4th listen now. :weed:

such a great album.

natural selection is easily my fave and a standout no nonsense track.

hocus pocus and vertical are prob my least favorite.

golden gal and burglars had to grow on me a little, but they so tasty.

i think the guys made a good call on their single choices for sure. all three are shiners on this album.

really happy to be in the middle of another animal collective season, and really thankful and proud for the band.

:applause:

since avey and panda half and halfed the writing, i tried to figure out which songs were whose. I think its avey: floridada, vertical, burglars, bagels, on delay, golden. panda: hocus, lying, natural, spilling, summing, recycling. the only one i wasn't sure of the writer was lying but i guess it is panda.

Just so I'm clear - we believe the primary songwriter for each song is:

FloriDada - Dave
Hocus Pocus - Noah
Vertical - Dave
Lying in the Grass - Noah
The Burglars - Dave
Natural Selection - Noah
Bagels in Kiev - Dave
On Delay - Dave
Spilling Guts - Noah
Summing the Wretch - Noah
Golden Gal - Dave
Recycling - Noah

correct?

There are no songs on this album that have a wow factor in the same way stuff like In The Flowers, Reverend Green, Banshee Beat, etc had. Hope it grows on me

i couldn't disagree more. for me, burglars->natural selection->bagels->on delay is the most emotional wonderful roller coaster of energy and feels and almost everything i have come to enjoy about animal collective as a group (and so many new things too) the boys have ever produced.

like wow, TFW natural selection ends and u wanna go back to the burglars but then u remember that bagels in kiev is next :smugdog:

And yes, Burglars through On Delay is fucking AMAAAAAZING.

I sincerely believe after a couple months people will be putting this in their top 3 AC albums.

FUUUUCK THOSE LITTLE HARMONIC TRILLS ON THE CHORUS OF VERTICAL

I fucking looooooove that shit. There's another song that has this bloingy bing bongy 8 bit type syncopated melody that is just too god damn boss. I can't recall exactly which song it is, I wanna say On Delay, but god DAMN these boys known how to jam.

Finally got my copy and listened to it. I'm in complete agreement with everyone. The Burglars and On Delay are by far the best songs.

this is pretty damn varied. i think ppl are being thrown by the style of pandas songs or something, it does have a consistent energy and textural quality in the same way mpp and all their albums do rlly.

Totally agree. I am sure I'll end up really liking/loving it after it digests but the lack of variety is surprising. Aside from the constant back and forth vocals, just using the same set of synth sounds or whatever in almost every song makes the album way less interesting than their previous records. There isn't that one super song, as demonclusters said. Which is ok...just different.

Very excited to see how they pull this off live and what old songs they bring back. Guys Eyes and Taste seem to fit pretty naturally. As for jams that I think would work well but will never ever happen...Bat You'll Fly, Native Belle, Water Curses, Winter Wonder Land. One can dream...

same, but these are close to reaching that top notch ac level: hocus pocus, natural selection, bagels in kiev, spilling guts, summing the wretch, golden gal, and recycling ... so that is 7 amazing songs for me... but not @ GOD TIER of safer, chocolate girl, wwiws, i think i can, taste, in the flowers, reverend green, #1, banshee beat, grass, bluish... so many, but i am very happy.

I don't really understand the whole "same sounds" sorta thing some of you guys are saying. The only similarities song to song I'm finding are the percussion sounds and the fact that almost every track has this upbeat rushed sort of pace. Each song kind of has its own thing going texturally.

And almost every song has like a what the fuck moment that makes me laugh or grin like crazy. A very catchy moment. A lot of it is immediate, but some of it is challenging you to discover it and dive deeper. It's some of their most complex songwriting yet, but delivered in a simple, stripped down sort of way. I also don't understand some of the early criticism, that the songs don't go anywhere or develop. That's crazy to me, every song transforms itself in really surprising and cool ways. Some ways once again are more immediate while others change in subtle and hypnotic ways. This one is a masterpiece I think. I don't know that for sure because I want it to sink in more, but I think anyone not totally sold on this one will come around 100%

I do understand the Pet Sounds comparisons, because I do think Painting With has a lot of variety. Just because an album inhabits a specific world (like I think Pet Sounds does) doesn't mean it doesn't vary. They are taking pop music and hooks and looking at them in another light, and challenging what it means to sound accessible or "poppy." Pet Sounds did the same thing in a very groundbreaking way, and that's the correlation I see. I also think Animal Collective are their most experimental when they're fucking with the idea of what pop music can be, more so than their early noise experiments.

Maybe Currents by Tame Impala. I honestly don't think there was one last year though, but Currents and VEGA Intl. Night School were my two favorite albums of 2015, so I'm pretty biased.

Still though. Person Pitch or even MPP is a much better fit for a "cultural significance" comparison.

This. Seriously.

Enjoy the hell out of it and play it into the ground. But let the thing officially release before talking about its significance.

I also agree. I do think it's a step in a new direction for the band though. The whole lack of reverb and shorter songs worried me at first, but this works on so many levels. I'm only on my 2nd playthrough of it right now, so I'm going to wait and fully judge it after listening to it a couple dozen times.

Not to dump on the good time you've having (I'm happy you're enjoying the album so much) but re: the Pet Sounds comparisons, I think you need to read a book and do some deeper analysis on why Pet Sounds is regarded as the album that it is, lol. Maybe also wait until at least a year has passed since this album came out, since it didn't even officially come out yet.

If you're talking about your own personal cultural significance (?) then more power to you

for me i have found that ac songs take a whole new meaning and significance (i guess for all songs) when i understand the lyrics and special meaning behind them

so i cant wait to know the lyrics... but i think this time there is going to be a hidden message... from the interviews it seems that panda is saying that the interplay of two singers might make new sounds appear possibly changing the meaning of the songs... this might be difficult to figure out but i think it will be different for different people unless it is universal... don't know if i am making sense

also, they (band) said that the songs are not going to be super personal and that they wanted to detach themselves from personal meanings... so i guess it is open to many different interpretations

As someone who felt that everything from MPP onwards, excluding Down There, lacked vitality, this has bowled me over. I understand the concerns about a similar palette of synths and hocketing, and yet, everything on here has grown on me already. I am staggered by some people's favourites and least favourites, like I don't see how Vertical is anything but instant top tier AC, but it's great to see all these different faves.

The nature of this style of songwriting means you don't really have the same classic AC payoffs, like the Banshee Beat chord change, or the NTB oh oh ohs, or I'M ALL RIGHT but those giddy moments are there, just packed in tighter. The directness is innovation for them and there's still an incredible harmonic richness and structural complexity to many of these songs, and perfectly timed left turns and gear shifts. The kazoo stomp and piano trills of On Delay may be the best example. It doesn't sound like anything they've done before but it's Animal Collective all over. The way Vertical builds, in terms of rhythms and vocal and instrumental harmony is absolutely sensational, to me. Every bar something is changing, moving in and out, shifting, twitching but it's done with such a light touch. It could easily sound like a fucking mess but it moves through several phases, taking the tone of the song lighter and airier and brighter, at every turn.

Also, as someone else said, a fantastic driving record!
