The feeling of I Know I Don't Know is so deeply romantic and passionate, like being on a windy shore at night with your lover, each other's exposed skin dark and crimson, only partially illuminated by a wavering bonfire, locking eyes while the waves crash behind you. I've gotten the a similar feeing from early boots of songs like Surfers Hymn, Jetty, Selfish Gene, Flight, but this is the first time I've felt like it really carried over successfully to the studio incarnation.

I think the delay is a little obnoxious on some of the songs. I absolutely adore this album tho so far

I didn't listen to the boots this time round, so I heard the songs for the first time on the album.
I went back and listened to the live Buoys afterwards to compare. (~5:22 in the vid).

It's a shame that he still insists on neutering the songs in the studio. It just seems to have so much more punch in the live version, with those noisy moments.
Aside from that only 2 listens to so far and the album's growing on me. Happy to have another pbear album in the mix.

good golly Token is stand-out. didn't know it from boots (what was its first name?) but that instrumental break? the timbres in it are perfection in general.
like which one is 'Sabbath'? I knew like 2/3rd from boots but certainly not all... (and all of the boot songs made it right?)
I do not want to use this word cuz sometimes I wanna reject this concept but just the mildest of demoitis on Buoys title track I suppose, but I think will quickly subside. I want the guitars and like synth during the chorus to be more pronounced/louder, and maybe a touch less vocal delay on verses, but its only cuz that song live was a revelation to me and I pounded a recording of it a lot sometimes.
But good fucking lord, Token --> IKIDK ---> Master ----> Buoys is a jaw-dropping sequence. stunning shit man
edit: man norm buoys is perfect, its all perfect, fuck comparing to boots, thats yr own problem if u do it sorry, can't believe a song like buoys or mOST of this album exists, didn't think wed ever get this loudly-mixed vocals and guitar strumming sound from panda, its amazing

Hopefully, Panda could use this as leverage to let him/AC release music on their own time frame from now on. If he was frustrated before about having to wait until 2019 to release, I hope he ripped into Domino for fucking it up (even though it's only their fault indirectly).

I've listened to this enough times by now that I feel compelled to give my thoughts:
This feels like a totally new direction for Noah, it feels like a revelation. I think something was mentioned earlier in the thread that his last few releases felt like tying up old ideas, but this feels like something new and unexpected.
I was initially turned off by the use of autotune (I've never imagined AC making use of it as an effect, and Avey even popped in on CA before Down There came out, I believe unhappy at the suggestion of autotune possibly being used in their music), but it really adds to this plastic-y, almost vaporwave, vibe that panda is going for on the album. It's a brilliant juxtaposition how he took these acoustic songs and loaded them up with modern digital effects, production techniques, and rhythms - the sort of stuff your usual acoustic songwriter won't touch with a 10-foot pole.
It's very much a headphones album. I haven't given it a spin in my car yet, but it felt like a dynamic was lost over speakers. I think it's the way everything is mixed that adds this extra layer you can only really get by listening on headphones (similar to Mouth Wooed Her, but maybe not to the same extent). The only thing bothering me about the mix is how loud the vocals get in certain songs, where they either end up drowning out the backing music, or at least make it sound tiny and thin by comparison. That said, it's exciting to hear Noah sing so confidently and let is voice remain bare (despite all the effects) instead of the usual multi-tracking we're used to.
I was initially disappointed when I saw the album length (~31 mins), but every song is packed full of awesome little moments and progresses with a fairly quick pace that I think I'd be exhausted by the end if the album were 10-20 mins longer. Short-but-sweet was a good choice, IMO.
Anyways, sorry for the ramble but I felt I needed to write these thoughts down somewhere rather than bug my friends with excited texts when they haven't been able to listen yet lol.
I might do a track-by-track review a little later, but yeah it just feels good to be listening to a new Panda Bear album in 2018 and it's this surprising yet so good at the same time!

imo I think it's better on speakers rather than headphones, mostly just cuz of the massive sub bass which needs to shake your body to get the full effect. But I guess it also requires good speakers with enough bass, so it might not work on shitty ones

srsly
buoys is my only complaint about the album. that live version from the French show kills and the studio version feels like a demo in comparison. i wish he'd've done the "oooo"s in the chorus at the same spots he does them live. and the delay on his vox obscure the instrumental too much.
anyway i love everything else. IKIDK is my easy fav. the "take it off, writ in the sky" part until the end is my favorite stretch on any panda song (maybe next to the 2nd half of alsatian darn). that whistled melody and "home free" give me western movie vibes

Been listening to almost nothing but this album since it freebirded, feel p confident now in saying that it's my 2nd fav Panda solo album next to Person Pitch. Home Free has really been clicking with me lately and honestly feels perfect as a closer. Love how the melody and chord progression has this sort of circular looping quality to it if that makes sense, that coupled with the lyrics gives this feeling of infinity.

Seriously hate to split hairs, but is this a formant thing? Like is it actually autotune?

I think it's both. The lead vocals are autotuned like in the normal sense, plus there are background vocals that are format shifted
