we should have a place to discuss this album other than just general thread.
haven't listened to this baby in a while until this morning and i remembered how much i love it. mostly been listening to feels stuff and before since the post-chz-comedown. this is such solid effort front to back. still kinda wish they'd done from a beach though - it's a closer vibe to the rest of the jams than lion in a coma imo.

i wish they'd put that version of Who Could Win A Rabbit on there.. i know, the song was already on feels, but fuck it, that version was awesome.
maybe from a beach will be on some future release?

Listened to it in it's entirety today cause it's a goodun. Cant help but be bothered by the lack of good lead-ins on this album though. When they play songs like brothersport or bluish live they have these awesome theatric build-ups, but on the album they just jump right in.

I love MPP. In my opinion, it's their best album by more than a mile.

Probably about my 4th or 5th favorite AC album and i also agree From a Beach should've made it instead of lion in a coma or bluish. They could have also put it as a b-side to one of their singles because mpp was the only album post 2003 that didn't have any b-sides.

I agree Lion in a Coma is great and From a Beach is almost an afterthought in comparison. From a Beach would have been a perfect fit for Fall Be Kind.

the part that gets Lyin going is as soon as avey's vocals come in. Alot of soothing instrumentation is used there and there are thing floating around. I would totally recommend closing your eyes just as that comes in. and on the live versions its the opposite. Avey's voice is yelling as soon as the vocals come in and he sounds like he's almost crying sometimes. Album version: rest, live version: frantic and boomy. I explained this horribly. The way on the album he is talking so calmly about such sad things really gets me "when all this mess will get me down I will depart from Chinatown"

I like Lion in a Coma but the second half always starts to annoy me for whatever reason, that's why i'd substitute either it or Bluish for From a Beach to be on there.

Next time I see AC I'm going to ask them to release extended collector's editions of all their albums. Like where MPP has 3 minute long intros to their songs and whatnot.

That would be soo awesome. I don't see it ever happening though especially for their older albums. I remember seeing in an interview them saying that they cant perform a lot of their older songs any more because of stolen or lost samples and whatnot.

i don't hate at all...it's an awesome song, but i just get slightly different vibes from it than i do the rest of the mpp jams. pulleys is the same way with the rest of the songs on chz and winter wonder land on sj.
as my girlfriend put it, "they keep putting a 'green man' song on each album. like a charlie song...a wildcard." it's not necessarily a sonics thing because WWL is more sonically similar to the rest of the jams on SJ than something like #1, but it's the one song that seems to deviate most from the common mood/vibe of the rest of the album. same with pulleys, which share more in common with mpp stuff tempo-instumentation wise than chz jams. lion in a coma is a total wildcard. dat sample.
tldr- winter wonderland, lion in a coma, pulleys = green man material

Even though it's the poppiest, this is the one that took the longest to grow on me. Didn't start really clicking with it until over a year after it was released. I don't listen to it often but it pretty much sounds better and better every time I hear it. I feel dumb for hating on it for being 'too clean' when it came out now

very interesting.
but i always thought that no more running was more out of place on that album. basically because its surrounded by two quick, upbeat songs. and if we just took the pattern of 2nd to last song theres cukoo which i think is also fairly different than the rest of SJ.. that is something so dark after the momentum starting picking up again after WWL. but i only say' picking up' because of the deep, intrinsic thoughts im always left with after reverend through #1. i guess id call cukoo more of a 'wrench' than WWL.
but i do really like that "green-man" insight, as well as acknowledging the way lion sticks out. however, for me, MPP has always been about the 'boom.' that is, my first time hearing it (my first anco exp) my head essplode. though still, very interesting

I think maybe they didn't really like From a Beach, because most of their songs played live are released in some way.
