Marijuana make my day
Someone should make a companion guide to Animal Collective and mind manifesting chemicals. Sell it in smoke shops along with their records and there´s a lot of money to be made!

I used to have never been stoned if that helps.
But hey we respect you if you respect us. That's all there is to it.
We love you Camino, stoner pal or not. You're still a friend forever

haha thanx pumpkin
You always bring good vibes around here!
I think my 17-ness has a lot to do with it, so who knows what'll happen. I was just a little curious.
Anyway, back on topic, my friend who listens to metal predominately downloaded mpp about a month ago (because he knows i love AC) and he hasn't said a single word about it haha, at least it worked for one friend.

Thanks brother as do you and everyone on here !!
All my friends used to give me the hardest time too man, just bagging AC so hard saying "Yo Animal Collective sucks dick man !" until a few good listens man, they were hooked. I think Merriweather did the trick, and working your way back, my friends now tolerate Spirit, which I can totally say is a well accomplished goal, I mean that's pretty impressive. Merriweather is pure ecstasy to the ears, a wave of soothing orgasmic chanting rhythms that grabs a hold of you and doesn't let go. And you know what the best part is...
They're not sell outs. And for that I believe that deserves a round of applause. Doing what so few musicians do and stay dedicated to music and fans only and not money and publicity. Thank you AC !

@El Camino: I hadn't been stoned until 10 months ago, so I understand your position (I'm 17 too!). It's certainly a cool experience, but it's not something you can't wait until college for.
On topic, I found another friend who's really into AC. His favorite AC release is Spirit, which I think is really cool.

now that I think about it, the majority of my close friends seem to like AC and got to know their music without any influence from me. I got my best friend to like them by taking her to a show. another friend got into them when we listened to them on mushrooms.
other than that, playing Sung Tongs or Feels tends to do the trick. but ya can't win 'em all

I don't think AC is the kind of band you can push on people, especially if their taste in art and music is a little more traditional.
I do think that the best time to intro someone to AC is when their guard is down, so they can be a little more open and non-judgemental, and yes weed can be good for that. Weed can also help you dissect the layers of sound a little more too and help you get lost in the music, unless your friend is one of those dudes that freaks out on weed easily, then maybe not a splendid idea.
But I think you just have to venture slowly with your buds, like maybe play them some early Pink Floyd or Can and gauge their reactions. Then go with your best instincts from there. However if your friends starts to ridicule your taste in music and poke fun, then either a.)they're not a very conscientious friend or b.) they are confused by AC and have chosen to deal with it immaturely. So be prepared as that may happen.
I also find that a lot of musicians/producers/music aficionados tend to gravitate to AC, so someone without those reference points might just think its all random sounds and crazy hootenanny jams, so keep that in mind as well. There are exceptions of course as with everything I've said.
And let's face it! Sometimes your friends won't like things that you like, even something as awesome as AC (shocking I know!) and if that happens, don't break up with them and tell them you hate them, but say "that's cool, no worries mate" and go play frisbee outside, and while you may be saying to yourself "he has no idea what cool music he's missing" just remember you can always come on this board and nerd out with us over Dave's new bucket hat or when Deakin will finally release his album.
Basically, It's all good man, you are not alone

I agree completely. It really takes time to truly appreciate the music the make, from the lyrics to vocals and sounds all around, it's an experience rather than listening. I guess that's why I'm so hooked !

I found that getting people stoned and making them listen to Fall Be Kind was pretty good.
Thinking of how I get people to like AC through psychedelics and writing this down makes me feel like I'm the Army performing tests with LSD on soldiers.

seriously if you want to get your friends into Animal Collective, you might need to shrink them down "innerspace style" and then slip them in their food or something. good luck with that

so my friend Mikey likes Nikleback and I'm trying to get him to listen to Animal Collectivr but he won't do drugs so it's hard. He said he likes My Girl but I don't know if he means it. Should I tell him that animal collective are for older ppl so he'll try and be cool and then listen?

