Yeah it must be such an odd and yucky feeling to be told "Yeah we love your new music! We love it because it sounds nothing like all the stuff you've made in the past ten years, which SUCKS and we HATE!"

Seriously, I can understand the notion that in some regard PW/TR had a distinction in some regard, maybe maybe even CHz, but that distinction isn't in a drop of quality, just their own version of experimentation, which of course was bound to scare off lite fans from the mpp hype.
Like, can't people hear the distinct CHz/PW/TR influenced in these just as much as Feels/Jam/MPP and note the distinction? I've always considered the discography to be quite living, so I've felt that even PW/TR/CHz took a lot of cues on their old stuff as well as building up. But I guess I'm also not the person to influence my opinion from a review... so...

i'm sorry but these songs sound nothing like MPP. they're just more accessible and less "weird" than the last couple albums. TS and MPP are not similar.

Torn between listening to We go Back now or waiting for Friday. If I listen to WGB that would be almost half of the album ive heard already.. hmm what to do...is it worth listening now or is it better to wait ?

Seriously, I absolutely cannot understand the people comparing this to MPP. In what way? The tunes are not sample based. The harmonies are present but implemented quite differently. Pretty sure anybody saying this is just saying "This is the first AC album I like since MPP" nothing more

bc mpp was popular and chz and pw were not and reviewers haven't listened to anco since 2009

LOVE We Go Back! Big MJ vibes from that song. Makes perfect sense as a single. Do not understand how anyone could see this fun little number as weak.

Let the record show that I love CHz. It's been my 2nd favorite for a long time. I was also very positive about PW on first listens but the hocketing and squelchy noises is just too much for my strained ears
I've never subscribed to the idea their music got worse, rather it just got a little bit different. I think Time Skiffs wouldn't have come out the way it did without CHz and PW (and other solo efforts) existing. You can definitely hear influence from those records on TS; Definitely with We Go Back. The idea that AnCo should've just done this in 2010 feels really impossible to me. They've gained so much experience willing to try out different things despite the results not being favorable to publications. It's easy to write things like this under the scope of me just being a fan on a fan website but I digress

we go back digital/spotify sounds much better than the vinyl rip imo, has me hoping the digital/cdq rip will have a little something to it that the vinyl rip seems to be missing

can 40-something year old men have a "flop era"?
I think the weirdest thing about all these reviews trashing 2010s anco is, those albums really weren't hated by the press when they came out, I feel. While those albums never made "masterpiece" status like MPP, i remember a lot of reviews just calling it "pretty good" or whatever. I guess they were held to impossible standards, tho, and the zeitgeist didnt care or wahtever
Edit: ok no i remember a couple magazines trashing PW, but it wasn't universally hated

long time listener here and I will say verses of SWE specifically make me think of a weird sequel to like Lion in a Coma or something, so I do get a MPP vibe insofar as like, this is what MPP might sound like with more acoustic (read: electric bass and more acoustic drumming than MPP's percussion).
Also PB is not thaaaaat far off from something like No More Running.
I get more Feels and CHZ from this than anything, dashes of SJ or MPP and PW (just for WGB basically)
Also have no opinion re where '10s stuff was "weirder". I mean maybe, but impossible to know what an individual means by weird. I think what makes CHZ/PW weird is that they're almost like.... TOO poppy. People might have felt that about SJ/MPP already and I feel like they pushed it further to where its like uncanny pop. Most of which I like, mind you.
Its boring the guy that thinks all their albums are like 10/10 basically. Danse, CHZ and PW might be 9s, idk.

holy smokes this video is incredibly well done. I'm already noticing bits in the track that weren't picked up on the rip

the similarities with MPP to me, i feel, lie in a sort of liquid, aquatic vibe.

Yeah, I think maybe that's what people are referring to as well. PW and CHz are extremely dry compared to feels-> MPP, more than Tongs even. But again, that to me always felt like a continuation of the dryness that exists in DM, Ark and Hollind just brought into a more accessible fold.

I only think Time Skiffs is a teensy bit better than CHz, which has one stupendous song and a few cool ones.

One big reason this eats CHZ for breakfast is... the non-avey penned songs are finally up to par, babyyyyyyyyy (love panda and deak a ton but not into their CHZ contributions at all compared to Panda 2.5 songs here and Royal)

i kind of agree, for me it’s a bit too messy. also it’s like not so accurate rhythmically in the beginning and it annoys me a bit. i guess it’s a demoitis thing and also i should wait for a proper quality version. anyway it might grow on me later, it happened before.

But I find the harmonies in Walker are some of the best they've done. I always look forward to that final part of the song.

What the fuck is the exclaim review. I'm pro review even the shot ones. Arpeggios aren't something I think of with them, I guess mpp but there aren't many on time skiffs, typically for background. And anyone know what the indie sleaze trend is???? What does that mean.
Also who is singing Where on strung ? I am typically good at discerning but the exclamation points are thicc.

The album has the mature songwriting vibes of cows on hourglass pond, with some of the proggy jamminess of CHz, and a lot of the dark wet autumn rain vibe of fall be kind, all mixed up with a new kind of silly/xylophone/young-adult-time-travel-book thing
It’s like if Einstein made a papier-mâché diagram of his acid trip and placed it inside a wooden chest and that chest was thrown off the ocean and claimed by a giant squid. And then a giant BURRITO got thrown on top of it all.
But seriously, the jury is still out for me on most of the freebird songs because the vinyl rip really does feel like someone violently scribbled with pencil over the mix

cool, ya. I hear a lil of Slasher sometimes, A Sender specifically.
The jazzy-ness and chimey/vibey/twinkly tones seem totally new. A callback to Spirit/Danse but not really quiet.
Also, ya WGB studio is sooooo much crisper and bassier than vinyl rip version.

what is the demoitis variant where you listen to too many boots and they begin to sound the same and the lower quality muddies all the shit up so when you finally hear the hq studio release it sounds like god kissing your ear?

Beach boys comparison is IMO a lot more sincere and intuitive than just an aesthetic comparison. Both bands are the only folks that I’ve heard achieve a real bubbly sense of the depth and longing of the mundane soul, in a real kind of asexual, apolitical, granola kind of way. But of course AC did this for 20 years while beach boys could only hack 1.5 albums at that quality

Trying not to listen to the bird much but just tossed Dragon Slayer on again to go with my morning coffee. I love it so much. We'll see how the dust settles but it might be my favorite album opener. It's so sunny and shining and care free, makes me feel like I'm about to have a great day with good friends and no anxiety.
The harmonies on the "wouldn't care" (im horrible at picking up words so no idea if thats right) part hit me so good
