hey so here is a place where you can share things that have uncanny similarities to AC+solo songs, but that came before AC.

generally i think it'd be cool to keep it to things they haven't explicitly listed as influences. and i'm not really talking samples either (there's another thread for that). or copycats of AC. just older things that bear a resemblance.

but i'm not gonna stop you from posting that stuff either.

Spoiler: show
I'll start with this one, "Girl" by Poison Dwarfs from 1988. (note: video is slightly NSFW.)
at about 0:46, the vocals come in and it reminds me a ton of Down There vocals.

Spoiler: show
and this one, EP-4 "Mineraloid (Cad's Favorite)" from 1984 sounds to me like some combo of gang gang dance, sung tongs, and HCTI.

oh, and if you think i'm totally crazy for thinking either of these sound like AC, you should say so. then maybe i'll finally get to the bottom of just how cracked and twisted i am

Cool thread/Nice picks

This is an obvious mention, but I'll just post it for the sake of firsties:
Spoiler: show
It's funny; I can't think of a specific song to compare it to but if I were to listen to this for the first time ever and you were to tell me that this was a transitional track by Animal Collective, I'd probably believe you.

I'll write what these songs remind me of/are most similar to

Simon and Garfunkle 59th Bridge Street Song
Spoiler: show
The rhythm and rhyme scheme remind me a lot of Summertime Clothes

Yoshis Island-Underground Theme
Spoiler: show
Dubby, reminds me of Slow Motion or something that'd be on PBMTGR

Cool idea for a thread Qual

Just a part of a song, but the linked section of the Millipede Song from Charlie the Unicorn always gave me serious AC vibes:

Vocals, backwards loops, building a soundscape. yep, this one works.

^^ This just blew my mind. That forest theme is so engrained in my head from playing that game over and over but I never made the connection.

This one's a total copycat too, but I'll post it anyway because it's so damn good:

Girls is a cool song. Totally undeniable avey style vox. But yeah I wouldn't watch that vid at work. Full nsfw or no

It's not proto-AC, but the sung verse reminds me a lot of Down There-era Avey Tare:

Someone on here posted about Raccoo-oo-oon recently, I think in the HCTI thread. Tragically under-rated band, very similar to HCTI in the best way.
Edit: I misunderstood the question, this was not before AC. Still worth a listen though :)

I remember Geo said they aren't really influenced by industrial music, but the backing vocals w the tremolo effect in this song always reminded me of Avey's vocals on Lablakely Dress
