Huh... virginia tech is amazing or what... hahaha. Huh. Sounds like an AC track (might be the dumbest thing i've typed yet). Breakdown is just fantastic and sounds so full. Gonna listen a lot. Also has this type of frenetic energy you don't see much with Panda's stuff. Last night I heard it was like... Sunset. And thats my favorite song by him... ever.

hey, has anybody seen a full version of what the art on the back of the lp will look like? the little snippets that show up on most of the images make it look like a dutch-inspired still life. seems like a cool pairing with the portrait on the front. it makes the cover art pop more for me emotionally, knowing that it's created within a specific artistic tradition.

I could be wrong but I think the back or the LP is just a mirrored version of the front artwork, and that still life you're talking about is on the inside sleeve. I agree with you though those other paintings help put the main art in context

Have been bumping Defense so much -- what a perfectly calibrated tune. Panda has always been a master of pop but that is a song constructed as tightly as possible. Obviously Cindy Lee turns in a great guitar performance but Deakin on keys is the star for me. Such a bright touch. Sounds like water (sorry if that's incredibly pat to describe anything AC related).

I was lucky enough to snag the single at my local shop, Rattleback Records, today. Virginia Tech is such a bouncy little jaunt. Really just sounds like they're having fun up there (non-derogatory). Reminds me of multiple Tim Darcy projects (Tall Glass of Water, Cola generally). The guitar tone is delicious but definitely a departure from the Madrid/Defense sound so I understand the cut. Makes me thirst for more of this Panda in the future. Realllllly hope they play it on the tour.

i co-sign this 100%

having heard "Virginia Tech" now... whew, what a tune, and good call, hearing this one live would be transcendent

this is a classic 7" with the great interplay of dynamics between the two songs... shows off a few different sides of the new Panda Bear vibe

"Defense" feels so much about the vocals/lyrics and emotion. i was thinking how strong this song would be even as an a capella.... the music is just the icing on the cake.

VTech is cool, overall not feeling it as much as Defense cause it feels a little less developed as a song, but the harmonies and production are so on point that it makes me so stoked for SG. The idea of Ends Meet and Religious Bop sounding like this has me drooling.

i like defense not crazy on it but echoing others thoughts here about the production being absolutely immaculate... however, just listened to virginia tech for the first time and it is fucking great. It sort of feels like a continuation of isn't it now in that it sounds like if a 60s psych band were to make a track now it feels like the sort of thing they would come up with, almost like the kinks or something, which is not something i ever thought i would say for an AC related project. really excited to hear this album. it's interesting to hear AC in a more conventional music framework recently, they have always been kind of an 'other' to me in that they really haven't sounded like a lot else previously, but recently the influences have maybe been more on the sleeve and i am loving it

between these two songs I'm starting to see what is meant by multiple vibes. like defense feels like a grown up buoys song in some ways, where vt has this big driving quality like something off tomboy.

Managed to grab the last copy from Amoeba yesterday. Felt great. Been banging Defense in the car and it feels cathartic. Definitely my favorite of his seafaring, straightforward closing tracks since Benfica (I maintain PBVSGR should’ve ended with Selfish Gene).

This is gonna be a weird comparison but Virginia Tech feels like the musical equivalent of Trifle. Super British, super 60's and super tasty. I love it. Currently living for that noisy breakdown on the back half. Sinister Grift! Gonna be a good rekkid folks, you heard it here first.

Been a while! Had to cool off after the years of Skiffs/IIN-era hype.

Been listening to SG for a couple weeks now, so here to share some thoughts. Spoiler alert(s).

S of E is Elegy, Religious Bop is Just as Well. JAW is possibly my favourite track (along with Left in the Cold) - bombastic and upbeat, start to finish.

The whole record (apart from Left in the Cold and Elegy) is very jaunty and, dare I say, jolly as hell. Unashamedly summery. Production very much matches Defense in that there's not a lot of weird sounds or anything - playing it straight for the most part. Really crisp and clear. Josh did a superb job.

Ends Meet has a real Strung with Everything feel to it. Similar rhythm, similar vocal harmonies, similar tropical-adjacent bounciness.

No real trace of the bendy guitar, I'm afraid to say. Maybe some on Elegy? Some squiggly guitar solos like on Defense showing up elsewhere on the album though.

Left in the Cold is less finger picky than the Madrid version and mildly rhythmic (3/4 time signature). Super hypnotic and spacious. Elegy has a similar feel, although it's definitely the most faithful to the Madrid version. It's an interesting choice to have those two songs back to back when the rest of the record is so classic rock but they're both seriously beautiful and enchanting.

Vocal harmonies throughout the album are stellar. Very 60's pop in a way, kind of along the same lines as some of the Reset stuff.

Not sure where Dave or Brian show up but I think I hear some Josh vocals here and there (could be wrong). There's definitely a female singer on one or two of the tracks, including some spoken word on Anywhere but Here (in Portuguese I'm guessing?).

Also foxtrot well done/thank you for sharing. It's natural to feel all that stuff and it's hard to not like something from an artist whose output you've always liked. I think when you hear the full album Defense makes more sense and even if you don't like it there will be songs you're into.

Gonna disappear for a bit again now.

I was expecting this kind of... but getting confirmation is a bit of a bummer. Noah's voice + the bendy acoustasonic is such a perfect combination imo, felt so complimentary to his songwriting and a logical continuation of the Buoys sound. I'm still very optimistic though! The silver lining now is that I'm super intrigued as to what he has up his sleeve instead. Thanks for the scoop homie!

I think it was a cool vessel for a solo show, and to tie the older songs together with the new stuff, but I assume it came before the decision to go full band-style. Honestly I don't think it would've made as much sense in this fleshed out context.

Reminds me a bit of what happened with the 2019 Avey autotune. Sounded cool with how those songs were at the time but might've been a bit out of place with how they turned out on tape.

lol I still miss the autotune on some of those songs!

Thanks for dropping by TTG! If you're still around, I'd be curious to know where this ranks for you among other PB solo albums.

I'd say you're probably spot on. Just relistened to the Madrid practice, the songs are still incredible regardless of whatever guitar he's using. Forgot how gorgeous S of E is, stoked that has made it.

I know that the Domino-bashing is a tired conversation but I really cannot understand for the life of me that it's somehow more lucrative to sit on music in the way that Domino seems to do than it would be to just more-or-less release music as the musician finishes it.

The early aughts were a different time but the fact that AC could just release new music every six months to a year is just mind-boggling compared to today, where projects like TS/IIN and SG take years to see the light of day.
