this album is better than the boots, everything is perfectly in a chaotic, lucid, and cerebral place. such a knocker..feel like im getting to the nucleus of something each listen.
also lyrically im really into all of these...streamline

i can't wait to hear the remastered/soundboard rehearsal that will eventually be released. since i avoided the boots, the album versions are what is 'correct' to my ear, so i wonder if the details that people were sad to see go, will not feel right to me after being so familiar with the album.
just a case of what is familiar being what is 'right', not one being better than the other.

A poster on atease got to interview Noah and had this to say of it:
wrote:
Hey thanks for that. I just wrapped it and he described the sequencing as serving a narrative about purging and recreating an identity. Up to the end of Come To Your Senses is about the "hectic death throes" of the dying identity, Tropic of Cancer thru Lonely Wanderer is "a limbo" and the final songs are the triumphant joy of "the new thing being created".
The narrative was the main thing that determine what got cut and what didn't. There were about 19 finished tracks and the ones that were cut may surface but "no promises".
He thinks that using Debussey in Lonely Wanderer is cheesy and that originally, he thought Acid Wash was "crappy"! Hah.
2015 will see a small amount of touring but he's "shifting creatively to Animal Collective now".

if the soundboard rehearsal is from the ATP era, it'll sound really really different to you lol. all the songs were raw and grinding and weird

this is so interesting.. I think his sounds are spot on with the concept he went for. before I read any explanations or analyses of the album I was already feeling that it had something to do with getting past something - rethinking oneself, shedding the old skin, coming out clean and new and stronger. I didn't particularly know why.. I figured I was just attributing my own life to the album. guess not! it's especially cool to me that I felt so drawn to ToC and LW initially, because I think that's where I'm headed mentally. what a mind-blowing album. it couldn't have come at a better time.
SG has that nod to the fact that recovering from anything isn't easy ("you'll trip up again") but it gives me chills at the same time after "go get up again." it's so hopeful and surefooted. only you can fill those spaces!!

Can we talk about the part of the ATP Jabberwocky when the drums come back in and someone in the crowd goes "OOOWWWWWW!!!~" because of how awesome it is?

I've been revisiting them, amazed at their evolution. Especially Crosswords, when you listen to the original ATP version it's so primitive compared to what we got. That vibrating piano thing puts the song on a whole different level.

Larry Fitzmaurice (news editor at the Fader and former Pitchfork staffer) tweeted this today: "If the Panda Bear album came out in 2014 it'd be the best record of 2014". A few other writers replied in agreement too
I know critical opinion is pretty much the last thing that matters, but it is nice to see the album getting some praise already

Pitchfork is traditionally very hard on artists as they hit their late 30's and above, so that's great! Especially since they aren't even listening to the best quality version of it yet.
It shouldn't matter to AnCo fans what P4k or anyone else thinks obviously, but the more good press Panda gets, the more people hear his music and hopefully are sucked into the AnCo universe, which is good for everybody.

^Agreed, although actually they have heard the high quality version. Since they're press, they definitely received promotional copies of the album

whoops, could have sworn i had read this whole page.
That narrative he describes is what I think everybody thought he meant... so he nailed that
wow so there were songs that were good enough in his mind but didn't fit the story!! and he still might not give them to us. That's incredible artistic integrity to cut songs like jabberwocky (and faces in the crowd, but we have it anyway) even when they are some of the best songs you have made.
would you rather have those songs on the album so that'd they'd get more attention, or would you rather keep the ideal narrative in tact?
Also that confirms to me that this is definitely a concept album that goes beyond just theme but actually tells a story... awesome.
and finally thank god anco is gonna get back together as a group soon to do a new one

Listened to Tomboy for the first time in maybe a year or so. I was always a big defender of that record but hearing it now having Meets the Grim Reaper to compare it to gives me a completely different perspective. Tomboy happened at a time in my life filled with stress and frustration so the mood matched my own personal feelings. Meets the Grim Reaper trumps Tomboy in every way. Production is top notch. Songwriting connects. The vibe. It's up there with the best of AC's entire output. Sonic and Noah should be so proud.

i have to say that listening to GR with this knowledge gave a different feel to the songs. not better or worse, just more empathy. and makes the sharp left turn of lonely wanderer > principe real make more sense.

I couldn't agree more. I was going to make a post like this but didn't want to sound like I'm hating on Tomboy. I'm not. It's just that GR is SO great all around that it seems to really outshine Tomboy (for me personally) by a lot. And Tomboy is a good album. So I mean no disrespect to Pete or Noah by saying that Grim Reaper is far superior. But the thing is, after listening to it probably 25 times already, it just keeps getting better with each listen. It's already becoming one of my favorite albums I've ever listened to, and that's a tough place to get to for me.

Yeah, hearing the evolution is amazing. The only boots ive been listening to since the albums release is the ATP one, because they're almost like different songs. Although I've mostly only listened to it since the album came out to get my OG faces / jabberwocky fix

I fall more in love with Boys Latin every time I hear it
It's such a simple little song but I can't get enough of it

Sonic Boom, may I ask you a question on production?
In many songs of Noah lyrics are the same in different verses. It's interesting - do you copy and paste these same lines after they've been sung once or does Noah sing them every time once again?

Spotify now has Boys Latin and it sounds very much different from the freebirded, which was now clearly brickwalled to shit.

hm, "brickwalled to shit" seems a little harsh to me. Almost as if to say PK & PB put extra compression on the version that freebirded (which is ridiculous).
I can definitely hear the difference between the freebirded version of Boys Latin and the official release, but I wouldn't say it's night and day
