how is vocal interplay that is somewhat disorienting on early listens different from abrasive electronics, high frequencies, hyper-dense textures etc showing up all over their discog
not calling out anyone specifically, and not directed at ewoks comment, but feel like the ppl i see not getting into he album have really old people-type complaints like they forgot how ac works or something. keep seeing weirdly cliche complaints abt it as though the ppl arent aware of the nature of ac or how interesting pop music works. like forget that whole "its not for everyone and thats OK" mentality. its not ok.
sometimes a song with have a super amazing melody - Verticle for example - i love how the vocoder part leads into the first melody its super memorable
but then it goes into that gross maximal chorus and then i lose all interest in the song
same with Bagels in Kiev, melody is super weird and interesting and creative but then it goes to that little 'tra la la' synth melody and im so over it
theres actually too much melody all over this !
Kinda want AC to make something a bit darker and moodier in the future.
and please bring back the delay and reverb. Those are two things that they actually know how to do. I like that shit!
I think it's too much for the whole album to be that way. I wouldn't have been able to listen to pbvsgr if every song was like boys latin. Not saying painting with's vocals are exactly like boys latin but my point stands... trading off all the words is just kind of hard to listen to
It's a completely different listening experience...it's like putting together a puzzle in my mind...and it's SO much fun trying to sing along to both parts at once.

lol, we are complete opposites. I like the melodies and rhythm (that's what I love about ac), and I'm pretty over reverb and delay (I feel like it's just a crutch to cover seams).
blah blah blah. it aint even the whole album. there aren't single-syllable vocal tradeoffs on any of the avey songs and thats half the album.
Yeah I feel like because of this Dave utilized Noah better in his songs than Noah utilized Dave.
yeah i agree with you there. i do prefer the avey songs on this album, and i feel the selection of dave's songs on this album are more diverse than noahs. i don't dislike noah's songs, but i feel like the two of them sound more cohesive together on avey's songs.

horrible opinions in first post wow smh. too much melody lol
sorry kidding, and if im honest, the chorus on vertical didn't wow me much compared to the verse for a while.... live version of vertical kinda helped. maximal? eh, they keep things pretty reined in on this whole thing. it is pretty wonky tho...
and cant see how ppl muss reverb... the sound and feeling of this album is so energetic and kind of visceral, love hearing the sharpness and richness of things... def still all blends together tho somehow
If any of you own Finding Nemo, I suggest watching it while listening to PW in headphones. Seriously, I can't imagine the record now with those images.
Lying in the Grass is my jams today. Ahhhh this album is amazing! Top tier AC
Got the record today (Panda!), it says "Comes with mp3s" on the shrink-wrap, but I can't seem to find any sort of card with website/code or whatever. Any ideas?
who knows, maybe hocketing will become super popular and by their next release it won't be on any of their songs and people will be like 'fuck this, bring back the vocal trade offs. they did that well. I like that shit!'
mate, i reckon if you're missing the delay and reverb, go listen to MPP, it's been done!
i'd be super interested to hear how this album would be received without any knowledge of the band's past releases. like, would it be more positive maybe?
i feel like so much of people's opinions on this thing are based on how they feel about AC's old albums. impossible to oversee at this stage in their music making lives obviously, but in my view slightly unfair and limiting...
and ya know, honestly, i get it. this is the band that dropped my fave album of nature pop bangers with the trippy green leaf cover art that my best friends and i listened to on a road trip to byron bay on repeat- nothing can replace those *feels*!
my adolesence is almost gone and perhaps alot of the people here are also moving out of that stage and yeah nothing will be the same but this album totally deserves to stand on it's own. treasure your memories, but they don't need to be recreated, right?? and i don't mean to offend but i TOTALLY think expecting the same thing over and over from a band is lame, yeah you've heard this before.
maybe it's time for another band to step in and make MPP or Feels Part 2. it was such a loved vibe, huh!

while i think that would be awesome, i also think no other band could do it
Lots of bands have emulated both of those albums, and some have actually done it really well!
e.g. Alvin Band's Rainbow Road for MPP and Braids' Native Speaker for Feels
Not exactly the same, but definitely similar vibes. If AC aren't going to go back to those sounds I think it's totally fair for other bands to try and make it their own
I've been wondering a lot how PW would have been received if it swapped places with MPP. Probably a lot better, I think it's just as good as that album. It's just not what people seem to be looking for these days
I think the pacing of PW is slightly off (floridada to hocus pocus makes no sense to me, and STW to golden gal?). The album flows really well in this order:
1 hocus pocus
2 golden gal
3 floridada
4 lying in the grass
5 on delay
6 summing the wretch
7 bagels
8 recycling
9 spilling guts
10 vertical
11 natural selection
12 the burglars
Leading with these five songs sets a better tone, then I have bagels and recycling together to slow things down, then SPILLINGUTSPILLINGUTS, and finally a grand finale with burglars.
Nah Burglars as closer is like Winter Wonder Land as closer to SJ, Slippi as the closer to HCTI, Guys Eyes as the closer to MPP, We Tigers as closer to ST. You cannae do it captain'. Recycling is a perfect closer to this bitch anyhow
I haven't really understood the Bagels/On Delay to Fireworks/Reverend comparison either to be honest. Don't see how those songs pair up at all really, or act as the foil for one another, or whatever. Be that sonically, thematically, whatever. I think a more appropriate analogue of that is Hocus Pocus and Vertical, if anything.
i'd be super interested to hear how this album would be received without any knowledge of the band's past releases. like, would it be more positive maybe?
No bullshit, this album got my mom into Animal Collective. I showed it to her and she loved it after a couple listens, she then went on to MPP, then Campfire Songs!! After that I made her a playlist on spotify that encompassed albums from their whole career (minus Danse, HCTI, and Hollinndagain) and she loved it. Thanks AC for bringin the fam closer together!
Ah c'mon, Native Speaker doesn't sound much like Feels.
i think the point was albums heavily influenced by another album. native speaker was absolutely influenced by feels
Yes, for sure. But I would say it shares similarities with SJ and MPP too.
I actually missed the line after that where he said they weren't exactly the same though. I saw the word emulated and pounced, my bad.
I guess an interesting or perhaps shit question to ask is this: how would this album have been received in place of CHz?
Right off the bat it's gonna be seen as AC going even poppier. Could imagine people claiming they're selling out with FloriDada. Fans desert. But swathes of new ones take their place. AC go on a world tour, selling out arenas. Hocketing kills it. Everyone's hocketing, Bieber's hocketing. Vaporwave never comes into existence. The boys return in 2016 with Centipede Hertz (meanwhile Greaper era happened w/ the Crosswords intro intact, Avey Tare's Slasher Flicks sells out numerous Broadway shows). Kendrick Lamar features on the track Mercury Man. All the old fans coming back because AC are returning to their more chaotic, percussive roots. Pulleys is fucking forty minutes long on the LP. Stanshant posts something or other about his semen. Pitchfork 10.0. Deakin album drops, is huge. Some genre that doesn't exist yet. Geologist announces a scat album. World peace.
