they probably just have some of the 7" for approving the physical product and the release copies won't come through until march.

Yeah I can see what you mean for sure. Instrumentally this LP is quite minimalist. There's lots of buzzes and clicks and whomps but not a huge amount else. It feels stripped back, with the vocals providing most of the character for each track.

so this is for sure tied with my favorite ac albums (sj, mpp, kinda chz). only way those are better is via the nostalgia i have for them built up over time, but i cant listen to their older stuff all that often anyway... this is still sounding really fresh and awesome. dig it so much... the center of it is my favorite which is sweet cuz chz has a somewhat weaker middle imo...

burglars, ns, bagels, on delay, spilling.... might be my favorite run in an ac album since mpp or sj prbly

This album would've had the most boring (read: accurate) bootleg titles ever. I'm sure the guys realised this and decided to record the album first for this reason alone.

1. FloriDada
2. Hocus Pocus
3. Vertical
4. Snots
5. Watch Out The Burglars (oh fuck!)
6. Sneaky Ways
7. Bagels for Everyone
8. On Delay
9. Spilling Guts
10. Guys Eyes 2: Electric Boogaloo
11. dunno, can't think of a title for this one

definitely a favourite atm. Very varied and the thumping beat is wicked!

Yeah, Hocus Pocus is a stunner. Almost prog-like in the way the vocals and instrumentation interweave, reminds me of Gentle Giant.

I liked this album from the first listen but it has really grown on me. Very consistent in terms of song quality, extremely easy to listen to front and back, and full of their signature sonic detail and surprise. No, it's not necessarily a "feels" based album but it's not like any of the songs are totally devoid of emotional content or relatability. And the second half of The Burglars, middle section in Bagels and certain moments in On Delay and Recycling definitely bring the feels. Even something like Summing the Wretch has a kind of subtle resonance in certain parts, underpinning the superficial wackiness.

I think these songs show a good deal of maturity and confidence in terms of musicianship and technique, and it's just an entertaining, breezy, but not "un-challenging" listen. Perfect for working out (if you're kind of a crazy person). Yeah, perhaps Panda should have limited the hocketing technique to a few less songs to preserve the novelty, and the high-octane, dense (but not overcrowded) approach may make some yearn for their more free-form ambient days, but this is about as good as I was expecting from them at this point in their career and has definitely stood up to repeat listens.

I don't necessarily see why this is so much worse than, say, Strawberry Jam. That album had higher highs (Fireworks, For Reverend Green, Cuckoo Cuckoo), and the 06-07 era was perhaps the peak of their raw creativity and musical alchemy, but Painting With is just as, if not more, consistent and musically accomplished. Painting With stands up to anything else in their canon, it just doesn't really capture the zeitgeist at all. And that's OK with me.

Hocus Pocus kind of washed over me at first and slowly became one of my favorites. When I jam this in the car, Hocus Pocus is usually my first choice.

someone mentioned that hearing panda's songs live made them better for them - I agree after watching some youtube videos of natural selection, etc.

just listening to meet the light child - Animal Collective were doing this 'hocketing' business way back in 2000, bros. or something very similar. 7.47 onwards. also the next song, runnin the round ball, bangs just as hard as alot of the tracks on painting with, for sure. started singing the verse lyrics of lying in the grass over it, fits pretty well heh

Gotta agree that Hocus Pocus is a huge grower. It was my least favorite on the first couple listens but man does it sneak up on you. Second favorite panda song after Recycling and I think they're both quite a bit better than the others of his with the hocketing thing, which is kinda samey even though they're some quality songs, the weird part is recycling does it so well it like makes it all make more sense as an artistic choice and makes them feel less samey somehow, again though it's waaaay better than the other ones that use it imo. Realizing I don't think I've posted about this album on here yet lol. Long time lurker (pre mpp) but yeah dunno why I haven't. Prob kind of telling of the fact that it didn't blow me away honestly. It's really good but one of their weaker albums for me. On the same level as chz to me, both sitting towards the bottom of the discography even though they're still awesome af. Don't really feel like going too in depth rn but it's a really fun album and honestly as much as I would love a dark and chaotic album from them with a lot more emotion, this turned out to be possibly life saving even though it didn't blow me away as an entire album next to their others. Floridada was a drop of pure delirious happiness for awhile (I've become a bit numb to it now sadly) when I really needed it and then the album dropped less than a week after some very serious heartbreak and On Delay in particular was life affirming. Favorites are it, Recycling, The Burglars. Can someone clear up who wrote bagels and golden gal? I've read them both being avey penned songs but bagels has panda on "lead" vocals and I read in one interview where he said he wrote golden gal??

Word, I thought so. Dunno if I misread that about panda saying he wrote golden gal or what.

Also wanna say the last two thirds or so of Burglars is some crazy shit I wish there was way more of that really amazing sincere, manic energy that's really only on burglars and Floridada. My two favorites I like for very different reasons though so it's cool. It just would have been dope to have more of those batshit songs over, say, spilling guts and natural selection. they're both good but belonged on an ep or single imo and I think that's a pretty common thought that pandas songs brought the album down a bit in terms of lack of variety. Another question, I read somewhere that the vinyl came with official lyrics?? If that's true that's kinda fucked up because I got the cd and didn't get lyrics, which I'd much rather have than the stickers. Not really worried about that though mainly wondering if the lyrics on like lyrical collective would be official. I swear I read somebody on here talking about the vinyl coming with lyrics though.

Weird
Also, for the record, I don't dislike pandas songs with the hocketing but I think if it had been used much less and some of the more exciting directions (burglars, on delay) had been explored more it could have been an amazing album but I've learned from mpp and chz that what ifs are pretty detrimental so at the end of the day it's a really cool, fun album but not one of my favorites of theirs at all I don't think.

Anyone else think the chorus of natural selection is way cooler / better than the verses? the production during the chorus is wonderfully ravey, but the verses sound hokey to me

I believe the lyrics that were added to lyricalcollective were transcribed by a journalist/someone with access to the official lyrics being provided by AC for promotional stuff. Perhaps they were provided in the event editors/reviewers etc want to include specific (and accurate) references to lyrics in their piece.

The Burglars was the first I immediately devoured the lyrics of, and only the final verse by Dave is one I haven't mastered yet. I always default to singing Noah's part as a safe haven.
