Hey so I've been re-obsessing about the band's legacy of bootlegs and tours ever since i saw them for the 2nd time last friday in Philly. it made me curous... what's yr favorite era?! all the awesome sides to this band are pretty well documented in their amazing bootleg catalog... excuse me for lumping in 01 AND 02 when there prbly was a big dfference in danse and hcti era shows but bootlegs from then are kind of scant so i thought it was justified. i mean 07 mpp boots are diff than 09 ones as are '11 boots different than '12 boots but i thought dividing the eras mostly by the albums the are associated with worked.

so are you into the kind of mysterious early noise era of the band in the early years? best documented on hollindagin and some of the crack box sides?

or the rawness of acoustic ST era shows?

or the crazy spaced-out freak outs of Feels era shows?

or the awesomely emotional, and soulful SJ era?

do you reeeeally go for the magical whimsy and rework heavy MPP era tours?

or are u way into the darkl/soulful jungle vibes of early chz era or the singles-heavy later-period of this era

i put the brand new era up as an option but i dont guess ppl have enough reason to vote for that one since we just have half a bootleg at this point and its still soo fresh... but i mean it is kind of valid cuz the new songs are incredible live and...
Spoiler: show
alvin row...

so?

for me, i gotta go with mpp era. i came up getting into the band in 08, so it kinda makes sense that id connect with this iteration. the magic of all the reworks + the energy, freshness and whimsy of stuff like graze, from a beach, flowers, house and taste is pretty damn special. they were on a great vibe. plus the lablakley/essplode/fwx suite which is like tooo amazing.

heart also rlly goes out to '06 shows, for those amazing SJ heavy sets like Malta, and also both the pre-chz '11 shows and the later ones. saw them in nola in '12 and they seemed so on point and almost on this stadium vibe doing stuff like peacebone and mpp and brosport with the chz stuff... all the eras are special in their own way tho.

That was really tough. It goes 3 ways for me- I absolutely adore their early awkward noisy days, figuring out how music works with each other basically, and then nailing down the noise textures for HCTI. I would give an awful lot to be able to go back in time and see them do one of the more minimal 2002 shows, with stuff like I See You Pan.

But I also absolutely love the acoustic era, especially the weirder, darker bits, like that spinning on air boot with Tuvin

...but also strawberry feels.... fuck man, cuckoo cuckoo

^i would kill to see early lablakely, essplode and ice cream factory... and pumpkin trilogy!

and ST era is def cool for stuff like tuvin and always you and sponge luke that never ended up recorded.

and ya, live cuckoo is kind of what got me into the band lol. its def a hard call to make...

a follow-up poll could poll on solo tours including person pitch era, pullhair shows, down there tour, deakin shows, TB era, slasher and pbvsgr (which is almost like split in 2 eras in a way). thatd be a tricky one for me too... toss up between DT and pbvsgr tours

PBVSGR would win there for me. the down there shows were really cool and unique, but the grim reaper tour was like... masterful. Noah knew *exactly* what he was doing, nailed the music and nailed the vocals. the overall vibe, setlist choices, visuals... what a great tour. the show i saw (in philly) has a special place in my heart

edit: although the pullhair shows were really special

it'd be a really difficult call between DT and pbvsgr shows for me. but prbly DT, especially since a lot of those songs never got recorded. stuff like jerome, sometimes and esp slow words is mind-blowing, and that version of lucky 1 was sick too.... love the vibe of those shows, the bootlegs blew my mind... but i was also so into the 2nd period of pbvsgr shows (took me longer to appreciate those first bootlegs of those songs... still feels like a different iteration of that era in a way). both amazing tours. deakin and TB and slasher too tho...

Such a tough call. just looking at the poll option reminds me all over again how rich and varied their live catalog is. I have to pick 07-09 just because there are so many good boots and some of my fav particular shows. But I also need to explore more of the Feels/sj era because those shows are massive too. In a way something like Malta almost feels like them at their weirdest and most unhinged. Even though danse/hollin/indian seems even weirder, something about the energy of those 05-06 shows is super freaky and terrifying

But yeah, like u said Diomedes every era is special in its own way. The ST/acoustic era has some amazing moments like Other Music or the Breezeblock session. I like how intimate and messy and off-the-cuff those performances feel.

I also really love Live at 9:30, kinda forgot about it in the wake of the PW hype though. That Pulleys is killer. The 04 Cats Cradle show they recently dropped is also amazing. Really psyched about the possibility of the band hooking us up with more soundboards in the future

far and away 07-09 mpp tours. kinda figured it might be but wasn't sure. friday's show in philly was my favorite live show ever probably so maybe in the near future i could reassess and consider voting for this era lol. but the show really made me wanna know what it musta been like to see them during mpp shows...they just had to avoid new orleans/louisiana completely during those tours.. :x

I forget what show it was exactly, but there's that one recording on youtube of the floor daze that starts with 2 little girls dancing, and has a dog running between the band as theyre playing... really bizarre, haunting video. its fascinating to note how much theyve grown musically, but how they truly are the same band as when they started

I really love the CHz-era setlist, especially that 9:30 set. IMO that's basically as close to a "greatest hits" set as we'll ever get. As much as I loved Friday in Philly, I'd kill for another go-around of that set

^ya those setlists were pretty epic. i agree that it felt like the closest to a "greatest hits" vibe.. i mean purple bottle, peacebone, my girls, bro sport and wwiws... all yr missing basically is fireworks and grass. seems like the band was being really generous in a way, and ppl really did seem to love those shows.

i def enjoyed the hell out of the one i went to, but when i think of the mpp sets with songs like graze, from a beach, taste and reworked rabbits and leafhouse, omg....

