Guess I don't need q-tips cause this isn't live from a concert after all. I wonder if this demo was made before he started singing different lyrics at shows. If there is a version of this song on the album I wonder what changes will be made.
A finished studio version and demo aren't the same thing, though either aren't live obviously. No one was right

If you listen to the Surfers Hymn demo from 2008 the vocals actually sound similar to Cosplay's (really distant, raw, etc.). And as Sonic said it was from before ATP which was the first time he played these songs live, before the "don't you wanna" change. I think I like the flow of "marijuana make my day" a bit more. Guess we'll see how he plays it/if he plays it in the next few weeks...
Though I might have been the closest by saying it may be sort of like a soundboard without the crowd in the room. (Obviously I didn't mean that in a demo kind of way though! I was wrong too.) On that note, WHY DID NONE OF US CONSIDER IT COULD BE A DEMO?

Awesome mixes Pete! You're the first person I've ever heard mention that Troubadour di Roi Boudin record, and it made me so happy. I came across that about 12 yrs ago in a dollar bin and it blew my mind! Have you heard their Xmas album? not as mind-blowing but still sweet. On a tangent, have you heard The Real Bahamas In Music And Sound? another one I found around the same time, that probably had an even bigger effect on me...just gorgeous! Even bigger tangent...Erik Morse was a high school buddy of my best friend in college...what did you think of his book? I found it very informative, but wondered how it looked through your eyes...again, super props for all the wonderful bones you throw us!!

Seriously! But at the same time why would we even think he would release a demo? There isn't really any precedent for this for us to even consider haha. We heard about the surfers demo from a poster after ATP 2009 and didn't get to hear it/share it until 2011, but it still wasn't from Noah.

This is true! And now that we know that it's a demo, it's exciting to know that we either have another version to look forward to or (if it isn't released) we at least got a somewhat proper version of it at all!

I'm sort of looking at this new track from a comic angle. It's funny and pretty. Nuffin' wrong with that in mah book. I'm still writing said book.

Without a question a live recording.
Like DAD said, the samples are dry and up-front, which is the result of recording the direct feed of Noah's gear. If you listen though you'll hear that there a "backend" ambience to the sounds - especially to the vocal feed - which is what happens when room mics are added to a direct signal. Doing this dampens up the mix and makes the listener get a feel for the venue's environment. But the biggest give away to me is the compression. It's sounds really unnatural and is the effect when you compress a master bus of a live recording as opposed to treating each channel individually.
If you don't believe me, go listen to officially released live songs. The Brother Sport and Summertime Clothes from LA in 2007 that was given away with MPP are a perfect example. Homebase is another.
SOURCE: Audio is my job.
yeah the homebase samples are super dry, very noticeable when only the bros main sample is playing by itself with no reverb, compressed and noticeable loop cut

I feel like we're all sort of analyzing this.
It really seems like Panda Bear just did a take of this song and then Sonic Boom mixed it. That's not to say that it's getting me really excited, but I'm not getting too upset about the production side of it because I know that it's very likely going to change.

Hi Sonic boom hope you're doing well
Thank you so much for the track list of the mixtapes, I've listened 2 of them and... WOW! I mean, now I understand why the guys of MGMT were so psyched when you DJed their dinners. I'm in love with these mixtapes and now I have some food to feed my iPod
COSPLAY ! what a great name for a song, the word cosplay has duality - 1. the real person and 2. the character or idea represented, the same goes with Panda Bears, they're black & white, so, I think the etymology of "Cosplay" fits really well with Panda Bear.
Greetings to Panda Bear

Yeah those mix tapes have been great from what i've listened to so far + observing the track list. Healthy amount of Talking Heads and Nurse With Wound! Lots of great bands.

In the context of this thread (and to some extent this board) Sonic Boom fills this kinda prophetic role (Sonic Jesus / Panda God?). Every time this thread gets bumped, the first thing i do is scan the page for his reply.

Assis 2014 – Sonic Boom mix
I just want to thank you again for posting the mixes (and for having the Panda song on there). It makes me sad to read what I bolded and I really wish people would just appreciate/analyze what's presented without having the knee jerk reaction to be so negative about things. I don't know but it really bothers me, especially when it's taken to the next level over the internet. Everyone feels the need to shit on anything they're not a fan of.
" .....and therein lies the truth.....accept it for what is , not what it isnt....." - This is a great ass quote that I feel like everyone should at least think about.
And thank you for posting the tracklists for the mixes, I'm really excited to dive into some new music

Panda/Sun Araw split remix 7"?
A. Sun Araw - Horse Steppin (Panda Bear Remix)
B. Panda Bear - The Preakness (Sun Araw Remix)
They're both horse themed... think about it

Already shilling my benjamins 4 "Steppin Horse Been to Preakness"

For whatever reason i've been listening to slow motion a lot lately, and it's definitely making me pumped about this batch of songs being so beat heavy. I'm dying to hear how they end up sounding with the full studio treatment.
Sonic, if you're still here then it would be great to get your personal opinion on how you'd describe these songs. Is this gonna Panda's bass album?

mr boom, i'm curious since the title of the title is panda bear meets the grim reaper, is the album gonna largely focus on the theme of death? because cosplay certainly doesnt fit the vibe that i picture from the album title.
