oh snap, "on delay" finally clicked for me... all systems GO! the piano on that song has always been its redeeming quality, but now it just sets it on fire...
lol
i know right!
i felt so weird not really being able to relate with you guys about "on delay." still, i like (at least) 6-7 songs on the album more than that one ... but man i get it now - great track
and ya this album has sounded the best while listening to the vinyl with headphones. its gotta be my favorite ac production/mixing job. the sounds are so crisp but also really warm and organic sounding.
But as I have been revisiting songs from Spirit, I have to admit that no songs on the new record match the emotions and the magic a song like Alvin Row can produce in me.
It's unfair to expect bands to produce an almost spiritual experience everytime they release a record. Or maybe it's up to the listener and I am just getting too old.
every time someone speaks of another they speak of themselves at the same time
if you aren't yet capable of making a connection to the album, indeed it's on you. animal collective created this; animal collective also created everything in the past.
criticisms are fair game, but, it's unfair to expect...
Someone on Reddit made a "MPP version" of Painting With by, as far as I can tell, just washing it out with a ton of reverb and other effects. People seem to like it, and it baffles me. Can anyone explain why this would be something anyone would want? Or why it gives it "more emotion"? Perhaps the person that made it posts here.
Todd Glass would be all for that lol (CBB reference)
If the tracks were isolated I could see that being worth a cursory glance. But eh, nah
Yeah, I think it has merit as an experiment, but beyond that I don't see it. I have no desire for this band to remake the same album just with different songs (I suppose it's possible I do have that desire for some bands -- Weezer, perhaps).
I usually keep my negative views to myself because i don't want to ruin someone else's experience due to my lack thereof but I felt pretty burned by this album.
I only listened to Floridada and Golden Gal going in (I enjoyed them both), and only a few times each to keep the first time listening to the album pure. I was so ready to finally hear the record, wore my nice headphones, and settled in for Painting With... Only to be disappointed time and time again.
I just felt that each track was very samey and was just in a middle ground, not very chaotic (which is an aspect of animal collective I love) and no slow ethereal tracks, just all occupying the same basic space. I also feel both Panda and Avey lacked the usual conviction in their singing. Like they just laid down the vocals for a demo take to get an idea of how the track might sound once they go back and finish it up but never did. Not to mention the vocal back and forth with can be nice once in a while but is used too much. I also enjoyed the technique better when they complete a line before they switch instead of doing it with every word in a verse.
With that being said I still think it has it's moments and I can't wait to see them live, because I think it will transfer beautifully to a live setting.
It makes me sad that after listening countless times, trying to force myself to enjoy it, I've had to finally accept that I didn't enjoy this record nearly as much as their others. I'm sorry to bring negativity into the thread but I felt I had to post my feelings somewhere.
have a good sunday!

No worries here. There's been plenty of negativity in the thread already. And at least you didn't state your opinion as fact like some tend to do.
Maybe you'll be able to revisit the album after seeing them live and appreciate it then. Or after checking out the lyrics like some have. Or maybe it's just not for you. I know how hard it can be to be excited for something that doesn't turn out to be up your alley; I saw The Phantom Menace in theaters.
you guys are weirdly on edge over people who are bothered by their inability to connect to this like they did with the past albums
lol, no i just think it's funny how people keep calling it "samey" or not "magic". i totally understand people not liking the album (i mean that's also shown in the reviews); i just think the wording to describe the feeling is funny
just wanna say that the production on this album is seriously stellar. I love having everything so crystal clear.
I agree! Production wise, I feel like this is definitely one of their best sounding albums.
I'm also really impressed with the fact that they didn't use many plug-in's and the tape delay's were recorded live. I would love to know more about the recording processes of this album, and the equipment used. Hopefully we get more info in some interviews.
