Not enough people talking about the majestic beauty that is Just Am. Thought I was floating last night in my head when this jam hit. Perfection!
Also, Josh man... the transitions and sample work is incredible! Really elevates the songs to a magical place. The flow of the record feels so natural. This is a piece of art!
I've labelled the two bonus songs as Live in Tomboctou in iTunes because they feel separate from the studio tracks. Used the picture that someone uploaded from a previous email as the album artwork as well. So we kind of have two EPs from this project already. Amazing!

is it not clear to you guys that those bonus tracks are not me? concerned that this freebird has people thinking those are me. which seems crazy to me? but hard to decipher through the garbled insanity that is the internet.

sorry
I think Rampface gets that it's not you
I hope other people aren't mistaken
it is very obvious
I just listened to the cassette again at my moms place, I don't have a player at my apartment but now I really want one.

I thought it was pretty obvious those bonus tracks were African bands. Deakin, did you personally record those Super Khoumeissa and Khaira Arby songs when you were on your Mali trip?
Also any particular groups or albums that you found influential when you were making Sleep Cycle?

Don't fret, buddy. I'm certain any misunderstandings will be ironed out in the coming days.
Sit back and relax, enjoy the hysteria. People are really happy about this, no need for concern.

yes I made the recordings of super Khoimessa and Khaira Arby. just straight stereo field recordings. did a little nuancing with the stereo files to get them to punch a bit more. but that is what they sounded like. amazing band. not even sure what their status is. members of that band are in a band called Super Onze and they have records out. as does Khaira who along with her band is amazing as well.

it's been hard not to want to see what the reaction is. have to say I am generally really grateful for a lot of positivity and good feelings. this music means a lot to me.
but i also just have to say that I am still somewhat horrified by the way people talk. not so much here. you guys all seem to really try and keep it real. 4chan tho?... I'm so glad that people seem to be reacting well to it. those threads all seem to be mostly full of people who like it. and some who don't but that's ok. can't please everyone. but why oh why does there need to be such darkness in the way people express these things? i thought it felt bad to be the butt of a negative meme. but seeing something I made out of love make people say really brutal and awful things about three of the most important people in my life.... and to say those things BECAUSE they like my music? it's really baffling to me and I want to say thank you to you guys for working to be conscious about how you communicate with each other. I'm sure it get's out of hand sometimes here too but it's worth noting that the quality of communication here is not about... whatever that is I am seeing...
peace.

yeah... I'm not personally bummed about anything I saw there. I was just kind of mindblown about the way that people communicate and what they think is ok.

This comment speaks to me on many levels. 4chan is truly, like you said, a horrifying place. Best to stay away from that there no matter who you are.
The album is wonderful though. Thanks a lot man.

I hadn't heard the bootlegs, I didn't expect this to rip so hard when it did, like on Footy, damn. I really wish I had something more substantial to say but yeah this is just great.

This post has been captured and posted on 4chan. It's good that they're realising that what they're saying about the other three AnCo members is hurtful, even if it's in jest. I wouldn't want people saying that stuff about my friends...

It's a large congregation of people posting anonymously. You'll see the worst of humanity in places like that. Some of it's real hatred and some of it's just people going along with 'the joke'. Either way, it sucks. I avoid places like that. Leave them to it

The things that happen when people are given a veil of full anonymity are simultaneously amazing, horrifying and fascinating. 4chan has always been and will always be a bizarre place where you can see the ugly underbelly of many people's personalities. i honestly think it's one of the most important websites on the internet, but also one of the most volatile.
I feel like the vast majority of people making jokes / memes all these years about you honestly love all the music you've made. the kickstarter stuff is just an easy target. the hype and support surrounding this new album (or EP? which do you prefer?) is all positive, despite the joking.
but yeah. 4chan. weird place.

This is reassuring! Anonymity brings out the worst in people because their actions have no consequences. When they see those consequences, their true colours show. The colours shown right here are overwhelmingly positive.

for sure.... fully agree with demon and tropic. I get that very little of that was actually meant to be negative. and I am honestly not down about it. I just don't do much of this and so it's initially shocking. and I don't relate. but there are a lot of things that I don't relate to that may have value. and it's nice to see that maybe saying something on my end had an impact there. I'm not even really judging. if that's fun for some people than who am I to say it isn't. thanks for listening tho. and I certainly would love it if anyone was impacted by this conversation to think more about what the value and impact and purpose of their communication is.

I certainly am tbh. And thank you for being so wise and understanding about all this, Josh! I sent and Instagram message to you last month about this precise topic and I was really glad to have your reply.
I can't wait to purchase the EP! I've heard overwhelmingly positive things about it, and I think it'll live up to the hype! On which digital platforms are you releasing it? Bandcamp? iTunes? Spotify?

You are the man Deakin! It's truly a privilege having you on this board. Personally, this is the only Internet forum of any kind that I post to/spend time on. And that's because it's mostly free of the senseless trash talking that goes on in most forums. Good for you for speaking up!

One of my favourite things about this release is that there's a distinctive melodic style to the songwriting, a kind of wandering, lingering, exploratory quality to the vocals, searching for the final note. I really love it, and love how the vocals surge and soar and settle and still. It's really identifiably 'Deakin' in that I don't recall anything quite Iike it, vocally. I also really really love the guitar and hope that AC will experiment a bit more with guitars again in future. Can I say that some of the guitar tones and drum machine (?) remind me of The Durutti Column? I don't mean that it's derivative, just that there's a beauty and sense of place to it. So much atmosphere in these little worlds.

Josh, you may or may not read this, but I have to post knowing that you just might.
Golden Chords is the most beautifully delicate song I've heard in years. Thank you so much for this project. I wasn't a backer, but I will be supporting you in every possible way I can when this and any other material officially releases.
I love the length of this album, it compliments the listening experience perfectly. Such a fascinating piece of work you've put out. I'm instantly hooked, though I know I'll spend hours listening and dissecting each song here.
I also would love to see you tour. I'm in Vancouver BC, but would eagerly travel for a Seattle/Portland/San Francisco show if you can't make it up here.

Oh man! I cannot wait to listen! Really excited even though I couldn't afford the kickstarter when it was going on. I will totes buy the digital version ASAP. I got the KEEP shoes though, still wondering what the surprise with that will be! (Regardless, I think the shoes are dope)
Thanks so much for the tunes Deakin! I cannot wait to support the release now that I do have money. I really hope I can see the videos and the book as well even though I wasn't an original supporter.
I also will second the notion that 4chan is the worst and anytime you can be anonymous on the internet it always brings out the worst in (certain) people. The comments I have read on YouTube and 4chan about AnCo and my other favorite artists makes me sick and I have even seen some questionable stuff on my own YouTube page of my own work that has caused so much unnecessary stress/anxiety. The solution I have found is to quote a lyric from one of my favorite bands: "You got to slide it off like mercury"
