That kicked ass roopn.

This song wasn't before AC, but it used to play all the time at my work and piss us off because the chorus sounded like birds being attacking a village and sirens goings off and it was so distracting. Finally looked at the Spotify and found this live video of them and they were clearly inspired by AC. Just a bit of a lol. Songs not THAT bad, but definitely has an EA games vibe

It's more like they stretched a segue/buildup to Summertime Clothes, into the length of a song hahahaha. AC have chord changes in their song at least.

And yeah wow the Panda Bear cosplay, fuuuck

I remember ppl on this board discussing a little while back the extent / veracity of dub's influence on AC. imo this album really showcases the kind of dub that left a mark on AC and 2000s hypnagogic pop

Not surprisingly it's Lee Scratch Perry behind the boards and it's some of his spaciest, most detached-from-reggae dub. Song form is laid waste to in favor of carnivelesque, oneiric, repetition. Instruments are hard to distinguish and are seemless with the studio effects. I'd even say the first song does a quasi-"sample" flip AC style, turning the gospel hymn lyric "Walk in Jerusalem just like John" into "Walk in Jerusalem just like Jah" (though they sing it rather than sample it). Compare with AC's What I Do.

I put this on in the car and my wife thought it was AC so I guess that counts for something

this has probably been posted, but it's my first time listening to

Tooth & Claw by Our Brother the Native

it is a 100% rip-off of Sung Tongs that AC actually co-signed back in 2006. it's like...really really Sung Tong-ish. so if you're looking for more Sung Tongs that's not Sung Tongs... this band has got your back

Watched the 1980 PBS Lathe of Heaven movie last night and thought it was great. The dream sequences are all scored by Laurie Spiegel and give off huge ODDSAC vibes. Makes me wonder if Dave and Brian have seen this. Couldn't find just those clips but the whole movie is on youtube. 1:34 on is kind of the big climax and probably the most ODDSAC-y.

Maybe I'm just crazy but I hear lots of Avey in various They Might Be Giants songs...

the chorus of this one is totally like one of those fun upbeat Avey songs a la Burglars or something...

I'm sure this has been discussed before but from 8:00-8:55 it sounds like Paul McCartney traveled to the future and saw AC in 2007 and tried his best to replicate it in 1979. "I need ya, I need ya, I need ya, don't need ya" sounds so much like Noah it's nuts.

Local record store recently was selling a copy of the Stevie Wonder Purple Bottle 12" which I missed out on buying but it did send me down a bit of a Stevie Wonder hole which I've been having a real good time with.

This song feels a bit AC-ish to me, with the first half vocals reminding me a bit of and Avey-type sing song melody and the drums feeling pretty Skiffsy. Cool sounding synth stuff and the 1st half/2nd half song structure is also reminiscent of the current AC era.

this isn’t proto AC at all (idk if there’s another post AC thread) but this sounds quite a bit like feels-era AC, and kurt vile sounds *a lot* like avey here: https://open.spotify.com/track/1der9Scg ... ye3ageT6fA

Some thoughts on Avey’s vox. I think Avey strongly channels old singers at times. I’ve recently thought that he might have been going for a Neil Young on Spirit. Don’t laugh if that seems absurd, but after years of thinking about things that sound most similar to Spirit, I think After the Goldrush is one of the closest things I’ve ever heard. Avey’s vocals are fairly different on that record compare to everything else, and it kinda sounds like he is trying to do “a thing”, and Young is my guess for what he’s doing there. Not sure if he’s ever mentioned him as an influence or discussed him in an interview or something.

The melodic screaming style he does could be a lot of singers, especially motown and soul ones I think. Jimmy Mack is the most pure distillation of that. I wanna say he namedropped Four Tops around this time.

And I guess this one has always been there but on Time Skiffs it sounds to me there is a concerted effort to channel Jerry Garcia. I think that goes a long with the music, Skiffs has the most Dead dna by far along with his recent solo stuff. I’m not sure exactly how to articulate how the vocals on there sound like Garcia’s to me, but they do.

As for everything else, well Malkmus is the obvious one. But Avey doesn’t sound like him, at least superficially. Given his reverence for him, I do wonder if there was a time, perhaps post-Automine that Avey deliberately decided to try to sound different from Malkmus.

It's funny I only just started listening to GD and I thought this song was pretty damn cool, but it turns out there are a lot of deadheads who don't like it or think it prevents aoxomoxoa from being a perfect album. like pshhh what

Been having a crazy busy time recently and haven't been on here too much but I did manage to catch a free John Cale show in Brooklyn the other week and he opened with this random one-off 2006 single that I didn't know before and it rules so much. Not really proto-AC except for it being John Cale but Avey in Slasher Flicks mode would kill a cover of this.

The ambient-ish suite in the middle of Microcastle has always felt very AC (specifically Feels).

Listened to this album again today and thought I'd share that stretch here:

Was giving this album a listen for the first time in a while the other day. Guillotine is so damn good, King's Walk kind of reminds me of it in an odd way. Can see why the fellers are a favourite for AC, they could totally nail a cover of this if they were to.
