Anybody know if the opening of Tropic of Cancer with the brass is a sample? if so, what's it from?

I think it may from a bjork song, but I can't think of the name of it off hand. I could alkso be wrong.. Will sift through her discography later.

edit: Never mind. i was thinking it was from a Volta track, It's not. It's in the same key and recorded similarly, but it's not the source.

I was trying to think of the 'toy' name for that windpipe, because I remembered that it was a strange one... & when I found it ('corrugaphone', like corrugated cardboard, I guess) I ended up watching a kid science video where a guy bought a giant vacuum tube and drove around in his car with it sticking out the window.
But seriously, what a great comparison.

hey Natttttttt !
hows it going ? hope its goo times !
thats cool !
Its funny , i used to do that on the drives to the studio in the early '90's.
differant speeds , differant tones .....

I used one of those tubes for a solo on 'soul kiss' lp .
and sampled it for the organ sound on another track or 2 .

I always thought if I ever get me sum slick rails , even a beater - I would fix differant lengths of the pipes to the hood/bonnet & get differant chords at differant speeds ......with sweet beat freqs....

woo hoo . more goo for you soo (n) petekx

it almost sounds like there's a hint of sleigh bells in there too. it's such a gorgeous little piece. there are so many tiny little pockets of detail all over the place. i can not wait to hear it on vinyl on proper speakers.

his voice has never sounded better either imo.

i'd love to see what SB could/would do for a AC album.

love the bassy synths that hold down tracks like boys latin and senses. this album really is 'perfect' but even that seems reductive, cuz when i put it on, it just starts playing and its like turning on this really good headspace

seriously seeming like one of the most playable albums. sequencing is amazing but then the tracks themselves are all really strong... also, can you split this album into 'bangers' vs 'ballads'?

bangers=mr noah, crosswords, bbcm, boys latin, ctys, principe
ballads=sequential circuits, tropic of cancer, lonely wanderer, selfish gene

and then acid wash is kind of a mix. love crosswords-bbcm-latin sequence....

so incredibly stoked for iced out popadam/jabbawaquy/cosplay

Selfish Gene is unbelievable. I've never heard anything like it. We've all lived with that melody for the last year and a half, but the way the song progresses with the percussion , like something coming alive, I think really makes the song. The melody kind of feels like it's going in a circle, and with each cycle it picks up these little percussive bits that somehow harmonize with the synth, and before you know it, it's this powerful tornado, then the "you'll trip up again" climax once everything's come together...

this song, with that classic melody, was an instant favorite and with each listen I picked up something new that made it even better. i can't wait for the other tracks to unravel like this one has.

^ya I agree. it's a really special song to me, and was live too. there's something really great about the way the song is structured...the harmonies at the end are incredible. love the percussion as well, and I still think that's a sample of link pushing a block from a 2d Zelda game in there

favorite imagery, and melodies pandas done mayb

Sonic Boom! Mr Kember it has been a pleasure listening to everything you've put out since Spacemen 3 - I still remember listening to Playing with Fire as a teenager and having it blow my mind. It was a sonic revelation for me that opened me into an entirely different sphere of experiencing music.

As artists age, it is hard for them to stay relevant musically - only a select few people have managed to make consistently excellent music throughout the course of their life - the psychologial and biological changes that happen as you age can be attributed to becoming formulaic and boring. After listening to PBMTGR, I'm extremely happy both of you have managed to continue to make music that challenges me and pushes my musical boundaries. Do you have any insight as to what keeps you creative as you age? Is it drug use, or keeping a creative social circle, or something else entirely? Thanks Pete!

I love how Selfish Gene starts suddenly like you're already in the middle of the song. Those synth stabs in the beginning, starting on the ii (Dm) chord (for those music theory nuts). And the first line - "Just now I see it so clear..." The song is the moment of realization on the album, the emotional climax if you will.

