I just found this video of Too Soon played live... It's got Panda going ham on the drums! Deak and Geo going shirtless crazy! Avey's got a grip on things :D

What do we think everyone? (sorry if this has been posted before)

I do remember this from a while back, and never followed up - I only have short portions of the show, not very much unfortunately, as I remember, but it's somethin. It's on 8mm video and I've been going through my videotapes lately so I can see about digging it up and digitizing it. I'm out of town later this week and back later in October, however, so if you don't mind following up then... I should also ask my friend to see if he had videotaped any of the times they came through as well. And yeah, that one 2002 tour with Noah on full kit was pretty awesome. Ok thanks for gettin in touch!

I love how much of play this performance is. Noah is the Zeus on drums with Brian and Josh kneeled down facing him in almost venerating fashion, like they're worshiping him. And then you have Dave off to the side narrating the what's going down. SO GOOD

watching old shows on youtube like this to me captures what's frightening about experimental music. Of course the guys on stage know what's going on and are playing the song, but the audience must be in the deep end assuming they've never heard it before. Utter chaos. Even HCTI takes a couple of listens to decipher, but when it's happening right in front of you it must be very confronting and disorienting

Yeah, I asked him about this in 2010 I think. Got a similar response. Maybe someday.

absolutely amazing shows. the insane core of animal collective's early music. pretty sure there were only like 6 HCTI era shows, which is why footage is so rare... there is that tonic recording, but that's only audio. what i would do to see them live in 2000-2002....

It's really a shame that we don't have better boots of this era. HCTI is arguably the most live-instrumentation-focused album, and probably would have lent itself really well to live performances, as we can see from these snippets. The Tonic boot is pretty good, but still... I can't even imagine how incredible a high def recording or video would be.
