my ideal tracklist would be
moonjock
todays supernatural
rosie oh
honey comb
applesauce
new town burn out
monkey riches
gotham
feel like the album opening and closing with those guitar riffs would be neat.

if you took off applesauce for fathertime and mercury instead of moonjock, it'd be the setlist from the first shows of that era, presumably before MJ, Apple, Pulleys and Amanita were conceived. And add crimson
actually that is maybe a better alternate than the first thing i posted... like go with the first cover Abbey made without daves, do basically the setlist from those first shows and then you'd have this whack little power- EP
Moonjock
Applesauce
Pulleys
Amanita
that's a really heavy and great ep.... and the album would be weirder and moodier without them, and with crimson, honey and gotham instead... and a bit shorter.... still so indifferent on Wide Eyed and only like Monkey and New Town slightly more but i guess theyre fine sometimes... just bad compared to Mercury, TS and mooooost avey songs from this era that arent Monkey. I kinda get monkey these days tho...

Should’ve kept the og album cover and gave the album the same dirty production that homies has. Feels like there’s this weird juxtaposition between a weirder noisier album and polished clean production.... should’ve been sharper and more distorted and rockier if that makes any sense , minor gripes though it’s still my fav band making good songs !

In retrospect it doesn't always feel like my favorite production from them but then sometimes it feels like a really good ear massage so idk

After years i'm not into it. Don't like the excessive juxtaposition of all these layers (just someone says before) and there are very few memorable tunes. I never listening to it.
I love Rosie Oh, but i never understand the meaning of the words

also this album hasnt aged well for me, the production sounds noticeably worse than anything else in their career. Unless someone can convince me that they meant it to sound like it has the air sucked out of it

i've had chz era boots on for the past couple days and i still love this collection of gnarled, twisted songs.
i think the album's production succeeds in capturing some very tricky, layered melodies in such a way that you can hear different things with each new listen. while their other albums (ST, Feels, MPP) have a much more organic production that breathes, this is meant to overwhelm the senses and demands attention. so i think the resulting album succeeds in what it's trying to do. the band's goals are just vastly different from album to album.

I agree. Love the boots, The album is its own beast and seems to be intentional from my point of view. I loved all the little sounds I discovered upon repeat listens. I think im gonna rock this one today!

CHz's concept is "radio signals travelling through space", right? So it makes sense to me that it sounds like a radio recording— crackling, noisy, warm, little dynamic range. So I have no doubt that the production is a very conscious, deliberate decision.
But I don't think being intentional means it's necessarily good (or at least beyond reproach). Taking such dense, layered songs and crushing it into the mid-ranges makes it feel indistinct and muddy, and to me that makes it genuinely exhausting to listen to. There have been a number of times I put on CHz but have to give up after a few songs because it's just draining me.
I actually like the songs a good deal, but I think they play better when the production opens up and gives them the chance to breathe, as on the boots (and Live at 9:30). When I want to revisit this era, I typically do it that way.
I will add, though, that it sounds great through car stereo, and makes for a killer driving album.

I was singing the first couple lines to clap your hands say yeah's "some loud thunder" by clap your hands say yeah today and my wife's mind was blown because she was sure that they had ripped someone off. she'd never heard the song. after investigation, turns out she felt like the melody from amanita during the final "what're you gonna do? go into the forrest" part sounds a lot like the verse melody to some loud thunder. I can see it, but mostly to the fact that the melody on "say" and "name" descends in a similar way.

thought i'd share because it was kindof amusing and interesting to me that she spotted it and not me given that i'm the AC obsessionist between the two of us. thoughts?

Only really hear it in the very first line, funny coincidence though.
On the subject of alternate tracklists I never bothered with CHz because so many of the songs fade into the next. But I came up with something that requires only a little bit of editing. Feel like there's more air in it and definitely
Moonjock
Today's Supernatural
Gotham
New Town Burnout
Monkey Riches
Honeycomb
Rosie Oh
Mercury Man
Crimson
Pulleys
Amanita
I'm consider doing another pass at TS into Gotham, but w/e for now. A couple of the transitions
Of course Applesauce, Wide Eyed, and Father Time would be an EP.

Pulleys live is so good. It feels so dead like to me (grateful) I love how start the song normally, then they go out there and then come back to finish the song. Its so good. It's my anco dark star right now.

I love how they adopted that for Summertime Clothes on the last leg of the PW tour too!

I really love the pulleys spacey jam but the summertime clothes version of it did nothing for me weirdly enough

Honestly, Centipede Hz is probably my favorite album of theirs besides Sung Tongs. Listening to it for the first time in a while. Really only weak song on it is Pulleys imo. I think that some of the negative reactions to Chz have influenced the way I see it now. Before I joined this board and before I realized the reaction was so negative, I was blown away by the album. I would listen to it every day for months (no joke). I wish more people got into it, but I also guess i understand why so many dislike it

Funny, I listened to this album front to back for the first time in a while last week and my biggest takeaway was that Pulleys was especially good, better than I remembered t being. Applesauce is def the champ but Pulleys is right up there in the "second best" tier with Moonjock, Today's Supernatural, Rosie Oh, New Town Burnout and Amanita.

Pulleys was my least favorite track (the only one I was initially disappointed with) until I heard the live version and the studio cut really clicked for me after that.

I really liked the acoustic version need to check that session out again.
I’ve had a connection in my head between this and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. To the point I considered making a long mix of the two albums fading into one another. The whole radio theme and they were roughly the same age when they made the respective albums. Only difference is YHF is widely considered Wilco’s best and CHz is...well not quite as adored :/
