Maybe I just wasn't paying attention, but this boot makes it easier to catch on to a bunch of cool subtleties and textures that no other boot captured until now. I'm now a full-on Time Skiffs believer.
i felt the same actually. this recording converted me from thinking this was going to be the first boring AC record to being really interested in what it'll sound like
So on November 9th 2019 Avey and Deakin played a improvised set on "Porch Life", a mobile work made by New Orleans Airlift (Also responsible for Music Box Village). The show was recorded by several ppl but it seems to have gone mostly unnoticed. My recording is pretty shit since it picked up a hell of a lot of low end, but theres also two youtube recordings.
I tried compositing and mastering the recordings and ended up with this:
If anyone thinks they have any skill in mastering live shows it would be cool of ya to give it a shot. You'll also notice that the full recordings also include other songs. Those were recordings from the music box shows that were played back before Avey and Deakin started playing.
know it's a bit of a stretch because it's kind of old and just very short clips, but does anyone have the little bits of audio from that one off ghengis cohen show avey did?? swore I downloaded it from the Dropbox link someone posted but I can't seem to find it anymore

i've never listened much to that one because the quality is so rough. i'd believe it but without hearing lyrics it's hard to separate out the components of those early songs i think? lots of introductions with long high synths and steady drumming
but yeah i think you could be right

Yeah it is a pretty raw boot. I'm just glad people, either the band or others, have been so meticulous of recording sets. It's awesome being able to hear most of them regardless of quality.
somehow only just realized that the music box 'residency' was a two-night event......do no recordings exist of the other performance? i know it was the same setlist, it's just kind of blowing my mind that they had actually played all those songs twice with that lineup
THE RECORDING: MBV says each night they had about 5 people on stage with high quality video cameras and a few go-pros thrown in the mix too. They said the audio is high quality as well: 32 channels which can be mixed & mastered into near studio-quality audio. I think MBV said that they have past videos that we can check out for reference on a vimeo account called New Orleans Airlift? Haven’t checked those out yet.
Found the vimeo channel for Airlift/MBV, probably not what you meant but I have to imagine a portion of this will see the light of day if it was recorded in this kind of quality https://vimeo.com/user7961637
Rob Carmichael: my favorite early moment was when they played this movie theater in the East Village in 2001 (2002?) with Gang Gang Dance and Blue Pot Green Pot (I think) . At this point they made up new song s for almost every show but they had just gotten back fro a tour or something and didn't have time. So they projected film that they shot on the road and the four of them played a 45 minute set using just one chord the whole time. It was glorious and strange and droney and I wish that it had been recorded. I desperately want to put it on the Animal Crack Box but no recordings seem to exist.

was there personally both nights and I believe the 2nd night was best for sure, and the recordings/boot seem to both be of the 1st night.
I was personally on a mildly not-great acid buzz for 1st night and was distracted cuz it felt like people were talking too much or sumn... I was just kind of out of it 1st night and could only sort of glimpse the greatness of the vibe
the 2nd night was St. Patricks day and I got a great spot and it killed me, in a good way. Might not have gotten another ticket if 1st night went better.
Not saying they played better necessarily, but it all hit me harder. Since we seem to know they were professionally recording, hopefully once day we hear the sound boards of Night 2.
I mean objectively, makes sense they'd be even better after doing it with a full crow once before
This is the brainchild of user TangerineEyes. Him and I met during the Fall tour and became fast friends. He knew I had recorded audio and offered up his excellent video recording of the show. I had a blast tinkering with his footage and mashing it together with my recording.
So, in the spirit of celebrating friends, family and everyone in between, here's a special holiday treat. Have a wonderful holiday, fellow animals!
I will be posting a bunch of remasters of live sets over at this other thread I'm working on. The Othermusic remaster and Music Box mixed sources recordings are the same ones listed in the archive in page one in this thread. Do what you will with the Rusty Santos, Panda & Deakin, and Live on DubLab sets I've added so far.
jfw7 help me
what is "Vostok" by Geologist?
Someone in the boards mentioned it and said that nobody was ever going to hear it.
Please grant me assistance on my quest for the deep-cut holy grail.
um just digging around i think it was some guy's nickname for a geologist solo recording
a 2007 interview with b.w. mentions an abandoned soccer star EP from ~1999, and some people were joking(?) that it confirmed there was a lost "vostok" recording. i can't find a working link to the interview
i hope you find some deep cut holy grails, but in 2021 it's hard to know if they're out there on the web y'know! potential goldmines are maybe:
– that youtube account slowly trickling out concert recordings from paris since the 00s. surely there are other resources like this out there—someone archiving a single scene over decades—but this is the only account i know about.
– ebay or whatever for alternate releases. didn't the full tomboy instrumentals léak from like a disc intended for NPR bumpers?
— the European Web (EuroWeb) or other non-US sites for people posting about shows, particularly in other languages. i did some digging into the Noah's Ark shows a few weeks back (i was hoping to find a japanese reference to them under that name but no luck; did you know the venue is called "shibuya o-nest" not just "shibuya nest" though?) and it's somehow exciting to just find real proof of them in 2004 or whatever. unfortunately these aren't likely to turn up audio imo
— private tørrent sites for concert bootleg trading. i know there are a few people on the boards that have mentioned these and it's not a world i'm part of. AC is taper-friendly so i encourage anyone with private membership to share what you find
— random personal connections. there's no reason to bother people but i've asked a few folks about their history with the band in the early years (early tourmates, their automine bandmate, etc.). i don't think anyone is going to share material the band doesn't want out there, but again it's affirming to think about seeing them on tour with hair police or whoever. and, if you get the sense someone's holding on to something special, ask respectfully and then stop bugging them when they say no! i found contact info for a guy with one of the only copies of the pre-magnetic fields "Buffalo Rome" cassette and emailed about it and he said that stephin had asked him to keep it private. so i stopped asking!

