i also never thought home free would grow on me this much. i was a bit underwhelmed by it after the first few listens, but now i think its really the perfect closer for the album. i don't know how it manages to bang so hard with just a few guitar chords and these dripping drum sounds. i'd really like to hear this song live.

I expected this to fade somewhat because it's so minimalist but on the contrary, I'm enjoying it all more and more. Only bits I'm unsure of are the verses of Master, just a touch nursery rhyme which sometimes makes me want to skip, and a couple of lyrics are a bit on the nose/shit - 'fly so high', in particular, but there are a couple more. Otherwise, it's a colossal record, the kind of thing I would have completely explored and inhabited and worn day upon day a decade ago. At 38, I don't have the same luxury but I'm giving it my best shot. Adore it.

Totally agree, kidder. Panda Bear songs are probably more singable to me than anything else I've ever heard. I have a similar sounding singing voice (yeah, big call) and I especially love to sing his low register stuff, particularly with the live variations and stuff.

Same. The songs and production seem relatively straightforward, plus some of the songs I didn't really care for at first so I wasn't sure how much staying power this album would have. Glad to say that I was wrong about that!

Do your kids join in on the Panda singalong?

I love Wonderful Christmastime and now I need to hear Noah cover it

Definitely a car sing along album to the point where I had to stop singing because I was getting to attached to the ben versions

but I really love this, it really does exist to me in the realm of music that pushes pop forward in a Real way that doesn’t adhere to the myth of progress but is just this fun, personal, exploratory bullshit. I like to be emotional when I drive and this album gives me the same familiar goosebumps and it’s just the best.

yeah totally agree – it's doing something really fresh and inventive but it also just feels like Panda having fun and doing what he feels, not focusing on pushing boundaries or whatever

yeah and like I’m not trying to make that a boogyman as such, like that intentionally pushing boundaries is a bad thing, just that this is at the perfect intersection of enjoyable to listen to/interesting to listen to - and that’s what I’ve always loved about the band and all their music. when they are Doin it Right it’s really really really beautiful and cute and inventive and like you said fresh but I also genuinely feel inspired and impressed by the decisions and choices they make

i hate being such a fanboy sometimes. like it’s somehwat childish and silly to analyze a band like this. but goddamn I love em and feel personally attached at this point, and things that make me feel good and happy like I was when I was 14 shouldn’t necessarily be bad things. except maybe like hentai dating rpgs

yeah man, I really feel all of that!! it's cool to hear someone else is thinking about these aspects of the music. That whole idea of enjoyable to listen to vs interesting to listen to – that makes me think of a similar dichotomy of pop music vs experimental music, that's a relationship I've been thinking about a lot lately, and where that boundary lies and how exciting it is when artists can successfully bridge the gap in a way that is not really concerned with those kinds of dichotomies, or with subverting them. And def agreed that it's not necessarily a bad thing to intentionally aim for boundary pushing, it's just that it's really cool the way it's pulled off here (and throughout Panda/AC's discog)

and yeah don't even get me started on being a fanboy. I get so fucking obsessive about music, see my av for example lol. sometimes wish I didn't get that way but it makes me happy too and I try to just embrace it and celebrate this music that brings me so much joy

Home Free is still my least favorite but it's slowly growing on me. I love the off beat bass thing before each of the big booms (the "low to go" section).

I started to love Home Free as the closer when I realized the last lines of the song and thus the album are literally, "See you around…"

Speaking of which... the great MPP Christmas miracle of '08 happened a decade ago in 6 days. Fuck. I can't believe it's been that long.

Buoys is really clicking with me this week. I'm in love with this record. It's weird because my first impressions were that this album is a bit too thin and there's not enough to chew on sonically (Greaper was packed with sounds and I'm still hearing new things buried with each listen). Now that I'm familiar with the tracks, the actual songwriting is having a huge impact. Still digesting the lyrics and as I do my appreciation is growing. I also noticed while skipping through the tracklist in the car (when I'm at home I like to listen to records from beginning to end... while driving I browse) that most of the songs begin in a similar place and when taken as a full experience, each song connects creating a single thread through the entire record. Each song on Greaper sort of had a individual aesthetic and Buoys could almost be a 30 minute single track.

I also find it strange that my brain doesn't consider this a "acoustic" album even though that's the foundation for most of the songs. I think it's the mix that's tricking my brain. I'm into it.

^Good post, you're totally right about the songs all having a connecting thread, especially compared to Greaper. I'm really glad people are digging this. It has just gotten better and better with each listen for me. Which is impressive because it's on constant rotation (SA'WHEEEEUHL)

Dolphin is such a marvellous opener. It's possibly my favourite song now it's all settled down. I love his voice, seems very naked but it's actually bent out of shape just enough by the production to keep it evolving in an unexpected way.
