First impressions: Dave's song great, Noah's shite, just like on Painting With. Noah's songwriting with this album seems to be 'start with a prescribed set of rules and absolutely rinse every permutation and then just send Dave the mp3s'. Some of it is good but most sounds like he's going through the motions. This is painting by numbers.

Someone has the studio version? I'd love to hear them if someone could PM them to me. Unless it's the iPhone recording I've been hearing about.

all of noah's pw era songs sound so lazy to me, which is so disappointing, because his songs were often my favorites on past records

come on stan (and demonclusters), have NONE of noah's songs on PW grown on you? Hocus Pocus is really varied, Natural Selection is super clubby, Spilling Guts hits really hard, recycling is just gorgeous! I personally find LitG really catchy too but I get that it's not for everyone
I really like Spilling Guts, maybe my favourite off the album. I really like Hocus Pocus. The rest have flickered and faded fast.

Still waiting on that PM...
I don't have much to add to the thread but I will say that based on the live stuff I've heard I prefer Hounds over Gnip Gnop by a very large margin, and this is coming from someone who didn't really enjoy Panda's tracks from PW (or at least as much as Avey's).

We have the same opinion. I find spilling guts getting stuck in my head daily, and hocus pocus is a neat song. but recycling i just find entirely boring, natural selection is borderline embarrassing...

i also think Spilling Guts is tops and pocus is a little behind it and the other Noah stuff is a little tougher yeah...
this is a pretty sick 7" overall. is it me or does it feel like the vocals are a certain way on both of these, production-wise? just as much clarity as the LP but it feels imbued with a kind of extra calm

what's so embarrassing about natural selection? i like it a lot, it grooves pretty hard.

I agree with stan and demonclusters here.
This era has been Dave writing a few songs that stack up really well against the AnCo canon (Golden Gal is one of my personal all time favorites and the burglars is absolutely wonderful) but noah's tracks feel really manufactured to me, if that makes sense. Painting by numbers like stan said.
That said, Hocus Pocus is cool just because of how it sets up vertical

for me, it's the way he sings. it feels unnatural, ironically, and just like he's going through the motions of songwriting instead of focusing on writing a good song. the lyrics feel contrived too. yes, it's fun live, and easy to dance hard to, but that doesn't really make it good when im just listening to the album
Sorry to invade this thread with discussion on the album as a whole. gnip gnop is pretty fun

...spoilers? I think? Theyre still touring right lol
And actually, I think "Gnip Gnop" might be a reference to a game. It was an early 70s game where you have 3 ping pong balls on your side and 3 on the other, and each player has to push levers to get them to go through holes in a wall between them. whoever ends up with all the balls on their side loses. Fun game, I had it as a kid. It seems like them to reference something like this

that makes more sense than my almost conspiracy level theory. Good post pal