also, while the thread is slightly off-topic anyway, i'm redownloading my CA3 archive page-by-page since it's not searchable in its current state, and i wanna apologize for needlessly being an asshole in pretty every post i made back then. i had the wrong idea about what it meant to post on a web forum and thought that not only was it funny to be mean, but it was more important or more likable(?) to be mean than to even be funny. i recognize a lot of names reading through those posts and i know that i said shitty stuff to people who are still posting here now. i'm sorry, and i'm glad to still be a part of this community with folks who are also long timers.
idk if i'll make a searchable version of CA3 online anywhere, but i at least wanted a copy to be able to search locally. also, typing that sentence reminded me that i uploaded the archive to mediafire 10 years ago. dang it

Thank you jwf7 I got really obsessive when I was like 12 or something and wrote the complete guide to animal collective's back discography (complete complete!) on the dead fandom wiki that was so dead and bare bones it listed TTG as a CD release. It hasn't been updated in a while, but I will clean it up and send the link, and you can tell me what I left off.
As for this thread, I appreciate it a lot because it's the thread that seems the most focused and effective. I can post on here and it wont get lost, like if I posted in the Time skiffs thread and two days later it would be buried under 20 pages. Thanks for the big win for the AC historians!
This is one of the all-time great resources I've ever experienced. I have everything downloaded on several devices just in case. Thank you more than I can say, jfw7.
also, can anyone recommend me a good-quality Deakin solo boot that has the tracks that didn't make it to Sleep Cycle (e.g. Island Chase, Elastik, etc)?

I can't say which one is the best because I haven't critically listened to them all, but the one I always was the biggest fan of was Floristree.
Glasslands is probably your best bet because it has all of the songs minus just am and good house and it's on NYC taper, which has consistently fine quality. I haven't checked it out yet.
dunno about the rest of the songs but music hall of williamsburg has the best island chase, hands down
also, theres an extremely HQ live version of "2friends" on some compilation that is worth checking out, practically studio quality
also footy from Paris 2010-01-18 is godly, def worth checking out. there are a bunch of parts of it that didn't make the studio version that get me every time: holding up, i'm holding up, i'm weighted down ;( watched my father wither away...i just want to be a happy man, man i'm trying hard
thanks all! excited to dig in. I think I'll start with the Glasslands show since it covers most of the bases (though I think is still missing II and [When I Get Home] from earlier shows)
Split and remastered a bunch of classic sets like:
Avey Live at Echo, CA
Avey Live with Bjorn Copeland
Avey Live with Deakin on Porch Life
Avey Live with Deradorrian at Family, CA
As well as mildly remastering some radio sets for anyone who's interested in that:
AC Live on KVRX (07-11-03)
AC Live on BBC 3 (05-24-04)
AC Live on BBC 1 (11-01-05)

Sorry for the late reply on this. I couldn't find the audio I put together but I do still have the video clips so I just combined those into a single video.