I wouldn't start anyone on prospect hummer though because it's my least favourite AC release out of their EP's and LP's.
I think it really depends on what they're into prior, i guess someone more folk inclined would be better off starting with Sung Tongs.

yeah, better immediately discard the release they did with an actual folk singer and choose an album with a five-minute wahwah pedal solo

Yeah but most of Sung Tongs isn't that weird, plus I'd argue that the songs are better (as Prospect Hummer is just b-sides from that album) and is a better representation/preparation for AC's other stuff.

el you gotta reconsider your impression of hummer! fantastic collection of songs no matter where they come from.

Just because songs on any EP or single are b-sides in technical terms, that doesn't automatically make them lesser quality...especially when talking about AC. Some of their greatest songs ever are "just b-sides." It just means they didn't make the album because they didn't fit in the best with the other songs or the idea they were going for as a whole, not because they're garbage.

Yeah i know that, some of my favourite AC songs are on EP's so i don't even know why i said that, its probably because i'm just not much of a fan of prospect hummer so it feels more like a collection of b-sides to me even though i know that's not true. I feel like i'm digging myself a hole here, cause i didn't really think through that last post too well haha

i think sung tongs exists in such a weird space because of that bridge between weird electronic experimentation and acoustic chillbros. the songs that i like the most are the (multi-tracked to death) acoustic ones (WCWAR, winters love, sweet road, mouth wooed her); the ones i consider "non-essential" are the ones that lean more towards electronic (kids on holiday is a decent song, but is the only AC track that absolutely fits better in another era for me—check it out as a feels jam). i understand that this is the narrative of the album; the palette just works for me much better when it's unprocessed or w/e.
this is also where you see panda really coming into his own as an AC songwriter i think, and PH has to be considered there (how to dive is maybe some of his best writing imo)

I also love Prospect Hummer. Pretty much the whole thing. And my mom liked the title track, which is more than I can say about most AC tracks.

i heard brothersport in a car while stoned and it was turned up all the way and that was how it clicked for me. i heard my girls and in the flowers in the alien workshop video from early 2009 and listened to MPP a few times but it wasnt till early 2011 that i heard it loud and stoned. and MPP is totally an album you have to turn way up.

I had a meeting with my boss today. He won't be my boss too much longer, (his wife is super sick with hyper-thyroidism-- she normally weighs between 140 and 150 -- she's down to 105--) because he's moving to a new department. So our meeting today was basically shooting the breeze, talking about life... you know. And he asked at a certain point, "Hey Tyler, what kind of music are you in to?" "Animal Collective!," I replied. "Interesting, what is that?" So we went to youtube. First I put on that badass Fireworks / Essplode live version, but I decided that was a bit somber, and I wanted something to lift the mood. So we went to The Creators Project Applesauce--- he LOVED it. After a minute he was rubbing his eyes, and he was like, "I feel like I'm tripping out here." After it was over he was talking to me about how he smoked pot in high school, and he totally goes back to it when he hears psychedelic music.... it was cool. He genuinely liked it, which surprised me a bit, because I've had mixed results introducing people to AC.

That's a great story zilla !
My thoughts and prayers go to your boss and family.
That was refreshing to hear though his first experience with Animal Collective. I mean, we all can relate I guess, so that's why were all here

The other day I played Spirit to two friends, one of them had a funny scared face all along but said he liked it at the end (though I don't believe him) and the other one seemed more interested in the music. I was also explaining the background of the album and the band and the songs, afterwards the one who seemed more interested showed me some old prog music that reminded him of Spirit, it was really cool. I guess he liked it. He's the only person I've successfully collaborated with since he knows how to jam, we recorded an hour long blues session and are thinking about making more "composed" stuff. I showed Feels to a friend at school, but he said it was way too calm. Should I try MPP/SJ? He's into more "normal" rock bands.

Feels? Calm? There are like what, 3 calm songs on that record, not counting the last third of turn into something.

Feels has a fair amount of ambient pop floatyness, I can only think of DYSTW, Grass, Purple Bottle and TIS as being upbeat rockers, the rest of the album is a lot of drifty soundscape type jams. When I first got into Feels those tracks I mentioned were the ones I really dug into the most and the rest grew on me.

the only way i really show Animal Collective to anyone is when i play music through speakers while i clean/play games/whatever. they sometimes tell me to turn it off or change the song, but sometimes i can tell they like it
