reminds me of the lyrics to that old Grateful Dead song 'Cassidy':
'Faring thee well now.
Let your life proceed by its own design.
Nothing to tell now.
Let the words be yours, I'm done with mine.'

I think the original point I was trying to make but couldn't quite get across was that I don't think Panda bear sat down and said, "Right, Im going to write these two songs and they're going to be vague pops at my critics".
And I agree with what was said above about Carrots being more-so aimed at close-minded people rather than overt critics. Much like how I like to think of Taste as their song about 'listening to Animal Collective'.

These guys don't give a fuck about critics.
have you heard carrots?
Are there any AnCo songs aimed at critics? None immediately come to mind.
Not the song but the lyrics to the beginning of Graze? (Noah's part). I don't remember them off hand but its something about a band and their head getting too big.

^ya i think all of fbk to some extent is about being in AC and touring and making music and stuff, cept mabe wwiws.
cool interpretations.... i don't really see ac writing lyrics aimed solely at critics. seems pretty shallow as far as their lyrics go, from my perspective.
i kind of have heard ctys as being about addiction, of any sort, or like habits more genereally, but thats sort of a darker interpretation than i might be comfortable. "with a treat... you'll make more... never make that one again". but ya im not totally cool with that interp, but i could see where one could see it that way for sure

CTYS is totally aimed at critics or the audience in general who are always looking for artists to repeat their success vs evolving. I feel like it's Noah having an inner dialogue: "are you mad Noah?" "Yea I'm mad! I've made MPP, Tomboy, CHz, etc. and still they want Person Pitch. But you won't make that one again! It's inside the one and all (my discog homie)"
But what is Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker about because I feel like it's about AC and that makes me a sad panda.

This album is so Enya. I got my first piece of music writing in Pfork! It's about her, but I talk about her influence on our boy:

i really don't know what "really shouldn't bring that other guy" could mean but maybe, going with other lyrics, he's just talking about what gear he chooses to use. i know he's referred to his gears as 'guys' before lol. its like him deciding not to use an old sampler or something, idk...

judging by archie's synopsis about PBVSGR being about dealing w/ grief, i thought that bbcm (specifically "you really shouldn't bring that other guy") was about being a sap on others, bringin the vibes down

it really depends how you interpret the word "one". is it "one" as an expression of unity, or does it refer to just something specific?
for the sake of argument/hypothetical, im not going to limit it to the scope of Panda Bear and his artistic work, it could literally be anything he is talking about ( he is a parent; afterall....so you have to think of the first time for just about anything that could be discovered as a child).
it does seem like a call/response, and the message is that its not just the creator who creates the reaction, the audience/host also has a role to play in how some external creation is internalized. it takes two to tango, and its impossible to recreate a feeling. any feeling. go out and find your own magic and realize it is everywhere instead of being spoonfed what has already happened.
which is not that different from what you said tbh.
i don't even know how to think about the BBCM, because i forget what that song sounds like. lol. i can read the words, but its very vague. could it refer to AC? it could. it could also refer to just about anything. a reflection on the possible past? redefining who you are and leaving your stepping stones behind?

I took "other guy" literally in BBCM. Like it could be referencing a friend's marriage. Along with Untying the Knot.
But who knows.

I just want to say Thanks to Peter Kember & Noah Lennox for letting me (us) be part of this huge project that is 'Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper'
How is that we are part of this??? Well, all the posts, the pics, the mixtapes by Peter have make me feel like I was there in the project watching/listening how the magic happens.
I've listened to the album and I can't complain about anything at all, the album is perfect and each song flows very well, I've made a big effort to find a mistake on the production, sequencing of the songs, the mix, etc... but I couldn't find it, I got to admit that at first listen was kind of hard to think that I was going to listen an album and not a soundboard recording, hahaha... but with the 2nd listen it was way easier to understand that this is a proper album not a bootleg and I'm very pleased with the final product.
So thanks again, Noah & Pete
PS
Knowing more about where things occurred during the making process of 'Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper' it's really cool, places like Spain, England and Portugal, I really get those vibes, 'cause some parts of Spain and Portugal are very bright and sunny, the city where I live is kinda the same, shares the same sunny weather, it's December 5th and we have 77ºF/25º and it's 7 PM the sun is even gone but it's still warm, so I can feel and relate to that environment on some of this new songs, I don't know why, but 'Come to Your Senses' gives me those kind of vibes in a stronger way, by the way that song is still my favorite, it was love at first listen.
Have I said Thank You, Pete & Noah? Yeah? Well, saying it one more time seems very appropriate 'cause you're giving me (us) hours of enjoyment.
THANKS, Noah Lennox & Peter Kember, you guys really rock

any ideas on these lines? Obviously would have to be a shot in the dark, think we need some inside help on Selfish Gene, we can get something from the song title. Like the chord changes in this song a lot.

