that's one thing that i've been missing from this tour, i love the little tidbits of info like this that they share with fans, but there has been very little bc they haven't been seeing fans after shows ever since dave and josh got covid, they were probably worried about the shows getting postponed again i bet. cool to hear this stuff about defeat and broke zodiac!

hmmmm Defeat being way different in studio makes me super nervous but I also don't really buy it. They got that song down to a science, its about the same every night (in a good way imo). But maybe that means it IS incorporating some Music Box style instrumentation,? Which at this point is kind of different even tho that was og..

Maybe we're misinterpreting what he's said here. Could "it has changed a lot" refer to the fact that it's changed a lot since the original MBV version?

That’s what i thought as well. Still hype that they “recorded it in a great way”, especially since we know they used those session musicians

For Defeat I'm imagining something like Daffy Duck but it's vamping on more movements and similarly made of light. Lizzi Bougatsos harmonies in the section that blooms and soars would melt me. Wasn't she and Tim Koh with them in the studio too? Could've just been visiting but a boy can and will dream

Noah's comments read clearly to me that the song has evolved again in the studio, beyond the Blast version. It would be weird if he just meant it's changed from the Music Box because a) they'd been playing slightly different versions of the song for three years before settling on the Blast version and b) he wasn't even there for TMB. Add in details of saxophone accompaniment and potentially extra vocalists and it seems abundantly obvious that they've done something different to it.

Interestingly enough, the first and last sections have been very consistent since the song's origin, so hopefully they've just rewritten the middle section again. The sax can do the cyclical melody building up to the crashes, replacing the Music Box strings, and whoever the other people are can do anything else instead of the current two-note oompah. That would be great.

The way they're playing original TS songs live (and how they played them pre-release in 2021) makes me think that the studio Defeat is going to pretty much be the latest live version.

Only small change I can think of re: TS1 songs from the live counterparts is the superior live Car Keys outro.

*superior car keys intro too....

I agree and really can't imagine the studio version being very different from the way they've been playing it all year. There will probably be some surprises in the arrangement with additional musicians involved but at least in terms of song structure it's gotta be set. I feel like it would be incredibly weird for them to record something completely different and still play the older version of the song. I'll gladly eat my words if I'm proven wrong here.

not gonna stop taking issue with this., u know the MBV was just 4 notes going up right. This one is like 3 going down lol. Idk man that momemnt is so beautiful and uplifting live, just entirely not even about the melody there, its layered vocals and pure energy and like, light man. o well...

yeah if they somehow got like Gang Gang people and L'Rain people to just add to what is live and were able to perform it all together live (which is what they do like evry single night basically) then it'll be ace as hell.

also agree with coral lord and opposite field that the defeat arrangement is all but set in stone. I think the most one could infer from noah's comments is that there will be surprising sounds within the mix

as an aside-
the car keys outro makes it the least noteworthy live version for me, for the very fact that the studio version includes it. so while the outro makes it stand out on the album, all the other songs that had their jams cut in the studio become more interesting live.
recursive logic tbf but ya dig?

I always appreciate the gentle sparring on this point but I can only conclude that I prefer the notes going up instead of down.

It's the two bass notes that make it sound a little dopey to me but I totally trust your experience of the live shows. Hopefully they can bring some of that to the recording.

In the quote Noah was asked about his first impressions of the song, and that’s when he said “it’s changed a lot.” I think that just means it’s evolved since he first heard it into what it is today

thinking about when we might get this and feeling like this won't be out for a while/if we get some tunes in late 2022 it'll be non album singles/an ep or something

2 weeks ago they said they were still working on the record and it hasn't fully taken shape yet. now they're going on tour for another month, then off for 2 months, then touring for another month

feel like they'll prob finish it in those 2 months off i guess? we know time skiffs was fully done by june '21 at the latest based on the dates of those freebirded spectrographs and didn't get announced till october 21 for february 22 release, not that the timeline can't move faster for future releases if they wanted to make it happen

basically thinking the earliest we will get this is early 2023, and that's if they release it in the style of this pbsb record (one month between announcement and digital release, physical release coming later). reset is coming 6 months after time skiffs, maybe this will come out in feb 23, 6 months after that and one year after time skiffs? is that too quick of a turnaround if they don't put the finishing touches on the record till october, since time skiffs was announced in october for a feb release? or was that gap just because of the vinyl record production backlog delays? the reset release plan is what gives me hope that it'll come sooner rather than later

hopefully i'm wrong, i guess i'm just a pessimist about it with how long we've already waited for defeat and magicians lol

I’m skeptical Domino will let one of their biggest bands do the shortened announce-to-release strategy that PBSB had. So I fully expect it to be a long, long wait.

