I appreciate that the Paste review talks about Deakin's involvement in Mali and with TEMEDT and connecting the realities of slavery with some of Sleep Cycle's lyrics.
It's interesting that they talk about Shadow Mine relating to Distract 9. For me that song reminds me of footage I've seen of Muslims praying towards Mecca. It's a very foreign sounding song to me

Glad to see critics responding positively to this release and rightfully so!

Ok, sorry that my first post on this thread was snark. I'm digging this so much harder than I expected. Listened at least twice a day since it dropped and it's only getting better!

Pullhair was their Two Virgins equivalent. Not sure about Slasher House... Life with the Lions?? Maybe Slasher Flicks is Wings instead.

I am so in love with the line "Shiva, come home. I'm ready to play". Good House feels important to me. You took your time with this Josh, but it was really all worth it.

Deakin's reddit AMA is starting in 45 min (3 pm est) -> https://www.reddit.com/r/indieheads
just as a heads up for anyone who doesn't know how reddit works, the actual AMA thread won't be posted until right at 3pm. It will be posted in the /r/indieheads subreddit that I linked above. if you want to ask a question, I suggest you type it up ahead of time and post it right when the thread goes live, because the earlier questions have a better chance of getting answered. Also your question might not get answered unless it gets upvotes, so try and ask something that people want to upvote
Someone should ask him if he sings background vox on Safer lol

"after years of process and struggle, at what point did you sit back and say “the album is done”? can you describe that moment to us? i imagine it was truly wonderful."
his response:
Deakin wrote:
well... that was actually a predetermined thing in a weird way. a very close friend of mine challenged me to pick an end date in the fall. I chose january 1st. I think that as unnatural as that felt on one level... as much as everything in me wanted to come up with reasons why I had to keep working on it... or add another song... whatever... there was actually something very powerful in doing that for myself. and to be honest it took a couple of weeks after that date before I was able to sit back and really hear it for what it is and realize that it is exactly what I wanted and needed it to be. It's so easy to keep telling yourself something needs more work. but to let it be what it is and realize it has value as an intention even with whatever flaws you may find it... i think there is a lot of value there as part of the creative process.

That could be Avey's Minimoog Voyager (I talked to Angel at the Columbus show and she mentioned it was his). The knob layout looks the same.

Aww! I got caught up at work and couldn't get to the AMA in time!
I even had my question already written and ready to go, so if you are still watching this thread, Josh, and feel like answering ONE more I would love to hear the answer to this one:
I have read in interviews that you are a carpenter, and I was wondering if you still do it, what you like about carpentry, and if it parallels or inspires your musical process in any way. Also, do you have any pictures of your carpentry work? I would love to see your physical creations!
Thanks again for the awesome record!

Very stoked to see potential for a Sleep Cycle vinyl release. And more Deakin jams throughout the year? Hell yeah!

Massive hype? How? Also if you enjoy it why does it matter how many other people are enjoying it and/or if you are enjoying it less than them?
FWIW in the days since I posted, I've really really been connecting with the record. In that moment, and this moment now, I'm just curious for folks to talk about their experience with it because I'm curious to hear (a few days ago) how other people were encountering/enjoying and now I'm curious to hear if people are having similar experiences as I am.
Not really looking for validation on my opinions, but I see how the post could look that way in retrospect. As an side, how aces was Josh in the AMA? Y'all asked some really good questions and he answered so eagerly and completely. Seeing it now.

Lol
Why's Pitchfork stalling so hard, I've seen them post reviews before of albums that hadn't even been released yet. Or are they gonna take the ODDSAC route and just refuse to review it for whatever reason