Yeah, totally great point and one thing I love about the song, you're immediately swept up in it because it seems in medias res. Hey, shit, I promised I'd get my kids to translate those lyrics into Latin. The little bastards were playing up so I ended up giving them an unseen translation. I'll get it done as a Chrimbo treat.

you guys, what's your opinion on what "come to your senses" is about?
based on what i could make out on the bootlegs i always thought it was noah talking to one of his kids. like the kid did a bad thing and asks him "are you mad?". and he responds "yeah i'm mad... don't make that again!" and so on. but now that we've got the lyrics ("it's inside the one and all" etc.) i'm a little puzzled. so what do you think?

idk what the line "youre inside the one and all " could even mean, but otherwise the song seems to be a sassy ode to critics who say that he'll never make another person pitch. "You made a bunch you bet... go on make more.... but you wont make that one again"

the song seems like he's laughing in critics faces by saying that wasnt the last time, i'm perfectly capable of making more amazing music

really? i think it mentions drugs but to me it always was more about those stretches of time where doing much of anything is a chore, and you end up just feeling like a plug sat around all day. it feels like "trip a lot" is just a byproduct of that much larger feeling, that when you're in that loafing oafish state, you end up partaking just to get thru the sluggish boredom.

i'd bet anything that almost all the songs are coming from a family place. Ive thought a lot about noah's approach to writing because i really like it. as a father, your children are on your mind 24/7 and there's no way to avoid pouring that emotion into your art. the good and the bad of family. and he seems like a very family oriented person.

the other thing i think about is how he always has such amazingly strong melodies. i wonder if he sometimes just hums syllables to get the write pattern down and then fits words into it. to me, it would explain how perfect a lot of them are and i think it's a cool approach. not sure if accurate though.

I don't see how it couldn't come from a family place, Panda's always placed a strong emphasis on family (Young Prayer) and his role as father seems to be a big part of his identity. Most of his lyrical input on Merriweather Post Pavilion deals with family (My Girls, Daily Routine, Brother Sport), as well, and his music has a certain familial warmth to it. So I agree :)

Just had a look. Fair enough, I'd never really looked into Carrot's lyrics. Such a joyous song and yet the narrative is so biting from Noah.

Are there any AnCo songs aimed at critics? None immediately come to mind.

'carrots' almost seems like its more aimed at hipster insider elitists who sneer at the unwashed masses for not knowing good tunes than it is critics. a message to just enjoy the music for what it is, and not make it a statement about who you are?

its not a ticket
for you to pick at
other people
who dont know whats up
like youre so sure you do

its so lame that
you could take my feelings
and make yourself feel
like youre better than
anyone else who hasnt heard

whats the point in pouring it all out
when you guys just wear it on your coat?

get your head out from those mags
and websites who try to
shape your style
take a risk just for yourself

Yeah, bobross I'd agree there. I think music critics could be included in that group...I also think that the song could be applied to life in general, rather than just music taste.

I also think it's possible that we're totally wrong and it's not about any of these things. Idk

that was the first time I actually read them.

i am bad @ panda bear.

im not saying its definitely about this or not about that....but the context of rejecting some sort of 'cult hero champion' was the thing that jumped out of the page at me when i went looking for a 'fook you m8' message to the critics who don't like stuff. Of which critics definitely play a role in the trendsetting/'hipper than thou' groupthink/hype machine as you mentioned.

oh those dastardly critics. Skewering with irony, self indulgent references, and name dropping; the work of artists everywhere. go back to your ivory tower!

*shakes fist*

The music is ambiguous. There is no one thing that the song is about, it is up to your own interpretation to what it means to you...Because I think PB would be way more stoked off people ADDING to his song rather than just trying to figure out wtf he's getting at.

Besides a few AC songs, I think most of them don't really have a defined subject or thing they are about...They are just pieces of artwork and we associate to each one the best we can. Part of what makes these guys so fucking fun.

^I'd definitely agree with you. It's all open to interpretation, and it makes me think of how PB says he likes that it's ambiguous in You Can Count On Me whether he's saying "Know you can count on me" or "No you can't count on me." I think that's awesome that he lives it up to interpretation, and that every fan could have a different impression or meaning. It's extremely humble of AC and PB too, I wish more artists would see that music is what the listener makes of it, not some one certain, set-in-stone thing.

I think my last post may have come off as snobbish, sort of like I was trying to say that none of us were ever meant to understand this music. Totally not what I meant at all, so I apologize that I wasn't clear.
