them, but abby says: no, look at my cute little robot doggos! they think they're so tuff, but they're actually little robopups gone "savage," (aka making different music)

seeing this live was so much fun. "tension grows, no big deal" and "can't fix us we're broken" had me MESSED UP. fun album art party game: guess which pup is which boi

gnip gnop: sounds like a cute 50s bop. move along, nothing to see here. but that's what we thought of the beach boys too, and brian wilson sort of had a psychotic break because the music didn't fit their real lives at all?

innocent enough right? NO. terrifying. they're talking about how stressful it is to keep bouncing their ideas back and forth. especially when, in the final product, half of them are always going to be obscured...
AM I INTERPRETING WAY TOO HARD? MAYBE. LET ME KNOW. :shh:

never noticed but floridada seems to have some sort of panda bear humming part. sounds reversed or something. sounds like panda bear going 'heeem num num heem num num' during the verse parts. can def hear it during the kcrw performance. http://www.kcrw.com/music/shows/morning ... 2016-04-06

anyone else hear it ?

Cool ! Yeah I love it . At first I thought it was just pandas parts reversed but it sounds like a totally sepetate panda humming thing. I think I kinda hear it in the studio one but just barely . I love finding new things in songs

the sounds on this album annoy me a lot but the songwriting continues to blow my freaking mind and make me SO SAD

natural selection:
"You think success belongs to the bank"

"It feels like progress
Is a product of a hidden game"

WTF this shit is enough to send you into the throes of existential depression. makes me rethink my entire life

The sounds are a big reason why I love Painting With. Feels futuristic and clean. Like some sort of electric waterfall or force field water bed. The beats also have a spacey quality with a mixture of hip hop and early electronic music (808's & Heartbreak meets Suicide). Top 3 AC album imo

i love the studio version but that april live show on bandcamp is a dream come true. recycling into daily routine into summing the wretch into natural selection is such an overdose of panda goodness! all the drawn out ending- and starting jams are top notch, as are all the panda yeahs and yelps. the only thing missing is hocus pocus :(

I like the live version I got of hocus pocus here. Starts around 11:26ish. Obviously not as good as a soundboard recording though.

Love it when Avey sings "YOU must FOCUS..."

Jeremy had a couple story instagram posts where they were in the Beach Boys Private Studio in California. They could have just been visiting/looking at it.

Best post I could find on it was Drop of Sun Studios and Atiba's IG:
