That would be
I should've specified, by deep cuts I really just meant any of the non singles from the record that are beasts in live settings (burglars, summing the wretch)

I looked up their Letterman appearance after MPP and it was 4 months after the album release, so I'm still holding out hope they'll do one of the late night shows. They're playing in NJ this May, so maybe they can make a quick detour.

If they had to do a single I wouldn't mind them doing Lying in the Grass, that one kills live. As long as they didn't do Floridada or Golden Gal I would be happy. I haven't been too crazy about Floridada during this tour, and the one redeeming aspect for me is the crowd energy since everyone knows the song (and the chorus), but that would be missing from a tv performance.

I really hope they do a late night performance though. does anyone know how far ahead of time are the musical guests usually announced for these things?

agreed. floridada seemed pretty lackluster on both kcrw and bbc6, I think it's too dense to be sung clearly in the live setting, and (this goes for golden gal too) the harmonies don't shine as brightly.

to clarify by too dense I mean they CAN both sing all the lines fine but their voices don't seem meld into one like they do in floridad on the album

for SJ they played #1 and for CHz they played Rosie Oh, I don't think them playing a single or the most accessible song is a given.

#1 was chosen because it was the only song that was short enough that they wouldn't have to cut any of the vocal parts of the song (thought they did shorten the intro). they also considered Derek bc it was short enough but they decided that #1 gave a better idea of the band's overall sound

Rosie Oh was chosen because Avey's voice was shot so he couldn't sing and they had to pick a Panda-sung track and NTB was too long. The other C Hz late-night performance was Today's Supernatural, which was a single

I'm not completely ruling out another song from PW but I think FloriDada or Golden Gal is the most likely, especially if the label has any influence over their song choice, although I honestly have no idea if they do

So we've had 2 months to live with this thing, Painting With… (apologies to those sick of hearing me gush about it over and over)

I love the sheer energy of this record. I love how they've ditched guitars entirely; these are the sounds of NOW! I love how intricate these songs are structured; dying to know more about the writing process… Did those fat OP-1 lines come first, or the vocal melodies, what? Panda's songs seemed lackluster at first but have grown into some of my favorites (Natural Selection, Spilling Guts particularly). Headbangers! Haven't seen much discussion about Sonny DiPerri's production, mixing decisions, etc. I love how "dry" Painting With is, and how groove-centric it is. It's like the bones of the songs have been pushed to the fore, so we're hearing the exoskeleton and all the gushy, squishy stuff we're accustomed to from the band is tucked away inside a bit. I love the contrast between the heavily synthesized and processed instruments on the record and the untouched vocals. I love how, although this is an electronic record, it still feels organic and performed.

What direction do you think the band will take next? I picture them going down this electronic rabbit-hole even further, but down-shifting a bit into looser, more expansive jams with Dave's Buchla taking on a bigger role. Don't see the guitar returning anytime soon; don't think they need it, or miss it.

yeah lying in the grass is what they should play on late night tv if they do play a show this era. It'd be cool if they hit up Colbert.

agreed, I love the way the trippy sound fx stuff weaves in and out of the bare-bones percussion and vocals. Album sounds amazing on good headphones

The vocals do not seem dry in my opinion. Sure, they're not smothered in reverb but they still have a spacey quality to my ears. The mix feels squishy and slimey (in the best way). Production is definitely on point. Cyber punk in Water World.

The production of the instrumentation definitely seems dry to me, at least in comparison to a lot of their albums in between 2005 to 2011, which frequently have a wet, reverby sound that evokes water. But the vocals are definitely more organic sounding though. To me, the production overall is most in common with Sung Tongs

ya I took like a 2 week break from PW and listened to a lot of it like twice today and it was fucking awesome. love this album soooooo much... Strawb and MPP have mega-potent nostalgia for me, but beyond that I like this just as much as my other favorite AC albums and its so much more playable than the old stuff cuz its, y'know, new. but ya it might as well be my favorite AC album.. (not that that rlly matters or anything)

but ya so fucking good. feels simultaneously futuristic/fresh while also having this song-writing at its core that feels rlly classic and like totally lives up to that tin-pan alley vibe they avey was talking about at the same time. felt like MPP was sorta like that (esp something like Summertime Clothes) but PW like doubles down on combining futuristic sounds and classically super tight songwriting... idk, like vertical isnt even one of my favorites, but the lyrics and ideas that it expresses kinda blow my mind in how layered they are...

also, like Golden Gal, On Delay and Burglars are like my faves (and Gnip) but I think Spilling Guts might actually be the most perfect thing for me here... its so fucking awesome.. just comes in with this awesome energy.. and something about Panda's vocals on that are so perfect. its simple but soooo effective for me... ugh. could gush forever.

