Very very very disappointed by Midnight Special but I knew I was going to be. I agree with Stan in that I thought surely Avey would recognise that the hype around that song came from its vocal energy and emotion. But it's his song and it's still a decent one.

The other songs are great! Can't wait to hear the other two. What a year it has been for Avey.

I listened in the dark as I woke up, did he write this or just record something backwards? I love it
Is the ding bling ding bling part the second song or is this all Midnight Special?
If stan is sad then I smile, cosmic karma is really. This is the song he likes right

Also the beginning of Red Light Water Show really reminds me of Hair Cutter, to the point where I swear a Hair Cutter sample was used.

here's a little story about a curious time when I-
too much mystery's not always such a good thing
pal child, i can cry
there's a little finger that i want to touch
explicit accident filled with meaning
pal child, i can cry
i smashed my phone, the pain came with that
tried to think of other things like my mother told me but-
pal child, i can cry
my heart is open to it now
i want it to be so special to me
i like it to be so special to me
i can't take it right now
it's killing me now
right now, right now
there's a little sparrow on the wooden board
i saw a magic thing in water reflections
pal child, you can cry
i planted the bushes so fruits would grow just to please the tongues that would taste them in the morning
pal child, you can cry
my heart is open to it now
i want it to be so special to me
i like it to be so special to me
i can't take it right now
it's killing me now
right now, right now
pal child, i can cry
my heart, it opened to it now
my heart, it opened to it now
i like it to be so special to me
i want it to be so special to me
but i can't take it right now
it's thrilling me now
right now, right now

love the discourse and tempers flaring over "midnight spesh" rn seem to be bringing 2 decades worth of demoitis to a head, and judging by this when defeat (banshee row) studio drops half the forum will get banned and stanshant will get prescribed something specifically for animal collective related trauma

LOL yes. "banshee row" lmao. all the added instrumentation on midnight special is so good damn. is that upright bass/cello during the chorus?? the piano is gorgeous. the chord change/transition from the verses to the chorus is huge, esp on the "tried to think of other things like my mother told me but" also it sounds like at least the first two choruses he changed 'thrilling' to 'killing' so the change in delivery there makes sense, i only hear 'thrilling' the last time he sings it

true on all points. you forgot the part where stanshant comes back around for a lot of the stuff that's super disappointing to him right when the records drop.

i'd actually read Stan's dismay over this song before listening to it and was expecting some Taken Boy-esque letdown, but this is great!

since I'm 31 and have been listening to AC for half my life now, I feel like I've gotten to where I am able to handle whatever changes they throw when the records drop after having played the songs live beforehand. I probably don't obsess over the boots to the degree that I did from '06-'11, so that might play a factor as well.

lol the disc one lyrics

we can talk about that time that i was light
disc one: moves to havana, colorful sorrys, friends with muppet hats
disc one: college frat party, cafe in venice, sunny boys
disc two is sad that disc two spaces out
disc two's cool but disc two knows it's not
disc one: songs for the atmosphere
disc one: songs for your kid
and we can talk about that time when i was light
disc one: good for the new bird, clink of glasses, another round of that
disc one: rounds the hippies, up with the science, digs the rest
disc two is worried that no one stops around
disc one is happy that they remember them
disc one: songs for the atmosphre
disc one: songs for your kid
and we can talk about that time that i was light
disc one: covered in wawa, moves like the buddha, has aftereffects
disc one: didn't get sappy, plays the tuba, loves G flat
disc two's got something that disc one doesn't
disc one knows that disc two knows it's not
disc one: songs for the atmosphere
disc one: songs for your kid
and we can talk about that time that i was light

yeah i def try to compartmentalize the boots and look at them as separate entities from the eventual studio releases. been pretty successful at that for a while, the last time i was truly disappointed was with how selfish gene/nadir turned out (and to a lesser extent jabberwocky and popadam). that one hurt too much to not protect myself lol

wow I really love how red light water show and disc one came out, very different from what i imagined...the atmospheric sounds in red light are amazing
midnight special feels pretty similar to the 10" tracks that came with cows to me....sort of flat/even-keeled and definitely nowhere near as impactful as the live version on first listen but truthfully that was never a fav mothlight track of mine anyway, and of course that version hasn't gone anywhere (and that goes for that whole show, which is easily one of the all-time best ac live recordings)

Not surprised at all that some people are willing to gratefully gobble up whatever crumbs of crusty winnet the band scatter contemptuously in your direction. Tuck in, friends, and I will sustain myself on the pure hope that they somehow don't ruin the two good songs they write in the next decade. I am seriously considering cutting ties with band at this point. They don't appear to have taken on board any of the feedback I have posted on this forum since 2007.

Here's my final piece of well-meaning advice: That harpsichord in Defeat is even more fergalicious than your drug-addled fanbase. Cheers.

Yeh I'm mad

Joking aside, I realised a long time ago that this is a band who are best live and the bootlegs are the best representation of who they are. It's been this way since...When has it not been this way?

Even the stillborn ebola homunculus PW came to life when they started touring it. Going back to the records I heard before the boots, pre-SJ, where demoitis was never even a possibility, it's clear that it was always this way. I love a lot of their albums and a few stand comfortably alongside the live recordings but they are a band which makes consistently underwhelming records and their instincts in the studio are often to tone down the energy and emotion, for whatever reason.

Midnight Special for me is the Mothlight performance where it first meant something to him, not this AOR housewife coffee morning book club palliative care wallpaper soundtrack.

The Beatles white album ‘disc one’ features the upbeat Ob-Bla-Di-Obla-Da and the colorful and bouncy Back in the USSR. Disc two’ features the avant-garde Revolution #9 and super dark Yer Blues.

But also both sides have so many other killer tracks which are both upbeat and dark. don’t know, I digress. Just thought it was funny and topical because Dave mentioned it in his IG post.

yeah i forgot about grim reaper boots. but i still really love GR and just go to the two sets of in studio boots that Pete gave us when I want to hear the OG papadum/ ms pac man / g yeah / jabberwocky run. I think cosplay was a little bit of a let down before I read that Noah felt like the boot version of that was as good as he was going to be able to make so looked at the EP version of that one as a totally different thing.

That doesn't work because Midnight Special is literally the soundtrack to nine holes in a Pringle polo shirt and pink sleeveless Joules sweater with Joan, Gary and family, you ape eared bottom feeder.

That quote is amazing. Sounds like a monologue in a movie or something done by an old character (father figure type) to his protégé as he released he was wrong all along not to support his choice.