glad to see some votes for chz era tho, those were great

Voted for the CHz era, though I might be biased since that was the only era I was able to personally see them live in. But the setlists they were playing during that time were fantastic and the Centipede Hz songs are absolutely killer live IMO.

felt like making this cuz i can't sleep/been obsessing abt their live shows lately. kinda shows how each live era goes through 2 or 3 different incarnations. can't decide if i like 07, 08 or 09 sets the best, but they're all fucking crazy. also getting nostalgic for chz tour now too... love how at least 1 track from all of their early LPs show up at some point in the mpp shows

mpp tours- old songs:
(in 07) doggy, hey light, wcwar, leaf house, essplode(/fwx)
(in 08-09) chocolate girl, lablakely(/fwx), slippi, banshee beat 2
-non-album/b side tracks played: from a beach, graze, bleed, wwiws, panda's comfy
-songs played from previous lp: pbone, unsolved mysteries, chores, fwx, derek

chz tours- old songs:
(in 11) we tigers, did you see the words
(in 12) cobwebs, peacebone
(in 13) wwiws, purple bottle, dystw
-non-album/b side tracks: crimson, honeycomb/gotham
-song played from previous lp: summertime clothes, bro sport in '11, my girls, also frightened and lion in a coma and bsport in '12

pw tour:
Spoiler: show
-old songs: daily routine, bees, loch raven, alvin row
-non-album/b side tracks: gnip gnop, hounds of bairro, jimmy mack (cover)
-songs played from previous lp: none

the centipede show was deff the best i saw, i saw the MPP show too, but it just did not have the energy that the CHZ tour had. granted i think i saw a really intense and good show at like 2 AM to 4 in the morning. it was very rave and people were all on drugs having a good time

Fuuuuuck. I keep forgetting the CHz era.
I got tickets for an outdoor show they were doing in NYC. Ended up being one of the shows they had to cornpill because Avey was sick. I was in town for the makeup show but I didn't get tickets bc my friend had offered to get me concert tickets of my choice for my bday. Friend did not respond when I told her I wanted to see them :(

i saw them on the tail end of CHz and they opened with wwiws and closed with purple bottle... right now that show was better than when i saw them the first night in nyc--though people say the second night was much better...

so i got tix to see them again in may. hoping they'll be totallyconfident in the new songs and jer_hy will be totallycomfortable in the transitions... maybe they'll add some diff songs to setlist by then(not that i don't love the cuts thrown in right now)

how was the show stevienixx?

It was incredible! Watching them play their new songs live with the extended james and transitions gave the songs a new energy for me, and imo Ratking was a better opener than Beedeegee. I think the show overall was just as good as CHz tour, but can't say better just because seeing all four of them rocking out on stage was a real treat, especially with the drums Panda used on that tour. Also the crowd for CHz was better, because everyone danced and got into the music while some people in the crowd this tour complained about all the new songs and only wanted to hear MPP. Someone else also said they wished AnCo would play something from Feels...right after they played Loch Raven *facepalm*.
The performance itself was amazing though, and Avey and Panda did a stellar job with the hocketing live.

it depends if you mean experienced thru boots or actually seen live

acoustic tongs era for boots (noah's ark!!!), and post-mpp for live experience cause it gave me this setlist:

Graze (first time played since pre-mpp, huge surprise)
Summertime Clothes
Leaf House
Guys Eyes
Slippi
#1
Also Frightened
What Would I Want? Sky
My Girls
Fireworks -> Lablakely Dress -> Fireworks
Brother Sport

Encore:
In the Flowers
Comfy in Nautica
Lion in a Coma

^see thats a beautiful set of songs, damn. i always loved mpp's live era along with the album a lot but lately my nostalgia for that era/time must be rlly intense... omg those songs :)

that set's amazing and yet it doesnt even have some personal highlights for me like From a Beach, Doggy/Hey Light (only 07), or Taste; they had so many great songs in rotation then... #1 with those songs is really sweet tho, not used to seeing that with this set.

yeah #1 was pretty unusual for that era, i remember people being pissed that they went to the other show instead of this one lol (they played two shows back to back at the same venue and the other show didn't get #1, comfy, flowers, or graze lol)

o damn yal were lucky. it was also so sweet that year that wwiws showed up all of the sudden right after mpp came out, and then bleed too. good times. I also remember thinking a fwx --> lablakely or essplode suite would be a part of their sets forever then... but i think we're still a few years off from fireworks returning now... (if evr??)

^ya that's how I'm feeling... the recent sets have seemed pretty damn great. kind of reminds me of mpp shows except a little more "muscular" in the same way chz shows were maybe, except now its more synth heavy than ever and guitarless... stuff like gnip gnop, jimmy mack, on delay, hounds of bairro and burglars is sounding reeeeally great live, but all of it really, not to mention 4 of the sweetest oldies imaginable (new loch raven is so blissful..). ya i keep going back to vids of the first night in philly, and recordings of boston too... really great stuff so far.

also wondering how long AR will last. hoping its a long-term staple but stuff like reworked banshee or chocolate girl only lasted for like a year or so.. somewhat small blips within a full live era.

^nice, more boots will be great! and ya DR and Loch Raven were definitely "transcendent" for me too in philly. those 2 songs were probably the most euphoric moments of the night... along with alvin i guess, but thats kind of a different feeling to it. feel like this set has a lot of different moods in the songs but it flows together really well

yeah it's really sweet how these shows mix the live instrumentation feel of C Hz tours with MPP-ish vocals. Something about Jeremy's drumming also reminds me a bit of Feels era, stuff like early Tikwid that has that crazy energy

I'm also really impressed with how well they pull off the PW tracks live, all the synth ornamentation sounds amazing. also how the fuck is Jeremy playing Summing the Wretch live lol. the absolute madman