My favorite thing about the album is how short and sweet the entire thing feels. The flow never lets up so it's over in a flash. Like a sugar rush. I'm always tempted to play it over immediately after finishing. Really cool the dudes went with that vibe. It's lit.

its soooooooo lit. never been a huge fan of that term, but if anything is lit its PW. this thing goes in. hard af in the paint, but not in an aggressive way, just like a self-assured master-class type way.

Something about the way they sing with the back and forth feels like a rap album. It clicked when listening to Hocus Pocus one day and I had this image of Dave and Noah in a luxurious rap music video just gushing with confidence... I would say confident is the best word to describe this record. I feel like after Grim Reaper and Slasher House, which were both very confident and accessible but not pandering, they've really brought that same feeling to this record.
Plus now with Sleep Cycle and Deakin feeling accomplished the whole group is really feeling themselves which is :D

yeah on the old board at some point. I can't remember exactly what he said. But people we asking him if AC would ever make a full album of "chill out music" and he was like, "yeah we would love to do that at some point but probably not any time soon" this was like 10 years ago

honestly we should give it the same weight as him responding on that recent ama with "yeah we might do another record like hcti if we feel like it"

as in, theyre probably not, but what he's saying is they'll do what they're in the mood to do

I remember seeing something in one of the recent interviews or AMAs where Brian said they had always talked about doing an entire album made of mainly just pianos, like three or four pianos being played at once with vocals and not much else. I would love to see some ambient piano record with Deak vocals

probably my favorite sonic style to ever come from the band. love the sheer brightness and sweetness of the sounds along with percussion. also both panda and avey have great vocals throughout the whole thing. so far it is definitely the most underrated album of 2016 for me.

The 'front-loaded' jibe has been leveled at a couple of their albums, hasn't it? At least I've seen it a fair bit. Never understood or agreed with it.

But Painting With is definitely front loaded for me. First time I've felt uncomfortable with something like hits in their discography. Think the very best it has to offer comes in the first five tracks. I don't usually throw around these kind of negatives, cos I absolutely leave track order to the artist's discretion, but the album would've worked sweeter for me if, for instance, Lying in the Grass was side B. A Summing the Wretch > LitG transmission would've been killer.

tho i think my biggest problem is i feel these tracks have crucial differences that need to highlighted rather than buried in similar production. idk if this really makes sense.

like all of the panda tracks are very similar to his pbvsgr tracks, where they are based on loops and beats in chunks (this is a good thing i think, i like this style of songwriting) so the production works. but the avey tracks are really song-y (like i'd love to hear an acoustic version of golden gal or on delay) actually, and i think if it the production was subdued or lessened or if the tracks themselves were longer, giving them room to breath and evolve, i think i'd enjoy this more. like on delay just kind of ends, which sucks, because it's a really well written and perfomed song up to that point! it should be the highlight of the album but it ends up being kind of a tease. same with the burglars, which doesn't need to be much longer, but i'd love for it to just continue for maybe a minute longer. these are jams! not a huge fan of golden gal or floridada ( which are kind of in the style of little fang).

Recycling is the only track where the whole thing really is perfect for me, and i also think it's the most unique and forward thinking song on here. it's like the whole technique was made for this song and melody. it's fucking beautiful. and they really fucking killed it with the synths and caveman beat. it's quickly become of the top ac tracks to me for sure

Pretty much agree with all of this except I really like floridada. Golden gal was amazing at first but I feel like it hasn't really aged that well. On delay definitely needs to be longer. I feel like having one 5 minute song wouldn't have hurt the "ramones album" concept. And recycling is definitely perfect, nothing short of genius having that as the closing track.
