Yep the LP packaging looks identical, it's a bit better purely for records already being housed in thin cardboard sleeves. Had the same gripe about the CD cause I wanna buy it for the car but it looked so sad in the music store. Domino did the same thing to Tangerine Reef

the cows vinyl packaging sucks for sure. eucalyptus, buoys, and pretty much all other domino releases have nice sturdy sleeves. not sure why cows is so cheap, the record was just as expensive as always.

Seriously! The new Cass McCombs CD is how I like CD releases: sturdy cardboard, gatefold, extensive liner notes, frickin bulging with stuff. I also like the “updated jewel case” with the plastic tray but cardboard everything else, like the new Xiu Xiu record, Girl With Basket of Fruit, which was my record-of-the-year until Cows came out. I feel like Jamie Stewart and Dave ride a similar wave in terms of experimentation and emotional intensity that is unmatched in music.

Any Xiu fans here?

man that just gave me the horrible thought that if there are animal collective fans here who didn't get into the band until 2013, are there xiu xiu fans whose first album was like angel guts or whatever? does their bush-era stuff age well if you weren't around for it back then??

but yeah of course. although i disagree with your "similar wave", i think they're a completely different approach to songwriting and pretty much everything else. i don't even know the best way to kevin bacon between them other than big multi-drummer things like boadrum or whatever. different coasts man

also heads up that there's a XITSJ compilation (reissue?) coming out on RSD

apologies for what will surely be an extended xiu xiu derail

They're totally different! I was just trying to connect them in some metaphysical way or something, not necessarily sonically. There's a psychedelic and uninhibited expression of feeling in both of their sound worlds that is rare in art. Or maybe they're connected in my mind because they are two artists I've followed closely over my life. I discovered Sung Tongs and A Promise around the same time, totally upending my musical education like nothing before. Have to admit I think Xiu Xiu lost the plot a bit in the mid-aughts (Women As Lovers through FORGET) but his Plays the Music of Twin Peaks record and the new one feel like a revival of the "golden era" (Knife Play through La Foret, for me).

Thanks for the Ten in the Swear Jar heads-up! And yeah I think the "Bush-era stuff," for both groups, has aged particularly well. I might just be nostalgic for 2003-05 tho. :D

xiu xiu fucking rules. and i got into them with Dear God I Hate Myself...the only record of theirs that really does nothing for me is La Foret. and i guess you could Kevin Bacon them through Grouper since she's opened for AC and remixed XX

Oh fuck they also did a collab EP in 2006

but she remixed Tonite and Today from knife play. and fabulous muscles is my favorite record of theirs...the air force and a promise are probably tied for second.

uh, "Ale" was my first favorite xiu xiu song though

and good call re: grouper. not great but as close as anything else

not to further derail, but yeah xiu xiu is maybe the only other band i like as much AC, at least currently. don't think they have an album i don't like.
and good call about ale, that song is incredible, his delivery of "shut up, shut up" is top ten xiu xiu moments.
and one more thing, native belle and blacks remind me of each other with the whole "quiet/loud/quiet" thing

Im really really starting to dig this
Maybe its because of the music Ive been listening to lately but this is hitting the spot
I wouldve expected eucalyptus to strike a bigger chord with me since its very in my ballpark in terms of sound and feeling but this one is connecting
Yea good album hehe

it took until the live show for me to accept this as possible, which - as a panda stan i didn't think was - but like yah I think the cows era is greater than the panda era, which is to say both are extremly good works of art

still can't get over Tipped in Hugs. idk what it is but the song brings me so much joy, the way Avey is singing is just too perfect, it's so jaunty

also Taken Boy has weirdly emerged as a favorite for me. I really like how restrained it is and the way the bass doesn't come in until the 2nd verse. just a really pretty and psych-y song. I've never heard the old live version so I'll have to check it soon to see how it changed

This is probably Avey's best full length album I'd say. I'm rather partial to his split with David Grubbs overall though. Some parts, especially Remember Mayan, are way too indie rock/adult contemporary for my tastes so I'm not sure how much I will continue to appreciate it, but first listen was enjoyable.

Remember Mayan gets stuck in my head. I guess I can see how it might strike people as too plain (same with Tipped in Hugs but I like that too).

loved the old when you left me , the synth and all ... so when I herd the new version a couple times , i was eh its a bit slow , but i gave it another listen and have that appreciation for it now that i missed before ... i love the relaxed pace of it and it does seem more powerful in a way that the other version with the synth ... like just peace and quiet ... this tour is rocking my stocking : ) thanks tarey

Interview with Dave

~23:30 he says he recorded Enjoy the Change with the intention of releasing it, it's definitely a solo song, and the way they've been playing it on this tour is pretty much the way he recorded it.

edit- someone on reddit said they also asked about the song and dave said he had some other stuff that he was working on for an ep. hopefully that comes out soon and includes midnight special

picked up cows on CD - the cardboard sleeve is a bit flimsy which is disappointing but the quality of the printing is actually excellent, and the artwork is of course beautiful. RE: the discussion a few pages back, not as bad as I was expecting!
