I love you Deakin, thank you so much for this album and for totally coming through with everything you promised.

Here's a solid article from pitchfork about the process
http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1091-why- ... l_facebook

Edit: Fuck that's a good article. Everyone should read that haha

I've been feeling pretty jaded and bitter against pitchfork over the last year, especially given that the new website design sucks, but I do have to give them props for that interview. They asked good, fair questions and Josh gave some really insightful answers on the process. I'm glad that his solo music is getting decent positive exposure now

yeah, I think it's cool that they gave him a platform to give the final word on the kickstarter and the recording process. Not that Josh owed us an explanation or anything, I know he's talked about this stuff before, but I hope it puts to rest any questions about why the album took as long as it did

and ya, I'm not surprised that he felt the weight of his v highly acclaimed and hyped band on his shoulders when working on this album. It's gotta be really hard not to compare ur work as a musician to other music you've worked on and are proud of. I'm really happy to see the album out now because like each other member's solo releases, it adds so much to the extended AC discog

my life is so much better with this album. I woke up, climbed down my ladder and put on Golden Chords, went to the bathroom with GC playing very loud and I (happily) cried. I think that's a pretty decent start of the day.

For the first several listens I always expected Just Am to end about half through, partly because Painting With and other recent Animal Collective releases has trained me to expect shorter, more concise AC songs. Then the second half drops in and my expectations are shattered.

I really like that this release is built around 4 long, meaty songs. This analogy doesn't make much sense, but it's like having 4 twenties in your wallet plus 2 extra fives. That's $90 right there.
That's some good shit

Don't know how noticeable it is in the studio version, but Deakin was definitely doing some weird vocal stuff during the early live versions.

After relistening to that though I guess it isn't super similar to the sound in shadowmine, but overall he's def really good at making textures with vocal fx.

Does Deakin sing the low bits at the end of Did You See the Words? There are three parts and two of them are obviously Avey and Panda but the lowest one sounds like Deak

I've never been to the US sorry Vilent, I think someone tricked you by pretending to be me :| someone else from CA I guess. Or just a funny coincidence. Hash is short for Hashman though, yes. I've been posting as Hashman on CA since August 2008.

I totally agree with what you guys were saying about Josh being so upfront with his words and emotions here on the Forum, it's such a rare thing and I think we really blessed to have someone is honest and down-to-earth as him come and talk to us like that. Love you animals!

Great article!

It's pretty clear to me that Deakin was pretty unsure of himself making this and putting it out. I hope he's able to wrap his head around the almost universally positive reaction the album's received, and becomes more prolific.

Damn, I could say that about literally every song in that cassette (yes, even the freebirds from the Mali concert).

Also as an aside, I really hope Josh recorded more of that concert, because the two songs on the freebird are absolute supahotfire and I bet all the other bands in FaD were even more on point.

I like how the last Deakin post here is part of an exchange about a Big Lebowski reference/meme

Now I'm just imagining Deakin posting that meme in his post instead of writing it lol

I didn't mean it that way, I just have not been in the mindset of some of the music that has been put out lately by them, and I wanted to emphasize that this really pulled me back in. But yeah I read his Lebowski quote on the other page so I guess that sounds kind of shitty. But again I was only trying to drive home how much I like this. When that piano kicked in on Just Am for the first time, I knew I was listening to something magical.

there was nothing wrong in what you said, and referring to PW and AC in general is completely fine and should not be seen as a crime or anything.

this album naturally can't be left out of the context of AC. Since some people were a little bit disappointed by the lack of magic (I know) PW (and all of the releases since ODDSAC) had, hearing this in a way confirmed that feeling by showing that there could still be music made from these guys that moves us in the way (or with the same force) they did a few years ago (wich at the same time confirmed that we can still be moved by new music (like we did a few years ago) ) . I think it's easy to understand this is a important and natural response.

this album just feels so honest and heartfelt, it gives me a feeling of awe, curiosity and love. it inspires me to make more music and take langer walks in the forest, I just feel more connected.

this album makes me wish many more AC band releases had featured his voice

i think Deakin's voice could find its place in the traditional combo of panda and aveys, and work with them equally in future projects

just am, golden chords, and good house are epic tracks and they inspire me as i have too had the floods and family traumas of 2014, and difficulty of getting up to work/play with faith in self and love. thanks for this album deakin and cant wait to see what comes next :>

Really hoping the next AC release is stripped and minimal because I think all the dudes voices work so well in that zone. See the Wide Eyed acoustic version, Tropic of Cancer, No More Runnin', etc. A softer, gentle record. Would really be a breath of fresh air from the maximalism of CHz and PW. Plus, it would give Geo's sample work a chance to break through the sonics a bit more.

Would love to hear Deaks and Panda harmonize with each other.
