Smh. Glad they're still friends though. I think When You Left Me could possibly be a thematic centerpiece. I mean the album definitely has a lot of sadness, and breaking up with your beautiful significant other of so many years seems pretty rough. :negative:

How come this thread isn't huge btw? Is it just because there was so little time between announcement and freebird? PBVSGR was giant when that shit was rolling out and whatnot.

Panda played his songs live for over a year before the album and sonic was chatting and answering our questions about it. We had a lot of boot material before we heard the studio tracks so I think since this was relatively unknown (other than avey saying he had another albums worth during slasher flicks era) and never playing this stuff live, led to this thread not being as big until people got puzzles and then the inevitable freebird.

Really liking this so far, Ms. Secret might be my favourite, but it's hard to choose. I'm curious to see how I'll feel about this relative to Avey's other stuff once it's settled in, since Down There is one of my favourite albums.

If this was written back in 2014 I suppose this was the 'acoustic' album that avey wanted to put out in 2015 but noah convinced him to put it on hold

Also was curious if anyone has the source on this? Sounds familiar but I can't remember where I heard that before.

This isn't giving me the familiar Animal Collective feelings but it is giving me that long lost Animal Collective sensation of feeling my way through a new approach and new set of songs in all their abstractions, as my brain tries to sketch the broad strokes and familiarise itself with the structure and chords and melodies. It's one hell of a fucking feeling, I tell you. This gets better and better. PJ into In Pieces into Selection Of A Place is astonishing!

I was worried this wouldn't have staying power since it was so immediately gratifying, but the feelings just deepen and intensify with each listen and it still feels like there's a lot to unpack

For some reason this sounds more like a full band release than Avey solo, maybe because of the richness of the sound or all the collaborators

Also this selection of a place, especially the second half, reminds me a lot of the songs on Joanna Newsom's Have One on Me - just the inventive orchestration with a bit of that sighing country twang

Are you all enjoying this album with headphones or speakers?

I listened with headphones the first couple times through and loved the depth and subtle sounds, but it's really coming through in a great way on speakers as well.

this album is taking it's time to settle into my psyche. it's somehow very slow-moving and subtle. there is just so much here to comprehend and mellow out into.

Aveys vox on PJ reminds me of that old radio session the AC did covering Nirvana's Polly. Some of these are super textural too like Dr Aw one for J and Sports in July, just crackly fuzzy textures that ooze into memories of listening. The biggest standout I think is Boat Race, I just keep on coming back to that one. oh yea and can't forget about Ms. Secret, I love how country it sounds, lots of country vibes on this one!

Selection of a Place is awesome, that last section of it reminds me of Oddsac, like the intro to Mr. Fingers or something.

One major theme of the album seems to definitely be WATER.

the lyrics don't let down either. he put a lot of work into this,

so much to digest

It's taken a few listens but this album is getting its hooks on me now, diggin it. The intimacy is beautiful, reflective, is almost like a companion piece to Grim Reaper in a way, equally psychedic, flowing and cyclical, natural themes. MOTW really set this album up, these compositions are far more interesting that his PW contributions, which I don't really go back to... would have loved a little more Kang fleshing out some of the melodies but there's still quite a lot to digest here

Never mind, managed to get it from another source.

I'm enjoying the little that I've heard of it so far. I dug MOTW a good bit, and this feels like a more refined version of those pieces. Mainly it's just so good to hear Avey's artistic voice come out so purely again.

I didn't hear this at first but that is a spot on comparison, me thinks. California vibes all the way too.

Jeez. I love this music. I had a real moment the first time I heard it two nights ago. Similar to hearing AC's music for the first time again (it's been about ten years). I had eaten some baby Hawaiian woodrose seeds; the sounds were dancing around the room and messaging my thoughts, while the lyrics stirred them up. Little daisies of vocal melodies popping up and such.

I can hardly believe this exists, can't wait to get my record in the mail. By George I think he's done it again.

Listened to it maybe 4 times. The ones I keep coming back to are In Peices, Selection of a Place and Sports in July.

I haven't seen anyone mention Sports in July, I think the moment when Angel comes in at the beginning is one of the best moments on the album. Excited to get the lyrics when it comes out!

I'm about two listens in and absolutely loving this album. Like the best AnCo stuff, you can trace similar songs to this material throughout parts of their back catalogue, but so much of it feels wholly new.

If I can make a recommendation to people who haven't gotten into it, try listening to it during the day, in a sunny room while doing some relaxing. I know it's atmosphere and sadder lyrics sort of lend itself well to nighttime listening, but I really think a lot of the instrumentation really shines as a happier contrast to the lyrics and Avey's vocal delivery rather than an enhancement to the sadder aspects of the album.

For me, this will be a great lazy weekend album for at least a year.

HeeeellllllOOOOO(Dougie Cooper voice). Long time browser here and making my first post. Been lurkin since the old site pre-Tomboy days. Eucalypus's beauty has awoken me from my stupor to contribute to this amazing board! I'm really diggin Mrs. Secret, Selection of a Place, Roamer, and Coral Lords atm. The whole album is just wonderful. I do agree with people who said its reminisent of the back end of Sung Tongs. I'm getting the nature vibes of Good Lovin Outside, with space for it all to live and breath. Can't wait to get even more lost in its soundscapes while I'm at the beach week after next!

This could be a low key masterpiece. So so good. Feels very unlike any other AC record. Maybe the only thing it feels similar to is ODDSAC

Stray observations:

Love the 'bomb and debris falling' sounds in In Pieces.

"Not thinking about" in Selection of a Place = Weird Avey Yankovic.

Autoharp bit in Coral Lords is too much. But this is the only song not really working for me. Would love it if that bit happened again towards the end.

given it a few listens and it isn't really clicking for me yet

I like certain moments of certain songs but the only one that's really doing it for me as a whole at this point is ms secret

I'm sure it'll grow on me with more listens tho

I'm kinda embarrassed to say it but I really just wish these were the mothlight songs lol

I'm surprised I'm not digging it more considering I especially like the more acousticyy stuff like campfire songs, young prayer, sung tongs, motw, etc. but ah well I'm sure it'll grow on me

does anyone else get an MGMT type feel on some of these songs? In Pieces right now totally sounds very in the realm of later MGMT releases like their self-titled.

I've listened to the album maybe 20 times and only now does it feel like it makes sense. There's so much going on here. So many details to soak in. The entire record is gorgeous. I can't believe most of this was recorded in his home. The use of acoustic guitars is refreshing as well. We haven't heard music like this from the AC boys in a long time. Absolutely love this record.
