this seems like the most Spirit-y thing he's done since spirit... DT and Slasher don't have much in common with Spirit but i get a lot of the same energy here in a way... just different tho. lyrically effective to me in the same way. and same creepy sound design as spirit/hcti and oddsac type stuff while also having the expressive moods of st/feels... but theres this totally new element with this kind of unique instrumentation and some of the weird traditional influences like bluesy/jazzy or is that strait up dark bluegrass on ms secret.

also feels like the heaviest ac related thing in so long and its partly because of how clear all the sonics AND vocal mixing is. like nothing is shrouded at all here nearly, save for drones like looo1 and dr aw one for j... like love vocals on slasher but because of the effects/mixing u can so often not make out the lyrics... everythings so upfront here that is unique for them... its like a more muscular dark sung tongs

kind of reductive to compare it to their older stuff tho honestly.. thats just the main vocabulary i have built up for talking about ac.... just didnt expect this direction at all but it also feels temporally displaced in a weird way since he himself seems to already be playing new songs. glad this album exists, sounds like he almost didnt release it. thats kind of crazy

Tripped on some real nice shrooms yesterday. Listened to Coral Lords. That is seriously the most relaxed I have been in a LONG time. So good. This album is definitely meant to be listened to under the influence. It makes it.

Knowing Coral Lords is about Avey almost drowning makes the lyrics a lot more meaningful to me.. I feel like he has written this kind of "ocean preservation soul jams" type of song before, but it's never hit me like this, and he's never had a line as impactful as "getting pulled down can enlighten you".

Honestly the lyrics to this album are fucking killer, im just super impressed with how he was able to go super out of just comfort zone and do something fresh and direct, while still retaining that Avey-ness.

It’s mostly about the ocean and how powerful it is. A little of it is about a rough experience I had in the ocean that left me very humbled. It made me realize how much bigger it is than I am in the grand scheme of things. It’s also a sad song, because the ocean is very much in danger right now at this time in history. I think it’s really important that people are aware of that and do something about it.

lol so I may have not remembered that correctly. Rough experience to almost drown is a big leap lmao. But that line still makes a ton of sense

The more I let this record soak in the more I love it. Favorite songs from Avey since Oddsac for me. This release and meeting of the waters are giving me flashbacks to 2007 where there was seemingly endless amounts of great material coming out of the guys

Not that it matters too much, but any ideas on why pitchfork hasn't reviewed it?

scheduling i'd guess. probably will be a top placement review, but not as big a release as the new tyler, the creator (or the new lana, which also hasn't been reviewed yet). maybe it'll get 2nd placement behind lana or something, but i figure it'll get a top review this week.

The new Foster the People "album" was much more pressing.

Anybody else surprised by the official lyrics of when you left me being "80" rather than "AD" (i.e. angel deradoorian)?

im guessing AD is what he meant but didn't want to be too discreet in the lyric booklet

honestly, all this time ive been hearing "avey" but i knew that couldnt possibly be it. i was even more confused when the lyrics came out but your post solved a lot of mysteries for me, thanks

I started thinking 80 meant him imagining being 80 and looking back and being content with everything he's done. "Give me wisdom of your many years," "You're the furthest thing from anything I've done (meaning he's almost 40 but 80 is still over twice his age)," "Even though I'm distances away," etc. Although I didn't think of AD, that makes sense too... Hmm...

I also originally thought he was saying Avey, like saying he admires the persona of avey or something like that.

Oh, I thought he was saying avey, but he's almost definitely discreetly saying AD

yes, the looking back from the age of 80 interpretation was exactly my thinking. I think it's a really powerful song. I love the preceding line "any world can die/any world can change" It's like a reminder that all the relationships and routines and phases that form the rich arcs of our life can inevitably change at any time, and that there's hopefully a healthy evolution that follows it. Sort of a similar message to what Noah was trying to convey with the Grim Reaper concept. When your 80, chances are all of those arcs will have met a conclusion and you want to hope that they've concluded in a way that enriched your life. Like a lot of AC's best stuff it's a really simple but touching sentiment, and the song gives me chills.

thought it was a shit review.

i hate the whole pitchfork thing of constantly talking about the bands other work and related projects and cultural and contextual moment. mind you, this can be fine. pitchfork never does it well and it comes off as a douchey we know more than you about culture sortve thing.
they rub me the wrong way, the kids who listened to Can and like rap one notch less in popularity to top 40 and maybe have read a walter benjamin essay, but will, whether having read him or not, quote him.
they didn't give a reason besides the slight inorganic sound issue they seemed to have to give it a 7.6

Do we expect Avey to play songs from the album on the upcoming tour, or will it be a continuation of the shows with Abby earlier this year?

he said in the ama that he's thinking it'll be a mix of eucalyptus songs and new songs.

exact quote was: "Im thinking my tour will be a mix of eucalyptus songs and newer songs I've been working on. I hope to have a large bag of tunes i can switch around from night to night but we will see."

Considering the difference in sound between Euca and Mothlight, these sets will get bananas.
