I'm not questioning whether a release that's just a single and a b-side is worth releasing and buying, and the Brothersport comp is a good one, though it came out after MPP - so folks knew exactly what it was.

I'm just questioning whether they'll announce a single, leave six weeks until its vinyl release, and then announce an LP that features that single taking up a whole side of the lp vinyl in the interim. Scam is too harsh of a word - strike that. But it would seem like a strange move to me. My (disheartening but totally speculative) point: I bet we only get an album announcement in mid-September. I hope I'm wrong.

The fact that avey has extensive solo dates later this year and pb/sb seem to have another leg of their shows later in the year is making me nervous for sure. Remaining hopeful though since Noah was actively on tour with the band when reset came out

I don't think this really means anything. If the AC album comes out in the Fall as expected, the guys wouldn't really be worrying about touring that record immediately. In fact, they probably won't tour it at all since they've already played these songs on tour for a few years now. It makes sense to go and play some solo shows while we are enjoying the new record.

It's valid to think Defeat being a 22-minute single and vinyl single coming in August could throw off the schedule a bit.

But I come back to two things:
1. Domino usually follows lead singles with another single a month-ish later -- there isn't much precedence for them allowing a two-month gap between singles. The only wrench in using precedence is that this is a different case since it is a long-ass single that is being followed by a physical version. I would like to think Domino wants to keep the AC momentum going by following up Defeat with another single in August, which then that would be the opportunity to announce the album (for an October release).

2. If publications already have had a copy of the AC album for two months at this point, and the album will only be ANNOUNCED in September, that feels like a long-ass time for the album to be in their ears without them having to get a review/article ready. However, if the announcement is delayed to September, I'd expect a quick turnaround and the album to come in October.

Anyway you slice it, I think this album is coming out in October / maybe late September.

I'm thinking that's probably the case (bolded). We all gotta remember that Domino is not catering to the superfans with every decision. Or maybe any decision lol. Sending out Defeat 12"'s was really cool. and... they put their records on clearance for really cheap every now and then.

NightlifeMingus's post about their friend being surprised about the quick turnaround with the new record is probably how Domino views things. knowing they're sitting on all that material is making it all seem so insane from our perspective

I'm sorry, but no. Fans feel too entitled. Defeat is one of their biggest songs, to have unique single artwork with a live edit as the B-side months before the album is released is not even close to being a 'scam' in any sense of the word. People know what they're getting. If they're really that worried or strapped for cash then they should always wait for the next album release before buying a single

this is an insane thing to say about a vinyl release. a defeat 12" is extremely normal compared to like a million variants of a taylor swift record or most of the stuff made these days

I am having a difficult time imagining the type of fan who: A.) is willing to spring for a limited run 12” of a 22-minute animal collective song B.) has no inkling of an upcoming album, and C.) would feel ripped off if/when an album drops containing that song

It’s a collector’s item and its primary appeal is that it’s an exclusive release with unique artwork. From the band/label perspective too, I think it’s the best of both worlds: Defeat gets to have its moment in the sun as a stand-alone release AND it’s on the album

Yeah - agreed on that ABC. Nice point/s. Though I'm still inclined to think the announcement will only follow the Defeat vinyl drop. Time will tell.

i'm not saying AC or domino is committing some moral atrocity here lol, they can do what they want. but we've comfortably established at this point that if you're an AC fan who doesn't frequent this forum, you don't know that defeat is going to be on the next album, and you're probably very reasonably assuming that it won't be. the taylor swift "ten versions of the same record" thing is different because her fans are making a thoroughly informed purchasing decision (even if it's not a good one)

like, i don't think it should be very controversial to suggest that the reason there wasn't a concurrent album announcement with defeat like there was for time skiffs with prester john might be that domino would have a harder time selling defeat singles that way? or is that a stupid suggestion

i mentioned Domino release schedule trends a page back... and i think their precedence is kept here, just using the wider world of AC releases to keep the schedule

June - Defeat
July - Whirlpool Dub
August - Reset in Dub
September - AC LP announcement + single
