the band is slowly running out of eras to release a live show from... we just got 01/02, that 04 feels show from a while back, all of ballet slippers (07-09)..
fingers crossed for an 03 show soon, bonus points if it's post-june for the addition of electronix

as far as I know Spirit songs never really happened live (until they were like reworked in 07 onward) it's just kinda a home-studio recording type era between Dave and Noah. could be wrong, but I think Dance/Hollindagain is their earliest live era
there's a live gap between automize shows and like early danse stuff in NY I assume

I vaguely remember avey saying they would play some spirit songs (way wilder than the original recordings) as avey tare and panda bear in the earliest NYC shows in 2000

AC did a few campfire songs performances in 2000/2001. Danse/Hollinndagain shows in 2001. HCTI in '02. And sung tongs in '03. They only did on STGSTV show though

listening to 2 Nights and remembering that i never posted about a conversation i had with Avey after one of his solo shows for the Birds tour about setting up a live archive. he was enthusiastic and he said they have multitracks from the CHz era onward.
from what i remember (the show was back in december, so i'm struggling to recall the exact conversation), he was saying he spoke to Fugazi about their live archive to get some advice and that he's interested in doing it, but that maintaining a database is pretty expensive. but he did say that the band is going to be reissuing their back catalog through Domino and I think he was implying the release of live shows as they reissue older albums.
also, I asked him about Ballet Slippers and whether any of the recordings were sourced from multitracks and he said that they weren't

Wow changing the HCTI title back to Ark was the best way they could have handled that, good on them!

Quick shoutout to how generous the AC boys are. As a group and as individuals, thousands and thousands of dollars of royalties from their music has been (and is still) going to charities and other altruistic initiatives. It's awesome that my favourite band also consist of genuinely awesome people. Much love to you Avey, Deak, Panda, Geo, and co.

Sure, I do feel compelled to share this e-mail I sent to brian though.

Good evening Brian,
We've corresponded before via a different e-mail. I just want to say I understand the reasons behind changing HCTI's title to Ark. I don't speak for everyone--how could I?-- but I just want to say as a Native Alaskan, that Animal Collective has helped me feel closer to my culture not farther. "Cultural appropriation" feels like a loaded term, and it ignores the realities that actually harm indigenous peoples. In high school I saw scholarships awarded to rich white kids with the narrowest fraction of blood quantum while the actual community was tossed aside to scramble for scraps in public assistance and shitty jobs. Procter & Gamble infiltrated an annual native tradition here and literally lined a Native stage with Tide laundry detergent. I don't personally think any art is a threat to culture, I'm terrified to see that burden put upon artists and not the craven politicians and corporations that are willing to trade human lives for capital. They are the ones who should be taking responsibility for the systemic racism that plagues this nation today. That being said, what else are we left to do but accept these small moral victories? The Washington Redskins, the Atlanta Braves--among other terrible brands--genuinely and inarguably profit from racism and will likely continue to proliferate casual bigotry. What is there past numb acceptance? How do we raise hell?

Hear hear. I don’t get how HCTI is a problematic album title. I thought it was an inside joke about Dave’s sister. Someone enlighten me...

imo Ark fits the claustrophobic sound of the album better than HCTI

Back catalogues being uploaded right now! First rarity is mountain game which I believe is the first time it'll be available in a better quality than mp3

i understand the point of changing the title of HCTI back to Ark but i don't feel like it will actually do a whole lot. i've never come across anyone who even showed a hint of ire towards the title, but i could be wrong there