I do think there’ll be some kind of single with a B-side to hold us off, but I can’t tell if it’d be to support Time Skiffs (which would make it likely to be out before Feb in time for the 1-year anniversary) or for the new album, which the announce for would follow pretty soon after.

I'm guessing they might not want to tour on these songs again and that's probably not super appealing for a label even though they probably each have a solo record/tour/some other project right behind.

I've given up on guessing when this stuff will be out at this point. That said, my preference would be getting a Honeycomb/gotham style single before the end of this year and album next year than any EP nonsense.

I don't think them not touring the new record's songs in Q1 '23 when the album actually rolls out is the issue ... they've never had a problem moving on to a new era while an older set of songs is finally coming out of course, (and labels r too dumb to even know if thats happening) but I just don't think they'll be touring period. Maybe a handful of loosies and festivals? They just toured so much this year that I can't picture a '23 leg... could happen maybe. But Panda specifically at least wants to start touring the madrid material maybe?

Idk, it could happen, maybe they'll just tour like mad and catch those bags and then go dormant til like '25 while we listen to Skiffs 2 on repeat for 2 years cuz its perfect.

I predict a single or we just GET Defeat all at once in like... Nov.

Album in Jan. Maybe. idk, could work. Single in Oct actually. or maybe now.

I think I'm only picturing Sufjan fuggin Stevens but i remember that dude dropped a huge like 10 min track for the Age of Adz era EP and sometimes I think that'll happen to Defeat. Seems kinda wrong tho... Idk, it'll be out there somehow eventually.

but ya anyway, if they're not touring at all in early '23 like i predict, than Domino really is dumb af and should strike while the iron is hot (During Euro tour)

I dunno if we could really make predictions anymore. It is uncharted territory for the band in terms of their release, and as far as it seems most of the interviews where they're unsure of the release were a while ago, and I recall dio mentioning Avey bringing up that they had an album coming out, which I wouldn't wanna do if I was unsure of the release. So. I'm gonna say, I have no fucking clue. Could be January 22 could be any time before 23. But yeah. Just my tidbit

Isn't it fair to assume that there will be an EP?
Sung Tongs
(Prospect Hummer)
Feels
(People)
Strawberry Jam
(Water Curses)
Merriweather Post Pavilion
(Fall Be Kind)
Centipede Hz
(Monkey Been to Burn Town, bleh)
Painting With
(The Painters)
Tangerine Reef
(Bridge To Quiet)
Time Skiffs
(???????)

I didn't include Meeting of The Waters and Crestone since those feel like they were made specifically for something outside of their discography (movie soundtrack/earthworks doc) I know technically TR falls into that category too.

I'm feeling like a single for Time Skiffs could have 1 or 2 cuts from this era.
Let's say, Cherokee single before the year ends... with the Dennis Bovell remix and... Gem and I? Soul Capturer?

EP next year maybe something like:
Magicians
Stride Rite
Broke Zodiac
Defeat

They have a pretty solid version of Kings Walk already "documented" with the Tiny Desk performance

Genie's Open is the odd man out. Maybe save that for the next record where they go full klezmer.

i wish i could remember if he said "album" or "record" when avey said "we have a [insert] coming out soon"

or was it "weve been working on a [blank]"

i think the former tho. i have a hyper rough recording of the ks show to comb thru i guess. it was towards end...

was thinking ab this yesterday, but defeat is so long and the other tracks are pretty lengthy as well, I mean they'll probably all get trimmed down a bit but it's still probably gonna end up being the length of an album. there's that sea of light comp on youtube, that thing is like 50 minutes, which is usually how long their albums end up being
