I'm actually surprised he didn't complain about the interludes.

I think you're right scaryb, lazy review

i don't think Joe Biden hates all AC-related stuff. he seems to be a pretty big fan of everything pre-Hz.

the review was trash, though. his least favorite track was lonely wanderer. he didn't even mention crosswords. he gave the EP a 6 and the album, which is a lot stronger, a 4. it's just a bad review all around, and i usually think his are quite good (or at least well-reasoned).

i'm not saying anybody really did or will, but i wouldn't go as far as to say the general positivity emanating here around this album is greatly aided by the presence of the producer, nor would i allow that to make some reasonable-sounding things the forced-charm youtube guy said about it seem more apt.

he's right that lots of things stay landlocked and blur together, but there's a lot to them and they do move, and the blur i think that's because the arrangements here are levels, rivers of styx, which gradually like personify (like he says in that interview) and become more detailed and sparse, culminating in tropic of cancer and all that.

the things he said he wanted are in selfish gene, he just wasn't listening close enough to hear them. it has a sense of introduction that lingers because the singer is just now seeing it so clear and all that. it's all pretty there.

the connections to any kind of continuity with a band-wide "supplemental" feeling are just some nostalgic problem he has, i don't think this album is anything but itself, nor should any album you review be any more than that, really.

Since a lot of peeps said they're going to the Asheville show—don't forget tickets are on sale today at 12 noon ET (about 25 minutes from now)! http://theorangepeel.net/events/panda-bear/

Nashville tix go on sale at the same time too -> http://www.exitin.com/calendar/ (the Exit/In website is dumb and won't let you directly link to the page for Panda Bear's show)

The negative reviews, all two of them, have seemed quite defensive and like conscious of the fact they're going against the grain, specifically addressing fans etc.

Opinions and all that.

being a part of this forum, being a part of the album buildup, hearing boots, interacting with sonic boom etc. gives us a predisposition to like the music. Everything that surrounds this album for us is positive.

Joe Biden and lots of other reviewers are going in almost completely cold, so they
a) have no expectations aside from hype, and
b) have no incentive to like the music if they're not a fan or haven't had a positive, interactive experience with the music like we have.

Also, weather you like it or not, those of us participating in this thread are pressured into liking the music because we have the damn producer hangin out with us, and there's the pressure to fit in with everyone. reviewers are outside of our anco world

so, idk, just have some perspective I guess

Whoops actually Nashville tickets are on sale in an hour! My bad. I forgot Nashville is in central time, so tickets actually go on sale 1pm ET not 12pm as I originally thought.

Just bought my Asheville ticket! :)

To fairly review and analyze something a critic should possess an even keeled temperament towards the things they come into contact with, and Joe Biden has always struck me as one of those people who are just way too far on the negative side of the spectrum. He see's the worst in everything, and as a result a good score from him is really rare. I tend to not take reviews from people like that too seriously.

That said Joe Biden's main gripe with Noah's music seems to be the one I hear the most, which is that it's too repetitive and not dynamic enough to stay engaging. Funnily enough it's this loopy/mantra like quality that a lot of people seem to love about Panda Bear's music in the first place so, as usual, it seems to be nothing more than a matter of taste.

Personally I would have liked slightly more variation on certain tracks (which is why I was bummed at losing some of the extended intros and "beat drops"), but why people get totally hung up on such a minor preference is beyond me.

I feel this too, which I tried to hint at with my bias comment. yeah he has a lot of good points. but he has some kind of preconceived notions about the collective's solo material that don't really lend him the most open mind for this album.

and yes a lot of the things Joe Biden describes as bothersome (repetition, loopy, panda vocals in general) are things I look forward to. he describes butcher baker as repetitive but I find come to your senses more annoying and butcher baker more relaxing and crunchy, comforting in a chewing ice kind of way.

it's an emotionally charged album and I think the sounds reflect that even if the emotions are not all positive.

Allmusic review: 4.5/5

Pretty high score for them. They wrote "Latin Boys" instead of "Boys Latin" in the review and named Shadow of Colossus a highlight though.

REVIEWS? I will always be biased about anything these bros kick out. 2007 being my founding year, I will not be turning my back. I had been waiting for this since June, 2013. Pure excellence. Once finally having the official product delivered there were no words. Completion. What a ride it was. Now what's next?

I like allmusic

they don't really give many bad scores
and when they do they still say good things about the album

and the number scores really don't matter that much

all that from my experience anyway
