dude I know right? They never really said what he did though. Like they asked him to do a violin drone but then he found out the song was in F and he said fuck that. but all they say about what he ended up doing was, "we figured it out". so idk. I listened to it really closely and there is an amazing sound near the end I think is him but I can't say it's violin.

He usually plays Viola i believe .
I herd he did some electronic stuff on it ....
Think he brought a few hot pots as well as his stringed thing ....

IIRC there was an interview somewhere where they specified he did indeed play the viola but then they fucked around with it and effected it a bunch to make it sound less awkward

i love the chorus of this song so much more than the verses, the chorus is just so sinister and takes the song for such a dark turn that you don't really see anywhere else on the album, especially when u take the lyrics into account. i kind of wish the verses of this song were more like that.

i really dig how it moves so seamlessly imo between a sinister feeling and and a more chill motorik punk. kinda switches gear when he says "ancient motor revving up to keep it living on" and "feels like progress is a product of a hidden game". that and "sneaky ways" are often stuck in my head

u know that is a good point and i appreciate the song more when looking at it from this perspective

Sometimes when I'm at work or doing something around the house, I'll find myself just randomly singing "Sneakyyyy wayyy ay ayyyssss." Totally out of context and just that line. Super infectious.

Natural Selection was the track that clicked last for me. The melodies kept popping into my brain and I was able to hear the song in a different way. The live version is like AC punk.

I get more dance, like almost techno vibes from natural selection but you know what's weird about you mentioning AC punk lol most people on here might hate me for this but for some reason the verses on summing the wretch remind me of blink 182 lol and then, like I've seen other people mention, the end is like this crazy mariachi thing which is awesome. That instrumental part in the middle is dope af too.

tier 1- on delay, spilling guts and burglars
tier 2- summing the wretch, natural selection, bagels, recycling
tier 3- fldada, hocus pocus, vertical, litg, golden gal

for me currently... singles suffer from slight single-ness or im just kind of sick of them since they came out first... very confident in my top 3... love floridada, vertical and bagels but OD and burglars seem like best avey on this.... and i just have a soft spot for spilling guts... of all pandas songs that one is the only one to get all the way thru to me and its sooooo sweet. i mean i like all of his but that stands out

golden gal is simply the strongest song on the album to me. it's the most thought-out to my ears

it also sounds like it would have meshed really well with chz. it sounds like they might have written it while in the same mindset? i can picture noah's drumming from the chz days fitting in well

interesting you say that because to me golden gal sounds the most contrived

hehe, I mean, I did keep doing DXM to try to get this album to freebird faster because it worked with MBV and CHz.

So I have a question that I don't know if we have an answer to... So we know the guys wrote all the lyrics/vocal parts for both people in their respective songs but do we know who wrote the vocal melodies? I'm especially curious for Avey's songs. Panda has some of his best vocal melodies in Avey's songs, especially On Delay, and I was wondering if Avey wrote the vocal melodies that way and got Panda to sing them like that or if he just wrote the lyrics and told Panda where he wanted him to sing them and then let Panda come up with his own vocal melodies. Cuz it seems like Avey gave Panda a lot of room to shine in his songs which is really cool.

Also I'm not saying panda didn't do this for avey, I'm guessing they were both really excited about doing the hocketing and I think it sounds great, I'm just specifically talking about avey writing for panda here.

^from that interview it sounds to me like they wrote the melodies for each other too, not just the lyrics.

I think the way they wrote the songs, they had to have all the vocal rhythms and melodies planned out from the beginning, since the two parts work together as one.

Wow, been thinking the exact same thing about Summing the Wretch and Spilling Guts in relation to Pop punk and Blink 182!
A Panda Punk album would be awesome :)

I concur! Except swap out Recycling for Summing the Wretch, for me. Man, after seeing these songs live I'm just stunned at what AC has created with Painting With. These songs just keep getting better with every listen. And I have to disagree with what has been said about this NOT being a record, like MPP, that will spawn a new generation of bands with a similar sound. I think AC is so far ahead of the game with this one that only down the road will we see how much of an influence it had on modern pop music.

Or perhaps it's just me. But I feel like this record is a paradigm shift in how I listen to music, what I appreciate in music, etc. Honestly kind of like a psychedelic experience. A rewiring. Confusion at first followed by new understanding and awe. It's like the music of dreams, the stuff you can't quite grasp, can't quite place. Yet here it is somehow.
Spoiler: show
Natural Selection didn't hit me until I saw it performed live. Same with Hocus Pocus. I just discovered the subtle background vocals in Vertical that are so low in the mix (down below me working steady, nice and breezy spirits easy)… what a trip. The reworking of Bees, Loch Raven, etc into the new set of jams has helped me contextualize Painting With into the history of the band. It makes total sense now. Yet what a surprise. What a leap.
I'm convinced Painting With, in time, will be regarded as one of their best records to date. It is at the very top for me today.

Heh, wow, I thought those lines were that gurgling synth noise a la the Bigfoot bit at the start of Reverend Green. Heavily effected. Cos I couldn't hear them at all before.

pretty crazy to me that people say that there are no emotions to these songs. bagels, on delay, golden gal and recycling are all very emotional sounding and earnest. I mean they aren't relationship love based like the songs on feels but this album isn't called feels 2, ya feel me my fellow ranchers??
