I mean eating celery not any other kind of celery. that's just what it smells of to me. the cover and the slipmat, specifically.

As someone who really didn't like Chz outside of Pulleys and NTB, I freaking love PW. Can't wait to see the boys (for the first time!) in Denver in a week or so. I peeked into the live discussion thread and omg those old songs they're playing for this tour. Heck yeah!

Somebody said there was a sad onstage, but it sounded like they played Stetson's recoding during litg. Can someone confirm this?
Also, thanks for recording the whole thing! So spoiled! Did u happen to record golden gal as well?

That's been confirmed as a sample. Stetson was only on Floridada.

I'm not sure if the cover material is exclusive to the deluxe (it's very shiny and almost plastic-y) so who knows if it's on both. Someone with the standard LP do a smell test!

I don't understand the people that say they're disappointed with the album because they don't emotionally connect with it....
It's only been out for 3 days!!
Usually emotional experiences with an album take a little longer than that.....like you can't expect AC to do all the heavy lifting on your emotional experience, you've gotta go and have a unique experience while listening to the album in order to have an emotional connection

It did freebird in 320 almost a week ago, and in shittier quality a bit less than a week before that...

MPP production rework isn't too bad, actually. just a different angle on the same songs (and it's pretty subtle). worth a listen i'd say

Actually, it's that people expect to connect with it in the SAME ways, which is ridiculous. For the record, this one is full of emotion

Hi guys and girlies. I've lurked here off and on for a LONG time (is slippi werewo still around?) but had to finally chime in about Painting With.
Isn't the whole theme of this record (the Dadaist influence, the Ramones-style immediacy, etc) the "shifting of perspectives"? They've thrown it out there in almost every interview - lyrically they're coming from a new (less insular) place, musically they're shaking it up again (what's new!?), thematically and conceptually they're referencing art movements that inherently distorted traditional paradigms. And yet, instead of opening our minds, we're waiting for it to "click" or lamenting the loss of the "old AC."
This record sounds like nothing I've ever heard. I'll admit I was thrown for a loop the first time I heard it in full. I couldn't wrap my head around it. Like a new town, a relationship, a hobby, and great art I think you have to stick with Painting With to see it for what it really is - an amazing new AC record with a totally original sound. The details and harmonies of these songs are just beginning to reveal themselves.
I agree with what some have said about how this record needs to be felt and not just listened to. The Dada and Cubist movements weren't intellectual as much as they were instinctual and sensual, and I think the same applies to Painting With. Put this thing on in your car and turn it up. "Well if you're out and about on the freeways this morning noooooo dinosaurs to worry about." Hell yeah. Big smile every time. These songs sound HUGE. Animal Collective: The Ride? Hell yeah Mike Powell. I guess you're either on the bus or you're off.
Vertical grabbed me first. Something about Avey's vocals (the tone, the pacing, the melody) reminds me of the Sung Tongs days. That ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo breakdown at 1:47 is so chewy. And that ethereal outro with the synth that sounds like birds chirping, the bells - beautiful.
The Burglars. This thing is a lovely mess. I can barely make out a word they're saying but I think that's part of the charm. Avey's spitfire delivery is so... groovy, for lack of a better word! I keep getting these Eastern/arabesque images from that rising and falling synth that buzzes and skips like a harmonium in the left channel. I know the lyrics are out there but I kind of enjoy not knowing what the hell words Avey, mostly in the second half of the song, is cramming in there. Hell yeah. It's like the wheels are about to come off.
Bagels in Kiev. The intro almost reminds me of one of The Clientele's train station field recordings that they use in so many songs ("Boring Postcard" into "Emptily Through Holloway," "K"). I feel like I'm landing on a foreign planet… the Ukraine! Some wacky stuff here. More Eastern vibes again. Saucy rhythm. Videogame-esque sounds remind me of something. And that ringing tone at the end. I like how it kind of lasts a little too long.
Can anything else be said about On Delay? It does sound like the Postal Service at times. So what? The middle piano part slays like everyone says. I love how low Panda's voice (or is it Avey's?) goes when they sing "a place that's thrice [something]". Emotional punch in the gut for sure. I hear the '90s r&b/trip-hop vibe in the piano line that Panda was going for on Tomboy going on here. Definitely the "wettest" song (reverb-y, echo-y, tremelo-y) on the record right?
Spilling guts sounded so bland and uninspired to me for the first few listens. Now I think it might be one of my favorites on Painting With. The kalimba-like sounds that come in at 0:28 are so gentle but to me give the song a totally different dimension than the in-your-face distortion punch of the main melodic line (the one that matches the beat) alone would. Love the call and response vox that end the song too. Does Avey even sing on this song?
I've been thinking about something else too. These songs aren't beautiful in a way we normally think of "beautiful music." Is that why so many people are bummed? I think AC are ahead of the curve with Painting With. It's subtle compared to their past records. But the more time I spend with these songs the more uniquely beautiful this whole thing is, warts and all.
If you read this far, thanks for indulging. AC's music has meant a lot to me over the years. So psyched that they continue to challenge and grow and make soulful music that is true to their vision. It's art, dad! See you in Salt Lake on 3/2?

I enjoy the new album.
But as I have been revisiting songs from Spirit, I have to admit that no songs on the new record match the emotions and the magic a song like Alvin Row can produce in me.
It's unfair to expect bands to produce an almost spiritual experience everytime they release a record. Or maybe it's up to the listener and I am just getting too old.
Or maybe they just wanted to produce a solid little pop album? Not every piece of art has to be a "spiritual, emotional experience".

rlly love this album a lot. it kinda makes me feel conflicted abt my love for chz, cuz like i thought i rlly liked that album, and i def still do, but im feeling like i like and connect with this one a lot more. maybe i only liked like half of chz as much as all of this... idk too early to tell. could be cuz of the lack of boots or just cuz its so fresh. but i just feel like i love this album a lot as a whole. very much an album-y album...also kinda love that its on 1 lp, makes a weird difference when i listen to the vinyl version

^Awesome.
Hopefully they come back to Australia soon. I will defs travel to the eastern states just to see them.
In Perth they were on at the same time as Red Hot Chili Peppers so they had a tiny crowd, but it was nice and intimate. I'd definitely prefer to see them at their own show.
