this is why i don't do boots anymore. the album is inevitably gonna be a different creature because u have to make certain decisions in a studio, and it's always really hard to separate the versions in your head and let go. best of luck to you tho. this albums amazing, from someone who skipped the boots

@stonewall^ does it help at all to know that this is definitely the exact way that pb (and sonic) wanted it to be tho?
i could see where taking the drops out in crossword and ctys and having a constant beat instead could be jarring, but i think it works better for the purposes of the albums momentum. sometimes overly dynamic songs suffer for me in terms of listenability, so i like that theyre a little more steady. a bit like mpp kinda
I disagree that they are at all like MPP.
This sounds like a joke. It sounds like Panda Bear doing karaoke on an old tour bus microphone over some songs somebody produced overnight. If I was going to rate they album based on the live performance I saw, it would be a 9/10, but this album is a caricature of that experience, a mockery.
I don't want to put you down if you like this album. Wish I felt the same way really.
i can understand the complaint about the lost beat drop in crosswords / come to your senses, but i'm comparing the album versions of tropic of cancer, selfish gene and boys latin to live versions and i don't really see where you're coming from with those three.
man i'm sure the patch on Selfish Gene was always like this only our hearing was obscured by concert recordings and venues with mountains of natural reverb

Perhaps for Tropic of Cancer 'poor' is hyperbole, but I could have skipped the boots but I would not have given up my chance to see him live just so that I could enjoy this moderately good album.
It actually seems like you really really want to put the album down. I dunno maybe let it digest a little, you are clearly grappling with a reconciliation between two different experiences. One of them you've had more than a few hours to sit with, maybe let this fight play out a little bit longer, sleep on it and stuff. Maybe you end up not liking it, whatever, but it seems way to early to be throwin around "furthermore"s. Nobody has heard this album enough for that.
Noah is #1
every listen is good, but its all getting better.
just takes 2 listens to remove some of the bias from the boots
just fucking enjoying how amazing it is now
thanks everyone who uploaded boots/info/covers/and thoughts
big thanks to Pete. you're the best. you have changed my life. haha. really tho
yeah stonewall, im on your page with some of the concerns but time is a great way to come to understand their intentions and you're throwing massive amounts of fire on a knee jerk inclination.

I agree with you this may be premature. But I've never had such a negative experience from an AnCo related project. I don't want to put it down, I really want to enjoy it. But it's just not good.
And to others who think I'm comparing to boots, I'm not, I'm comparing to actually experiencing the live show (thought I have heard some boots). If you didn't see the live show the boots might sound dismal.
I think the best comparison though is to listen to the Boys Latin preview from that teaser video and the actual Boys Latin vocals in this freebird. If you don't hear how silly Panda sounds in the freebird as compared to in the preview I don't know what to tell you
Edit: And with that I will give it another listen and sleep on it. Didn't mean to rain on anybody's parade, but I had to get that off my chest.
I can't believe that just happened the night of the freebird lol that's some pretty harsh criticism after one listen(?)
there are some details that I miss from the bootlegs, but who am I to question the judgement of the genius(es if you count pk (not saying that he isn't a genius in his own right, I just don't know what his level of input was during the writing of these songs(lol(parenthception)))) that brought us all of these tracks in the first place.
the album is the materialization of his artistic vision, maaaaaan
edit: uh wow less stoned but still felt the need to add another parenthetical layer for clarity

Because we don't need an entire other thread devoted to you being self-righteous. If you don't want to download it that's fine, people talking about tracks on here does not mean you have to listen to them. Someone talking about a studio version is no different than someone talking about a live bootleg. I don't feel like we need to segregate this thread though into the listeners vs the abstainers, that's counter-productive and to be completely honest, I don't feel like seeing fifty thousand PBVSGR threads in this subforum.
Actually it'd amount to two threads for the album. Also the difference is live bootlegs are generally authorized. Sonic Boom has been gracious enough to answer our questions and talk about the album. How is it self-righteous when it's in the interest of respecting someone's work who posts on here?
Jesus real christ
EDIT: Sonic ended up being way cooler about this than I was

-Harmonies/overall vocal performance in Crosswords
-All of Butcher Baker. Was never super into that one from the boots but wow I like what this song turned into.
-Harmonies in the dark cloud section of Boys Latin
-The way Panda sings "with a TREAT-UH" in CTYS oh man.
-All the echoey background sounds floating through the stereo field in CTYS. so thick.
-I got chills as soon as I heard the harp in Tropic of Cancer
-Everything about Lonely Wanderer holy jesus how does this song even exist
-The way the little percussive sounds in Selfish Gene gradually developed throughout the song. I feel like they really nailed that track.
Still not sure how I feel about certain parts though. Acid Wash was just kinda overwhelming. Feels like a grower.

I agree, but esp. about butcher. The studio verson is good
I gotta say, petek was not lying about the 400%
my first listen was pure joy and happiness and love
might be premature to say, but this is in my top 5 of all time rn
I'm gutted for Pete and Noah, I really am. Even though the vast majority on here will have pre-ordered, this kind of freebird is inevitably pretty damaging to sales.
On the plus side, this deserves to sell like fucking Thriller. I can see this crossing over like nothing before or since MPP. It's actually even more accessible than that, too. Just a series of absolute bangers, superficially simple productions but within ten seconds of virtually every song, you're right in the thick of it, absolutely brilliant melodies, the best collection of songs since Merriweather.
Yeah, there's some touches of rawness I'd got used to from the boots but there are so many little flourishes and whatnot in the studio recording that I know I'll also grow to love like crazy. Interesting also that my moan about Ms. Pacman feeling a bit cramped is not followed through on here. More bass, more space. Just wondering now where I'll squeeze it into the tracklist!
Pete, I wish it hadn't freebirded but since it has, I'd just like to say thanks for all your contributions on here. It's really made this such an exciting and intimate experience. I wish you both enormous success with this. It deserves all the plaudits that it will surely get.
