That being said, i agree that echo chambers are boring. i think its awesome to see people on here drop hot takes. It's totally cool if you respectfully express that you don't like an anco song, no matter who made it.

we shouldn't call deakin's songs "un-anco" but we shouldn't put him on a pedestal either just because he's newer to contributing songs cause that's also not fair.

For the first like two years of me smoking weed almost every time i got high i would be convinced i shat myself we'd literally be in the woods and i'd be like "brb i gotta make sure i didn't shit myself". fortunately it never happened but it was quite scary.

though i havent laid loaf in awhile i stand in solidarity with the loaf layers as someone who has pretty bad urinary incontinence and was literally pissing my pants a little bit every time i made any sort of movement for like two months straight

I've been obsessively following this band since 2008ish and I think Deakin's contributions are pretty weak and that he's pretty far behind avey + panda singing and songwriting wise.

I find this pretty dismissive. First of all, there's so much stuff going on in their mixes that we will never know exactly who contributed what. and as far as stuff we do know is him, the purple bottle would not be the same without his guitar part. i think i already said this on here but he fucking owns magicians, the harmonies in the magnolia part and the vaudeville piano are some of the best parts of that song. hell even the little clips of him talking on mouth wooed her and bleed (pretty sure that's him, it's pitched down so i had to have read that somewhere). can we please just change the subjecting this is actually pissing me off . this thread is for speculating what the next album might sound like not shitting on the guy who has been very open about feeling insecure about his work and who in recent years has gained a lot more confidence within the band. if you really don't like him then maybe give him some more time before you say that? dude has written three songs for a band with like a million other songs. thats not fair at all.

Have also been a fan since 2008. I'm personally not as big of a fan of his songwriting compared to Dave and Noah (which is hardly a criticism I think, Dave and Noah are both miracle level geniuses and we should all count ourselves lucky that we can bear witness to their creative output). But I do think that Deak is pretty amazing as a member of AC, and more often than not his contributions elevate the songs to whole new levels.

gonna throw it out there that i think this conversation illuminates a big part of why i think artists should refrain from establishing a direct and regular presence in their online fan communities as a rule (speaking as a veteran of the fleet foxes fan discord teeheehee)

also re: ihtd's unspoken rule, i think "we all secretly agree with his insecurities" is too far too fast given that his insecurities are roughly "i'm a bad singer and a bad songwriter and i shouldn't be in AC" and i don't agree with any of those things. i agree that there is something distinctly singer-songwritery about his material that does theoretically violate the AC philosophy of pre-verbal emotional expression devoid of ego, but then i'd say that that core engine has been running at reduced power for a while now and i'm perfectly happy to let a more human approach share the table with the animal one at this point (have said it before but i do think that royal and stride deserved to be lauded as highlights of their respective albums). agree with the rest of your point though, pretty dead-on read of the hivemind

also i know i made a thing about nuance not being a prerequisite for sharing thoughts here, but i very much do want this board to be a place for long nuanced musings on AC's music, and imo u should share more of your notes app on here because your posts generally slap and make me excited about my favorite music

I think the direction of the next album should be that they do like wu tang did and make one copy and sell it to one guy, who happens to be cartoonishly evil, so we can have something more interesting to talk about than whether or not its okay to shit on deakin or if saying deakin's songwriting is worse than dave/noah is shitting on deakin in the first place.

i know the album came out over a month ago and our collective loads are shot but smh let's talk about something useful without getting upset lol

Had a moment yesterday where I thought to myself TS and IIN are as close to AC steely dan records as we'll get. End of the Donald Fagen era.

I have a hard time imagining the next era will be as traditional band-y. Definitely feel like theyll change it up again. I kind of fear the chance that they slow down a bit after all these years and hang onto a similar set up for another cycle. Also hoping for something a little stranger and darker, like an edgier, more techno leaning PW instrumentation.