I always thought Selfish Gene was sort of a love song to Avey. Maybe it's just a snippet that always stuck with me but it always pops in my head, from an interview I read (on here, probably), where he more-or-less says that the early AC material was basically just noise and that they had sort of moved on from that stuff in a more focused direction. I can imagine the pressure of being such a successful and honestly awesome group of musicians would push you to keep refining your sound and pushing what you think about your own music.
"When at times it seems like fates have set it up like so much magic/just a ruse to get you with it"
sort of like it was set up to seem like what they were doing was magical just to get them in the game
"Seems like a spell and all they talk as if its come to fill those spaces/only you..."
I think maybe this is a reference to Avey's melodic style, which tends to be very busy and fill a lot of space. Or maybe just their style in general which tends to fill a lot of space.
"So when the party goes.."
part could be what I mentioned earlier about the pressure, and how maybe Mr. N is understanding how its hard to be surrounded by people who weren't apart of their original vision for their earlier music. It might seem like with a changing view as you get older, you look back and maybe look down on your previous endeavors.
I dunno, this is just something that has crossed my mind, based almost solely on the "it might seem we're making songs, but we're really making noise part" which is basically the only lyrics that seemed to carry over from what we thought of the original ATP boots. Hell, maybe I'm thinking of a different band who said that because I can't seem to find the Avey interview I referenced. This song just feels sort of like a love song to me and has that sweet-ness quality to it. Also the "you'll trip up again" could be a hope that he forgets about the pressure and falls back into an earlier state of mind.
Anyway, I think it's harsh but at the same time kind of sweet to think of it this way. This is a pretty far out assumption, I think, and I don't want to project this on to the song or anything. I love Avey tare's music and everything he does ("That, it wont grow" is probably my favorite song this year), and I don't think there is anything wrong with the direction these guys are going in. I like Ac because I identify with their approach to music, which tends to shine through regardless of what genre or style they've adopted for the most current release.
At one point I definitely thought it was about weed, how its sort-of looked down on in society, and how you might be tempted to distance yourself from it because it's sort of stigmatized with "stoner culture" and all that. I think that that interpretation fits pretty well also.

Interesting article, Jerry! Yes, Ebudae really sounds very Panda, or Panda sounds like her. I always liked Orinoco Flow, now I know she has some more good songs

i think someone on here said it was something to do with noah's dad. he died of cancer and i think the wig was referencing his hair loss?
the title selfish gene is a reference to the book about evolution. so i suppose the song is essentially about panda moving on and getting over his dad's death?
so with the making noise and making songs thing i was thinking it was maybe an exchange between him and his dad? how panda's trying to convince that him and AC are making songs rather than noise.
are all these speculations creepy for noah you reckon?

its a song about SUDDEN REVELATION n REALISATION
WITH A WIG ON THAT AINT IT he realises u cant fake it, HOW A PROPER CHEST IS CLEAN how a proper person has a clean chest, no lies no nothin
this song is abt total truth, and realisation that what he went thru was the lowest point in his life (definition of nadir:the lowest or most unsuccessful point in a situation)
he realises also he needs these people he rejected previously (BBCM, CTYS??) only you can fill those spaces!
the party will break a brittle back, he realises u need to be strong for the onslaught of ppl and experiences in ur life
and he realises YES
he will trip up again! he will slip back into this state of mind of muddiness and grief and not seeing things clearly
thats what makes this song so fkn magical is that its abt something so universal and transcendental yet personal and emotional, nadir also means the point on the celestial sphere directly below an observer in astronomy... making the observer ABOVE said point?? he is ABOVE his situation and ABOVE his grief?????
and to tie this all into the album, he's also PAST
graph that spasm pbear

Went out in nature, dropped acid, listened to this album
Crosswords is now my song for when the ground is wobbly
Somehow I had a moment with Principe Real. So much going on in the background. I could feel the warmth of the Portuguese sun
And Selfish Gene became my reality
Sorry if this is too much information or is uncouth to talk about...
