my early favourites are: The Burglars, Golden Gal, Summing the Wretch and On Delay

Feel it's a mix of great songs and some that just kind of go by.. but it'll probably grow on me more.

Even though this thread has been mostly about reviews the last couple pages, hopefully nobody guts for me for sharing what I think is the most relatable (for me) review so far: http://www.popmatters.com/review/animal ... ting-with/

one of the big issues ive been having with this. agree with much of that review

I wonder what else Animal Collective have up their sleeve for the next couple months... Wasn't there rumors that they recorded a music video in South America, and the visuals Abby made still haven't been used in anything. And of course the last two songs that they mentioned in an interview.

I am REALLY REALLY REALLY hoping one of those two songs is a studio version of Maya/From a Beach

It would totally fit with the vibe of this album I think.

That review is objectively wrong though. Not only is there "novelty" as defined by the dictionary, this review points it out. And almost half the songs have structures that don't fit into any obvious mold.

What? This is probably one of their tightest and most cohesive albums! It's too much so apparently, people want that "WTF" moment on the album I guess...I really enjoy Painting With though personally. It's quickly becoming one of my top 3 AC albums.

its just very same-y to me, im not looking for wtf moments but if you skip to a random point in just about all the songs in a row it just sounds too similar to me... there are some fine tracks but as a whole i feel like even CHz had more highs than this, and a variety of them

as usual with criticism, no one has to get mad at me or demonclusters or whoever else isnt totally into this right now. i dont think what im saying is all that outlandish. and no i dont think its a 6.2, but im kind of surprised that im into CHz more than this

The Pop Matters review is at least respectable in that it concisely states what they felt was wrong with the album. And that's all I want from a review. Tell me why you loved, hated, or shrugged at it and why you care enough to review it.

also got my copy today!

packaging is cool but of course nothing revolutionary. not a gatefold or anything.

only thing I think they dropped the ball on was the slipmat.. it looks cool and supposedly syncs up to recycling, but yet I can't lay it on top of the record as it plays obviously. and maybe if the record were clear I could put it under the record, but that's not the case either. my turntable doesn't rotate on it's own with the needle in the home position, soo now i am left with holding the needle away from the home position, while playing the song on my laptop and holding a strobe light with my other hand? major major bummer.

with that said, very much enjoying the album.

Every time I hear new AC music it disheartens me to know that I will never make something quite like it.

Everything they've made, good or bad, is remarkably their own. They've created a world in sound that mercifully intersects with ours in a way that allows us to hear it, but they remain distinctly other. I wouldn't call them the greatest band, because that moniker doesn't belong to anyone in the opinion of this Cultural Attache, but there is certainly no other group like them. Everything is beautiful and everything hurts.

same favs :)

I think Recycling is going to be a jam track in live shows, with the middle bridge being the point where they break apart the song and groove for a while, like Pulleys received in most live shows. What other songs do you guys think will turn in to the improv jammers in live shows?

I'm with Zappa. What makes the pitchfork review so irritating is that there's no aesthetic criteria being applied. It's like the little runt is reviewing (and lamenting) his own *sniff* lost youth and taking it out on the band.

not if the more important of aspect of the album isn't just the songs but where it places the band in the context of their output and the larger scheme of what's happening in music.

Man, why did they post the official floridada lyrics if they never intended to share the rest? Such a tease. This sounds like a pretty interesting album lyrically, but some of it is just impossible to make out.

it is my firm view that the most important aspect of an album is the album itself. you may disagree, but i think the songs matter most

exactly this

It really sucks that because of this p4k review, we can't even discuss what we as a community think about this album. Instead we are discussing the validity of opinions of rushed reviewers trying to meet a deadline/working for larger publications that are always going to be pushing specific ideas/trends/etc.

Not that there haven't been well though out posts that express why they like or dislike the album, just saying there should be more of that.

I understand that what is happening around the music as it is released is interesting, and relevant to the general idea of discussing the album, but if anything, that stuff is more interesting to discuss when looking back on the album as opposed to when it first comes out and we are all still digesting it.
