LitG was like my least favorite track on PW, but I'm really digging how it sounds live and with the energy given to it.

It’s definitely something we’ve thought about. I do love video games. I think where the quality of that sound comes from is this little OP-1 synthesiser I have, which is responsible for most of the bass sounds on the record. It’s got real cutting electronic sounds.

how could anyone think that the band wanted to make people feel the same way spirit or sung tongs or feels made them feel when they listen to this record? ingenue's post is spot on and i hope people take something from it. this record is wonderful, emotive, personal, powerful, fun, loopy, hectic, pristine; genuinely great. it's also at least ten years removed from any of those records. anyway, if this record makes you feel a way unlike any of their other albums, why would you not consider that a good thing? isn't that what being a fan of this band is all about? it's a lot easier than people think to find something you like about any work of art. being so dismissive of this record is something i didn't think posters on this forum would do. and i dont mean to throw anyone under the bus or critique anyone's experience of this band or record, but i think that down the road a lot of ppl will regard their initial attitudes toward this record as silly. beating a dead horse i know, but a lot of people just need to get their feelings out there, me included, and i am glad to know that discussion of this album on this forum has been predominantly positive and constructive. its not bad to have a dissenting opinion, and i dont want to silence any of those dissenting opinions. any perspective is a valuable one. but i just think this album has a ton to offer, especially to fans. love all of u, no exceptions, and i'm so grateful for this website and this band. love n peace

went to dc for the weekend (it was beautiful out, like mid 60s and sunny on saturday) and walked/biked around with painting with in my ears and every track seemed to work really well in that listening environment. summing the wretch, spilling guts, and natural selection have really grown on me and somehow veritcal has gotten even better with time. love this album so much!

I'm expecting mine today also. The shipping label was created on the 13th so I don't know why it took so long to get from MI to CA. I also cannot believe they are sending out the 7' out separately. I thought that was the main point for the deluxe package.

Not to derail, but what IS a good brand. I have a Crossley that I bought because it had a tape deck too (which was semi-rare when I first bought it, but pretty common now), but I'm looking for something else.

Also, to keep this on topic...I haven't heard

starting to feel like i really underrated this
takes multiple multiple listens to kinda 'accept' the bombast and stuff it into the background so you can notice there are some well written songs behind it

Mine came in the mail today too (Toronto here)

Listened to Side A out loud on my old Panasonic Speakers, currently listening to Side B slowed down by like 40-50%. Holy fuck, idc this is blasphemy, but the second half sounds soooo good slowed down (Bagels and Spilling Guts in particular). There's just more time to notice the things in background, and melodies and such. Bagels was soooo calming too. I recommend listening to PW slowed down to any fans of the record/anyone having a hard time "clicking" with the songs.

I have an AT LP-120, its midrange price-wise, and fairly hi-fi.

For heavier LP's and records with heavy bass/beats, I would absolutely not recommend the Crosley series, or really any turntable that uses the NP1 style needle. It will skip like crazy and scratch your records. I ruined a few amazing records using these types of turntables :(

As for PW, I'm still enjoying it, and it continues to reveal itself to me!! Great album. I feel like this turntable discussion derailment is necessary since records are really important :P

I spent what you'd call a 'mid-range' amount a couple of years back on a setup that's still singing really nicely. I went for a Project Debut Carbon (the current models come with a great needle too) and power it through a Denon PMA720AE (although, given the choice again, would happily go for the PMA520AE - the extra power from the 720 isn't really needed).

Really love it, and the sound is great. Another good turntable choice around that price range is the Rega RP1 - I went for the Project over it just because I'd heard of a few more quality control issues with the Rega over the Project.

I have a Debut Carbon too, they're really nice. Only problem is you can't easily change the speed. You have to take the whole platter off and manually change the band. It's only annoying if you have a record that switches between 33 and 45 speeds like an EP though.

the panda bear songs on this album have to be the biggest song-writing departure ever for the band, and it doesn't always work. hocus pocus, summing the wretch, and recycling are all really cool tracks. spilling guts is fun (it would overstay its welcome if it were any longer), lying in the grass is another fine track i think, the sample of avey's (i think it's him moaning at least) is weird but i like the song anyway and the last 30 seconds are what i wish most of the album sounded like. Natural selection might end up being my least favorite pb song ever... it's got almost an edm vibe to it (that doesn't work) and kind of annoys me. when the hocketing is used so much it gets overwhelming (especially on this song).
their comments about the album seem like they ditched reverb (and replaced it with hocketing) bc so many people are doing it now but earlier in their careers they never would have let what other bands are doing affect their output. They never did or did not do something because of what others are or not doing. Instead, they would always claim to make whatever they felt like making. now it feels like they felt forced to ditch reverb, an effect that panda especially relied on for his songwriting. Ditching reverb made him totally rework how he has to structure his vocals and rhythms, and like i said earlier it doesn't always work. he's REALLY GOOD at writing drawn out, reverbed melodies, and he didn't let himself use that on this album. I could obviously be wrong and he might just love the fuck out of that effect but that's not how it seems. the guys should make whatever they want, it just seems like they didn't allow themselves to do that this time.

I have to say I needed to listen to the whole record with headphones twice for me to fall head over heels for it.

First listen, I just really wanted things to last longer I think.

Second listen I followed along with lyrics (thanks emceegreg!) and it was a pure delight. Now each playthrough is a new discovery in the layers and a wonderful ride each time. Reminds me of my personal experience riding the rollercoaster, The Beast at Kings Island. The first time I barely remember it and felt it was too short and abrasive, I remember telling my friends I hated it right afterwards but we went on it again and I had a blast. Each consecutive ride years afterwards was an appreciation for the smaller details in the ride (the way things moved, the anticipation built on the climb, etc)

Glad I didn't cave on the samples or bathroom flacs, I think it would have distorted it too much for me (since the songs are so short anyway)

My girlfriend said it overall sounds like "frog farts" after she heard it the first time. She said its not as memorable to her as the previous ones and thinks she liked Centipede Hz more first listen (though we both have a hard time really comparing albums by AC as they are so drastically different)

I dunno why you would join the forum of a band when you only like 3/10 of their albums but...it's a free internet.

I agree with a lot of this. Good points. Agree on the songs of Panda's you like. I like Summing the Wretch pretty well. But Natural Selection is my least favorite...Not gonna be a popular opinion, but On Delay is yet to click for me too

I find it so weird people don't dig Natural Selection. It's a clear stand out for me. The melody is just sooo fun which is in great contrast with the lyrics about the 'powers that be'. And I REALLY don't get the complaint about hocketing on the song cause it barely has any at all. Like are we even hearing the same song???

Hmmm I see it more as their departure from the norm (that they heavily influenced)... Getting rid of reverb was actually one of my favorite things about this album.

of course they're proud of it, i'm just saying in the back of their minds they moved away from reverb because it's popular right now. i guarantee you they still love the songs they wrote and don't even think like "too bad we had to do that stupid hocketing effect so much on this album"
