I'm happy to admit i have blinders for ChZ because it was the first release of theirs I followed as a fan, I was at P4K 2011, had just moved to cali summer 2012, made it a big ritual event to like have a joint (which, during the first few months i lived there still thought that was hard to come by lol) and to take the joint and the album on a little stroll in my campus neighborhood (inner richmond for any sf ac heads) and it was a magical experience.

got to see them a bunch of times in cali that fall and spring 2013
and that was when, for whatever reason, I thought those guys were mythical unattainable gods who some measly dipshit from central ohio would never get to breathe the same oxygen as them. played the album first every day during my shift at the cafe i worked at and the weirdness just so uniquely appealed to me.

i don't take it personally when people aren't into this record, but i do take it personally that stan's posts have been so funny and i have bronchitis so each time i laugh it fucking hurts.

anyway, i guess i just want to say that today's supernatural and wide eyed are like straight up very pretty songs.

were you at the Wiltern show in 2013? I was at that show and it was incredible. I was listened to so much CHz back then too. I haven't thrown it on in a while but ITS TIME

edit: i love honeycomb!! i haven't heard the other side (Crismson?) in a long time

you bet your ass i was! best show of the tour soundwise, but treasure island music fest took the cake on vibes

Legit!! That was my first time seeing them and it was such a good set. Peacebone and the Purple Bottle got me super psyched. Do you remember when that drunk bro jumped on stage and started like side hugging the band (Geo?)

pretty true but I hope this helps people see the chz songs as liquid (as all ac songs are, adaptable and interpretable) rather than set in stone with the chz sound palate - which I think is what most people find offputting.

weirdly though when pulleys appreared in the 2019 setlists it sounded virtually unchanged
edit: "virtually unchanged" is a bit unfair listening back, it's quite a cool version of pulleys. but certainly less distinct than the applesauce and wide eyed reworks. man the 2019 shows were cool.

Late to this party so excuse the dredging up of thinks talked about weeks ago.

Firstly, agreed on the vast chasm between the (perceived) good songs and bad. I think Applesauce, NTB, MM and Amanita are solid. I also think Honeycomb, Crimson and especially Gotham would be three of the top five jams if they were included on the main record. Overall I think this thing has been judged pretty fairly - it's a bit of a mess, it's super uneven, the production in places is whack as fuck but there are some stellar song-songs at the heart of it and it was all critiqued harsher than it would've been had it come after SJ.

Secondly on Monkey Riches, it's a baffling song to me and could be one of their best but I don't know how. Maybe a different structure? Maybe less repetition? Maybe a closer resemblance to the 2011 version? Who knows. What I do know is that I've never not been infatuated with the main loop, partly because I have no idea what it is or how it was made and that fascinates me.

Thirdly, didn't know Summing was divisive. I thought it's just trash and it was very confusing that it's the most played song of the PW era (I think).

Finally, on 3 punches, I fully agree on NTB>MR>MM. May not be anywhere near my favourite three songs of theirs or even necessarily my favourites of the album but god damn it just works. Also, BBB>B>BB surely the strongest of their discography for me and an insane centrepiece to Feels. ALSO, the opening trio of MPP (even though, again, not my favourites on the album by any means). ALSO ALSO Winters>Kids>Sweet Road. ALSO ALSO ASLO ALSO the first three of Water Curses, and going a step further maybe just all four could be the best unbroken run of AC songs ever?

I personally think they're better at one-two punches. Giant>Alvin. Cuckoo>Derek. FRG>FWX. Bees>Banshee. Winters>Kids. Working>Tantrum. Hell even GG>Recycling... I could go on and on and oh look I already have.

123 is a much trickier one imo but I'd really struggle to think of a better 1234

Solo output I could fuck with opening three of Down There, Mr Noah or PP. Opening six of Tomboy is stupid good for me too tbh.

Yeah WC was one I was contemplating but it's so tough for me to split it. I do think it's their best album in terms of concision, 4 widely different songs absolutely proving that an album can be more than the sum of its parts. Cobwebs into Seal Eyeing is my favorite 'transition', too bad it's only really seamless on vinyl...

i've always loved a lot of songs on centipede hz but it's taken till now to realize how great this album is and connect with it as one whole unit. i think due to coming off of the hype of mpp, demoitis, etc. i just needed to set it down for a couple years. listened to it yesterday and all these great songs came flooding back. had always thought moonjock and applesauce were top tier ac, but a lot of the others are just now reaching another level for me after i've finally forgotten the boots. mercury, supernatural, rosie oh, father time, new town burnout? damn dude. probably not a coincidence that my 2 fav tracks were ones that werent from the pre-release tour. 'can't wait for time to unfold me' what a great line that is from father time

also anyone remember the band's working titles for this? working titles always make me feel nostalgic. band used to call supernatural "shaker" and mercury was "hasdah." honeycomb being called 'frights' was a good fan title as well. not hz but remember initially when we called come to your senses 'vacuum' because the first boot of it was low quality and people thought the sample sounded like a vacuum cleaner lol good times

I've been revisiting Centipede as well and like it a lot more than my initial reaction. Lot of good songs on there. Wide Eyed is still my favorite even though it feels out of place but it's such a burner

I think the fisrt three tracks on SJ are a good 123 row. They have a sorta something to them that make me go wild. as for CHz, I'd rather go TS > RO > Applesauce personally

oh no, not at all! I mean that I like that run of songs on chz more than ntb mr mm. Moonjock is a really good opener, but i'd be lying if I say I don't skip it from time to time when i'm not in the mood

Sloggy is the perfect way to describe Moonjock as a song and an opener. Feels meandering and even exhausting. Admittedly don’t think it can go anywhere else on the album. Why it and Honeycomb didn’t swap places I’ll never know.

it's one of the more uniquely enigmatic albums that has yet been made, not just by them specifically!! there are new aspects yet to tune into!! and more from there,

I think it can also be considered, how artists do studies for works to follow in later years, Centipede Hz is one of the many series of works that allowed them to figure out the upcoming album. Noah had mentioned that around the time of Tomboy too that it is like not only a new album but also more broadly a something that helps all of the next albums to exist too.

Still imagine what this album would have been like if it was a much more raw, minimal thing that reflected the live shows at the time (as they have mentioned they were originally going for). They had a jazzy/proggy kind of feeling to them, those shows. I was really sad at the time that songs like Honeycomb and Crimson didn't make it.

A track list that looked something like this would have been pretty awesome:

Honeycomb
Today's Supernatural
Gotham
Mercury Man
New Town
Monkey Riches
Father Time
Wide Eyed
Rosie Oh
Crimson

All with that raw, gritty live kind of energy.

That said, the album turned into something totally different which I also enjoy a lot.
