not to be a hater but this is one of those songs that begs the question, did you even try not sounding like animal collective? i mean musically that sentiment speaks for itself, but even the title and what i am assuming is a bear of the panda variety on the cover. I started listening to it and i was like "yea ok this is definitely just someone who wanted to do their own take on ac" and then i skipped ahead a bit and he's literally just doing an avey impression.

honestly I don't mind other artists directly ripping off AC as long as they do it well, and this song is actually pretty good. just want more music that sounds like AC in my life

Hoping y'all can help me: I've been tryin to remember a band that released an album sometime around 2011- 2013 that felt very MPP-influenced. Reviews at the time noted the heavy influence/similarity. I can't for the life of me remember the band or album title, which suggests they may not have done much since. All I can remember is that the album cover had a vaguely floral theme - like maybe a painting of a bouquet or something like that? I remember enjoying the album and would like to give it another listen. Someone on here must know what I'm referring to...please help!
Thx in advance <3

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately not either of those - altho I love Delorean and was obsessed with El Guincho when he released Alegranza. The parallels between that album and Person Pitch (and Strawberry Jam - swear I can hear a Fireworks sample in one of the songs) are uncanny.
Keep the suggestions coming!

Neither of those - thanks again for trying to help me out. Think I am going to resort to scrolling through all Pitchfork reviews from 2011 - 2013. Will report back if/when I find it...

YES! Dallou for the win - thank you!! I was about to conclude that I was imagining the whole thing. I scrolled thru years of Pitchfork reviews and even opened up my ancient macbook to browse my pre-streaming iTunes library to look for it to no avail. This song is indeed a banger. Thanks again, my brain can rest easy now.

Early Drain Gang and early Black Kray sound like animal collective sometimes to me.
I Will Make You Bleed has always reminded me a lot of Person Pitch. Sometimes I wonder if PP had any sort of direct influence on Kray considering the way he uses samples and whatnot.

Y'all ever fuck with Prussia? They were kind of a big deal on a local level in lower Michigan years and years ago. They never really broke out of the Detroit scene but they did make a couple great albums, and they were constantly drawing AnCo comparisons. They kind of sound like AnCo mixed with doowop or something.
This song rocks.
This one too omg.
Eventually they broke up and two of them formed the now-defunct group Jamaican Queens, which was similar but more abrasive, electronic, and pop.
To go a bit further, one of the main creative minds behind both these groups was part of another project out of Illinois, a more focused and straightforward country band called Ohtis, which still had whiffs of AnCo. Also made some great stuff.
Damn I love music.

You'll enjoy! They were a lot closer to that 2000s indie sound than JQ. You can tell it was the era of Grizzly Bear et al. I wish Ryan (the singer of both bands) would do more stuff, his lyrics are unique.

One could start a whole new thread of bands influenced by Animal Collective!
Three songs, one Skiffs-like from Caravan. There are even more Skiffs/IIN-like songs on this album, but this one has a dragon slayer, syncopated chord movement, and a gnarly set of keyboard/synth solos. There are Time Skiffs everywhere for those with ears to hear:

then also this piece of French psych pop i may have posted before I dunno it's cool. sounds like the exact same filter echo thing you'll find on 2004ish material:

and then the obvious Grateful Dead reference, haven't listened to this in a while and it's a well-known influence but a remarkably obvious precursor to Hollinndagain.

I was bored at work so I made this rym guide to albums by lesser known contemporary bands that sound a lot like AC but are still good, and which specific album they sound like:
https://rateyourmusic.com/list/poachedg ... ollective/
lmk if you have thoughts or have any other suggestions, some albums are underrepresented
and yes Burning Ship Fractal is already on here and I like it lol

I went to college with one of the blokes from English Teacher and he was a prick. So that's my thoughts on English Teacher.

Ooo yessss I loved that I hadn't heard that before.
Reminds me of Meredith Monk. Some of her stuff really scratches the same itch AC does for me.

Just stumbled across this guy on Bandcamp. Acoustic instrumental fingerpicking/ambient stuff. These two tracks give me jammy Sung Tongs/Visiting Friends vibes...

When I lived in northern Finland, in the Sami region, I found this artist, Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, whose joiks remind me of AC's "Pride and Fight" type of jams.

First thought hearing this track. The flangey vocals, the sparkly sounds. Come on.
