Sunset should be a fucking Animnal collectice song
Good news: just been for a spin in my parallel universe travel machine and found a reality where this happened. They did it as a Skiff though https://vocaroo.com/1Uz3qaitJ9DY
at one point we were talking about band set-ups for the next AC era... i've been watching AC at MIDI Festival 2007 and really enjoyed Avey just prancing around with a microphone and a drumstick occasionally hitting something. Would love a return to Roamer Avey where he's just wandering and spilling his guts out on stage, then Panda's at a standing kit + samplers, Deakin on keys/synths (different kinds from past eras) and Geo is doing bass pedals + samplers.
i'm anticipating a rave-y kind of sound next, something maybe a little abrasive and dancey
i'd love for them to make 'forest techno,' or their pop take on what GAS did, mixed with Boredoms levels spacey psychedelic rock, and a dose of ragged ambient psych folk
edit -- one more thing. and bring back the era where their 1.5 hour sets only contain 8-9 songs. i think this one is pretty possible...LONG SONGS on the way.
Jeremy returns playing kit. Avey also on drums, but he goes full Mickey hart and plays counterpoint to Jeremy. Panda on electric guitar and samplers. Deakin on sweet sweet keys, geo teaches himself to play electric drone violin in 3 days with John Cale
This is kind of a joke but I would also genuinely be so happy

i have reason to believe "Fireworks" was born out of jamming the intro to "Turn into Something"
it's right there, even the Fireworks beat appears for a few seconds, and certainly they're approaching the guitar chords of Fireworks
---
you know how in Beatles doc, Get Back, there's that epic scene where you get to see Paul McCartney figuring out "Get back" in real time and you kinda have to just feel absolute shock and awe at watching something so magical unfold -- that's how i feel right now about listening to Avey + band figuring out "Fireworks" as they jam... amazing. this is a revelation.
also...this version of "Turn into Something" is essentially 16-17 minutes long... amazing, absolutely amazing version.
----
also notable in this bootleg -- Avey's heavily processed vocals on "Loch Raven," even at times singing some of Panda's parts with this really deep, distorted vocal effect... very sinister with the sweet twinkle of the music makes for a very alluring song... vocals seem like a precursor to #1

This short tour was so good, never heard this show but this rules. It's interesting to think of the SJ material growing out of these shows, I'll have to listen with that in mind. I always assumed they had Feels with in the can by this point in 05 and didn't have new stuff ready so they really jammed the hell out on that material, actually reminds me a bit of the current era without any of the rock band constraints.
One of my fav boots is Haverford College on that same tour where they do "Turn Into Something" for 12 minutes with a train whistle sample just thrown in the middle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2i-XopzgTPQ
I could definitely see the next era being more exploratory/freeform and harkening back to this with what Avey has been into recently. Maybe they stop sharing so much stuff before meeting up and just get together and see what happens, feels like it would make sense with their limited time together.

Yesss haverford college is so fantastic. Love the people on here where you can hear that girl asking for a cigarette for like the whole song lol. Turn into something is most definitely the highlight but every song on here sounds super tight while still having that feels chaos. Top of their game the whole way through.
There are no bad Turn Into Something boots. It's one of those songs where I really vacillate between dying to see it live because i love it and never wanting them to play it live out of fear of it not being done justice
Im just rolling in without really reading the thread so somebody might have mentioned this, but theres one early 2005 boot with turn into something that has the frog samples from in the flowers in the outro. really beautiful

bullseye
Yes?
Sounds pretty cool though, at least in the parts that are not clashing with the vocals. Could be a very nice remix with a bit more work, I think.
the 2022 rework of Working is insanely fucking good. Live album needs to happen just on the grounds of getting that and screens out officially, let alone all the current stuff

Big agree. It was one of the best songs on the tour
seeing them debut Wide Eyed, Working and Bluish in boise was genuinely one of the highlights of my life
jealous! what a great setlist: genies, magicians, and defeat. i can’t complain about the LA show because they played so many favorites but i had been hoping to hear more of the TS2 stuff in person

Yeah the LA show and the Desert Daze show from 2019 are definitely the two “play the hits” shows from this era

dude yes, that song is from one of my favorite albums ever, "Moondog 2" def check it out, all songs except the last track are short canons/rounds/madrigals whatever you want to call em, so many of them are so pretty and pleasant to listen to. his daughter's soft voice paired with his deep resonant voice, all interwoven and repeating, incredible stuff

That's super sweet, Sunset is my favorite Panda song in a long time. Master, I Know I Don't Know and some Barcelona tracks coming close. Like...
1. Selfish Gene
2. Good Girl/Carrots
3. Alsatian Darn
4. Sunset
5. No Man's Land
basically. I wonder if the other dude's pick out his tracks to make band-tracks based on like. Shit that one's so good, you should just handle it, it's all you, you know? 'Cause otherwise, why wouldnt they want Sunset to be a band track (unless it was during a kinda downtime for the band which it was). Either way it ended up perfect on the og vinyl mix
It's frankly not true that he brings his demos to the band and they pick. He might bring his leftovers and they pick but as a concept, the first suggestion doesn't stand up to any reason.
Given that he has a slightly different, cohesive approach to writing/instrumentation/sound for each solo album and new tour, there's no way that he's waiting on the band to select/reject demos before he comes up with his new live sets. He hasn't played a solo song which later became a band song since 2007.

But he explicitly said thats what he did heading into the 2019 tour

god damn desert daze was a blast. met some cool LA based CAers and wow what a set list. not to mention that the show was preceded by Atlas Sound doing Logos and Stereolab. like 4 hours of unforgettable performances in a row. fuck!!!
