i think that's pretty fair, i love it but it definitely feels like some pbvsgr throwaway tracks so it makes sense to me

I also don't have a problem with the review. I would definitely not call them throwaway tracks, but I think this EP lacks a sense of cohesion compared to most of Panda's other releases. I would rate it higher, but I'm probably biased.

But if 9:30 doesn't get a 9.3 I'll burn all my Pitchfork stickers, t-shirts, and buttons.

But I'm curious, do you dislike all ratings or just numerical? Is there a critical system that works for you? I ask because, I can't decide if I think these types of "reviews" have any value to me at all. I used to enjoy reading film reviews on the Dissolve, but it all seems so silly.

this. although the one website i do check up on frequently for new reviews is TMT, simply for the fact that they consistently bring to my attention great albums i do not hear about anywhere else. and i don't usually read the reviews, just check the tags/'similar to' of newly reviewed albums to see if i should check em out.

I don't like any objective system, whether it's numbers, letter grades, stars etc. Part of it is because I think that music is pretty personal/subjective, but more importantly I don't like putting music on a simple linear scale like that. Anytime you make a distinction between one piece of music being "good" and another one being "bad" there are countless assumptions built into that distinction. We group music styles into genres based on the most obvious of these assumptions (e.g. pop music should feature vocals, dance music should have a beat, etc), but the more specific these assumptions get the less obvious they are. What if dance music really doesn't have to feature a beat? when should it and should it not? obviously these are stupid questions to ask literally, but what I mean is that in order to find out the answer you have to just listen to the music and decide for yourself. there are no rules. every time I think I find one, I find an exception

of course I understand that every review isn't meant to be 100% objective, or a comprehensive treatise on aesthetics. and if people enjoy reading reviews then I see no problem with that, I've enjoyed reading some that gave me some new insight into the music. But I still think it's stifling to judge music based on a linear objective scale when there are any number of criteria that make music either good or bad depending on the time, place, person, genre, context, the list goes on. Drew from Matmos has a great piece on the Quietus about why lists in music suck (which i also agree with) and he gets into the problem with objective scoring in music, I highly recommend reading this bit here: http://thequietus.com/articles/16052-dr ... ay?page=14

i just hate like, there's no way anybody done with the journey these songs are taking you on, so that's why reviews make no sense. so many of my fav songs i thought were duds when i first heard them, and then you wait a while. maybe a year or two. and it's completely fresh and knocks you on your ass.

and the opposite has happened too. there have been albums that i thought i was in love with but then i listen to em after a break and they sound like shit

my point is, your opinions of these tracks is not set in stone and its better not to obsess about how you think you think and to actually just do the thinking, y'know? everybody is so caught up in relevancy and the meta-ness of AC's music (have they lost it? will they get it back?? find out more at 11!) that it really annoys me. there's nothing wrong with being "i don't dig this" and leaving it at that. there's no grand reason for why you enjoy the music you do or don't enjoy the music. it just is happening man

totally agreed and I hate when people say AC has "lost it" just because they didn't like some of their newer music, or even worse, just because they didn't get it's ok

It's part of their argot. It stands for Only Geo and is used to let fans know that the track only features geo besides the lead singer, in this case Noah. If you look at their wiki you'll see a couple of songs feature the OG prefix in their working titles down the years.
