maybe this is a strech but bb king's vocals are pretty crazy here, they both make some trippy layered sounds together on the guitar as well.

Anyone ever listened to Woo/Woo Who? Their song "The Western" really reminds me of Animal Collective, and some other stuff from It's Cosy Inside does too. I really enjoy them. Just started listening to them recently.

Don't think anyone's posted this yet but this cluster track gives me some lo-fi mpp vibes maybe? Has the band ever mentioned cluster?

Came out the same year as Feels so it's not really 'proto-AC,' but this Ris Paul Ric record sounds so much like a cross between Sung Tongs and Feels. Plus it was produced/mixed by Tim Hecker!
I am a huge Q and not U fan--probably my favorite band before I discovered AC--but this album holds a special place in my heart too.
Plz check it out!

I'm just now getting into the police. They're amazing. The AC influence is actually really clear, I didn't expect that. stewart copeland is a nuts drummer too

Stewart Copeland is PBs favorite drummer! Stewart Copeland saying, "I'm really a frustrated guitar player" reminded me of something PB would say.

The most inspiring drummer for me is Stewart Copeland from The Police. The Police are the first band I can remember really liking, and Copeland is a guy who was playing in sort of a rock band, or a rock-pop band, but he didn't want to do the traditional kind of rock drumbeat. He was doing all these kind of reggae rhythms, and the reggae style is almost an exact opposite of the rock mold of drumming, in that the hits of the bass drum and the snare drum are kind of switched. A lot of reggae drummers play the snare drum on the side, clicking the side of the drum. I got into that sort of thing a couple years ago, playing on the rims a lot. Although a lot of the clicky-clacky kind of minimal house music got me into that sort of thing, too. And hearing a lot of African music—those are like the most complex, crazy rhythms. You can't really copy that sort of thing. They're just sweet, sweet jams.

If you're short for time, listen to Driven to Tears as a sampler of everything great about this album. Also Copeland's drumming on that track is incredible. Or try Voices Inside My Head for a bit of a jammy proto-Time Skiffs feel.

Stings voice drives me crazy but The Police makes a lot of sense as an influence for PB's music in general, not just for copeland

Got into The Proclaimers' first album recently after noticing how some bits of "Letter to America" felt like some MPP songwriting. It might be a bit of a stretch, but I feel like they developed a poppier version of ST/MPP's soaring dual vocal melodies.

This came on and reminded me a whole lot of Dragon Slayer, that synth tone/melody is eerily similar (and similarly gorgeous) especially @ 1:10

It’s recent so not “proto” but this Dijon track is heavy on the Sung Tongs vibes, especially the song’s climax toward the end:
This is cool, been hearing a lot about this guy and this makes me want to finally dig in.
I know XTC comes up all the time but I've been relistening to some of their stuff and listening to stuff I haven't heard and keep being surprised by how similar things feel. Huge CHZ/Strawberry Jam vibes from this opening track on Mummer.

I think the lyric goes "Look, we'll have similar songs"

When SWE dropped all I could think of was this song from the PS1 game Moon (which thinking of it now shares a lot of DNA with Skiffs)
