so, I like Danse Manatee, but i don't like how it's mixed. I read somewhere that the CD reissue version of Spirit/Danse had danse remastered by Rusty Santos. Is this true, and if so, where the heck can i find that version

on CD.
it's the most common version by far, it was distributed way more widely than the original issue which was just a limited run. so that's probably the version you already know. I haven't heard the original version yet but it's probably no better, sorry.
if something's badly recorded there's only so much you can do with mixing, and if something's badly mixed you can only do so much with mastering. I'm sure Rusty did the best he could.

Pretty sure it was the vinyl reissue that was remastered by rusty Santos.
I always thought the vinyl version sounded better, but that might be placebo

Me neither
Before I got the lp, I only ever listened with headphones which with Danse especially make it sound like the sounds are being directly printed into your brain and it can get really claustrophobic with the harsh noise.
On vinyl I have it going through speakers and it has space to bounce around the room and breathe a little

makes sense, considering what geo has to say about the recording of the album:

We were also interested in extreme frequencies, both low and high, and how they occupied space in the room and moved around in your heads.

I would like to concur that the vinyl is the way to go with this album. I love it.

No it was the CD reissue like I said. But the vinyl reissue almost certainly used the same master instead of the old one.

That reissue cover is real cool though. Kinda wish it was an insert or on the inside of the jacket

It took me an embarrassingly long time to see the original covers on the front

Danse's frequency game is pretty strong to me, just because the sonic WTFery is so out there, that the conventions of mixing kind of go out the door. What I'd really like to hear is a remix of Spirts where the instruments are leveled out and compressed a bit more honestly. The songs are so epic, but the recording so amateur. Recorded to a Tascam around verious livingrooms, no? Eh, probably mean you couldn't even do much to the master at this point. Most likely mixdown tracks on there.
