yer i think thats really one of the major forces behind all dada-esque works is the kind of spiteful intention of taking it way too far then letting the audience examine what they in some ways created

my opinion with this album is that i love all the first side, and then the last 3 songs

i just don't care very much for bagels, on delay and spiling guts....

Anyone think the stripped back drum/bass production on Doin it right might have influenced Panda's writing, particularly on HP & LITG?

It's entirely possible

I personally find Doin it Right pretty uninspiring though lol

Yeah I don't go back to it much, but all the talk of non-album tracks got me thinking bout his stylistic progressions.

Anyway, move along.... :) :)

actually liked doin it right. its so simple that it made me happy

honestly i thought RAM was a trash album, that was one of the highlights for me

anyway, this is an AC thread lol

Haha yeah it's actually the painting with thread, but
the simplicity (&synthy tones) of D'iR kinda come through on some of the choons

It's a simple, giddy thrill which sits quite nicely in an incredibly rich harmonic, textural and rhythmic masterpiece. Is RAM better than the last Boards of Canada album? Yes, it is.

No need to debate this, it's a joke, and there was a formal vote which proved this point, anyway.

I am always surprised you're a fan of RAM

OK, real talk. When it comes down to it, RAM is a very mixed album and its elitism (both about studios, scale of production and virtuoso session wankery) is something I'm not at all keen on, especially given their own amateurish beginnings (albeit totally funded by mummy and daddy, an established record producer who no doubt gave them invaluable assistance and insight - though I don't begrudge them this, it's just helped to shape their career and decision making).

Many of the tracks seem BOTH overworked AND underdeveloped. Give Life Back To Music is the perfect example, and a microcosm of the whole album. Wonderful rich QJ meets Steely Dan sound, lovely subtle harmonic shifts, superficially simple rhythms with absolutely unbelievable feel to the drumming and some really catchy melodies...and then...it just peters out a bit, no real satisfaction. All foreplay, no spunking. However, when I'm in the mood, this is perfect, the peaks are there, with Moroder, Touch and Contact, but not necessarily in each song. This is a bit of a failing, for a pop record. It really really needs some editing. Even Get Lucky sounds bloated on the album.

On the other hand, Touch, the most overblown, ambitious, ridiculous and extravagant track they've ever done is simply one of the best songs I've ever heard. For context, it's worth saying that Bugsy Malone is my favourite film of all time, and specifically the soundtrack was the soundtrack of my childhood and many of my most joyful moments. It's essentially beyond objective critique, for me, it's so interwoven with my experience of being a human being. When I heard that Paul Williams was writing on RAM, I was quite excited, baffled and feared the inevitable disappointment. And so, I couldn't believe when I listened for the first time, giggling with pure glee at that showtune style camp interlude and just hearing this song grow outwards, encompassing all of the melodic innocence and warmth of Discovery and Bugsy Malone, and the simple life affirming lyric, 'if love is the answer you're home', as I listened in bed with my wife, my best friend, who also grew up with Bugsy. Then the children's choir starts to swell in the distance and those spiralling Fantasia strings and it was dizzying, pure euphoria and happiness and I had a lump in my throat, like there was a clear line between the child and the man and for whatever we'd both been through, we are alive and in love with life.

That's it, really.

that is beautiful. I like touch but you've had a hell of an experience.

anyway, I agree with your second paragraph word for word. It's a shame I guess that you can still enjoy the album in spite of what you said but most of the time I can't get past that bloated, underdeveloped feeling.

Ha wow this has like a 2.9 on RYM. That place is pretty circle jerky these days though. It seems everybody's happy to jump on the bandwagon and trash an album for no good reason. Some of the reviews are fairly horrible but I suppose you could say that about any record on there

I kinda wish more of the painting-with related media followed the aesthetic of the floridada artwork

maybe I'm just nostalgic for the hype when that song came out

don't get me wrong, the album art is leagues better, but I liked the "tired of the waa waa? come to the everywhere place!" motif. Gave it sort of an old school feel that they didn't stick with

I'm into the portraits and glitchy post-Internet kinda aesthetic so I dig the art but I'm not a fan of the beige background.

I love the thought of putting that quote on the cover, i just think it was executed really poorly. It doesnt appeal to the eyes at all lol
What would have been cooler is if they really committed to it and made the album cover like a psychedelic postcard

I was going to go last night but I just didn't want to in the end. I hope I don't regret that one day but this tour isn't doing anything for me from the boots.

I haven't listened to Painting With for months, though I listen to something AC pretty much every day. I'm a massive fan and excited for what they do next but it's just a record that doesn't resonate with me much at this point. Arguably, I should have gone to see them in Manchester back in April, when I wasn't so distanced from the album.

Of course I'm disappointed that I wasn't there for the first ever live performance of Water Curses that will only ever happen once in this incarnation of the universe, but as with Alvin Row, the current live setup doesn't do anything for me. I'm sure I'd have appreciated it more for being there, of course, but it's pretty much the only era when I haven't enjoyed listening to a single version of any song, which is enough to draw a conclusion.

Having listened to the Honolulu show, they are really tight compared to the first legs of this tour but there's only this kind of dancey energy, not much emotional colour for me. I'm not criticising, I'm being sincere about why I haven't connected with this live era.

One thing I will say is that there's a freshness and element of risk to what they're doing which is a welcome contrast to the grinding professionalism of the previous tour. They're obviously enjoying themselves.
