I thought the same thing. Maybe he's having tech problems. He has said multiple times that his new gear has been giving him issues live.

edit: i like how the drums started Mr Noah.

I thought the set break was to give him a chance to play older material.

and fuck the sound guy. seriously. I don't know why noah thanked him.

i havent noticed the sound issues. maybe its the sound of the stream cutting in and out? feedback happens live sometimes.

This is probably the last song... my guess is the whole show was purposely shortened because tech issues, which is why some of the transitions were unusual

The issue isn't that it's cutting in and out, it's that feedback has been a big problem throughout the set. A Panda Bear set should not be tricky for a decent live engineer to mix. The prevalence of feedback in this set is inexcusable, and is likely the reason PB is seeming so unenthused. He's pretty out of character.

Pretty much. There were a lot of problems with feedback, with the engineer finguring it out in the last 2 or 3 songs. Totally amateur engineering. I feel bad for PB. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't keep the video up after the performance, and I also wouldn't be surprised if he or the AC don't do a live stream again any time soon...

looks like panda mixes it all live himself and all the sound guy probably gets is a stereo output from his mixer which is DA'd into the house system. which would explain why the vocals were a little quiet. in ear monitors like that are typically sealed and make all the vocal sounds in your head seem louder than they actually are. in his head it probably sounded like the right level but to us it was a bit quiet.

i feel for the sound guy because doing a show like this can actually be tricky since the artist has so much control over the mix and you have so little. i wouldn't come down on him so hard.

just wish they hadn't specifically mentioned he was gonna play Person Pitch songs. Obviously they didn't know what they were fucking talking about. He played a slightly shorter version of his normal set.

there is something about the quiet and dry vox that has given me a new perspective on the songs : ) it feels a bit like the stark and real cosmic human mixing with all of the sounds created in the studio, and, along with the two big strobes facing forward it has made it feel different mentally and emotionally; the feeling of keeping up with all of the recorded sounds with just yourself ~ himself, it is heavy in a good way! :0 :o :D

caught the last couple of tunes. Sounded really good before encore, after encore seems like he lost it a little bit. :downsrim: Something was up with the mix. Delay is sometimes hard to manage in alive setting so I'm guessing that was the problem. Whenever he tried to get some in tha mix, feedback would slide right in. I don't think thats a new delay (referring to the guy who posted above). He's been using that to manipulate his voice on many live recordings I've heard. Was really cool to see the gear up close. I wonder what the master mix board is and what he is sending in and out of it.

Maybe the feedback was from the acoustics? Was that room designed for concerts?

My gripe isn't with the volume of the vocals. Him and the AC usually keep it lower in the mix.

Noah likely gives the audio guys a feed from his board where he mixes individual tracks and sounds, and another feed for his mic (after going through his effects chain). There's no way in hell PB mixes his live sound to how it sounds in his headphones. the AC are wise to how sound occupies a room, and would never place the trust of their mix in in-ear monitors.

There was a sound engineer who couldn't figure out how to keep his vox at an acceptable level, while keeping feedback at bay.

its all speculation i guess, i've just been in that position where the artist has control over parts of the mix that i typically would, and it's hard to anticipate what they are going to do and how to react in your own mix to keep bad things from happening. just trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. it was still a killer performance.

I loved everything before the encore, feedback or no.

The encore was definitely problematic mixing-wise. I've seen him live three times and it's always sounded like heaven.

No complaints. This was a treat-uh and should net him some great exposure.

That was my first thought, but the venue was designed for audio events. That, and the house engineer has definitely worked shows there before. They'd never put a new guy on the board for a show like PB.

There are a lot of ways to control feedback even in a difficult or complex set up, of which PB's is not. The easiest way to get rid of it without effecting gain is to lower the mid range frequency, the frequency that a large majority of the human voice occupies.

I mean, usually reverb can be a problem when it comes to feedback, but Noah's vocal chain was completely dry except for one or two things in selfish gene.

So it wasn't the acoustics, it wasn't the amount of reverb... Maybe Sonic can weigh in on what he thinks.

What was your point about delay? I heard only one or two very subtle instances of delay in selfish gene and that was it. Delay also doens't have an effect on feedback. Reverb, however, does... but there was no reverb either. The vocal chain was essentially dry. Which is even more or a reason why there shouldn't have been feedback.

Maybe during his soundcheck he couldn't control the feedback with his normal reverb and effects chai, so he ditched it in an effort to squash the feedback. It's possible the feedback was even worse, and the show feedback was a huge improvement. I'd love to find out what happened, though it's unlikely we will.

I also really liked the show other than the feedback... I was hoping for some Person Pitch material because it was advertised as having 'classics from across his catalog'. Apparently 90 minutes, and classics from across his catalog means 60 minutes and some Tomboy songs + new Preakness.

Anyway, other than those complaints (feedback and false advertising) it was really good. Liked the way he did all of the new songs and the new take on the Apocalypse Now sample. Glad I got to see him live in Toronto and it's really cool that this was made available via streaming.
