I've no idea what this album will sound like. I'd like it to just arrive fully formed, so I can only take it on its own terms - as I did with every album before MPP. I enjoyed not getting certain songs for months and years in some cases, and letting them grow on me as I figured them out. This has been one of the most rewarding parts of listening to Animal Collective, for me, as my brain has adapted to new ways of listening and opened new worlds to explore.
Listening to bootlegs, while incredibly exciting, has somewhat tarnished my enjoyment of Tomboy, Greaper and MPP, particularly as the live versions functioned as jumping off points, rather than goals to work towards in the studio. This is how they've always always worked but I just wasn't around to hear bootlegs for anything before MPP. This partly explains my deeper connection to those records and those times. They're self-contained chapters which I had to approach on their terms before I really knew and loved them.
Through listening to the process in development, ie. boots, I became attached to the performances I felt closest to, and the variations which most appealed to me. This explains why I disliked the relative clutter of Faces In The Crowd versus the pretty serenity of the live Ms. Pacman, and yet I found the stripped back Jabba very weak compared to the intense live version. I became attached to 'my' song, not Noah's. This is a surefire way to disappointment, yet the only option is to ignore the boots, which is tough. Tough shit, basically. It's better than pointing the finger about 'what went wrong'.
I'd just like one more album where I go in cold.

Holy shit that Maya track. That's exactly what I have in my head when I think AnCo and techno. Hope that's what we're getting.
Guess it's not really From A Beach anymore either, eh? Lyrics are totally different

It's useful to remember that half of that track is simply Isolee - Beau Mot Plage. There's virtually no AC input with the backing rhythms.

Oh really? So Avey made that for his set?
Still, that's the kind of thing I'd love form the next LP

Anybody else wanna see Avey play a banjo? Like a really heavily affected banjo? Just me?

Seconded. You know what would be gnarly? A banjo version of Taste. I'm talkin the version of Taste before they accidentally erased their memory card. 2007 Midi Festival version.

I would love to know the story behind why studio taste is so different

Yeah I remember reading something in an interview about it. They said that at one point while in the studio, they accidentally erased one of the sampler's memory cards that contained the bulk of the sounds for Taste. They had to basically go back to square one for that song and rebuild it and it just came out a lot different.
Somewhere on the internet is a crisp original version of Taste that they performed on a radio station before the card got toasted. I have no links, I'm sorry.

Man that sucks, the original version is unreal...
I've heard the one you're talking about, I think it's in the live archive in a BBC set where they also played Winter's Love, What Would I Want? Sky and something else

That can't be true, they did this BBC session after MPP came out and it sounds exactly like older live versions. You could argue maybe they unearthed the old samples but that's be assuming a lot

You know what, I think you're right. The memory card that got erased was one that had the original samples for My Girls. That's why they have the synth arpeggio instead of that piano-like sample from the live versions.

could be wrong, but i thought they switched to the glassy synths on my girls cause the twinkly pianos didn't sound good recorded...same reason they changed from the harp to piano on safer....

This is correct. It's in an interview where they talk about how their biggest song almost didn't make the album.
Mildew- I wonder if you're confusing it with the lost cable story for Bluish (that still never made that much sense lol)

I can finally, officially confirm that the pianos sounded better.

"It was the hardest to get to sound right,” Weitz says. "It wasn't necessarily the hardest technically to record. Also it was the hardest song to fit on the record sonically because it's one of the sparsest songs, it's not nearly as dense as the others. Sometimes it sounded a bit empty or too straightforward. It didn't have an interesting sonic personality, until we got to mixing.”

Nah it's p much confirmed. I think Noah mentioned that Deakin wouldn't be on it after a show recently. I feel like it was confirmed elsewhere too, but I can't remember where.

If they dropped that version of Mountain Game as a single out of nowhere I wouldn't even be mad. Can't get over that weird uneven beat. Reminds me of wwiws

Yeah so is Mountain Game a re-purposed Down There track. Cos it really sounds like something off of Down There. I'm losing track at this stage. I might be thinking of Sometimes/In Photographs.

Yeah. "Sometimes" was the title I made up when we recorded Avey's show. It was definitely easy to miss the conversation on here about Dave posting the actual title on Instagram!

it was played on the down there tour, if it is indeed the red dead redemption track (there's confusion over whether it's sometimes or in photographs) then it wasn't a down there track i'd assume, but if that's not the case then it's a down there outtake

Yeah, I like the uneven sound beat. Too bad the quality is pretty low.
